I will be thrilled if Appel, Gray or Bryant fall to the Twins. Stewart is my current choice at #4. I will be waiting in the 'I told you so' section if they pick Manaea. It could work and the Twins need pitching but he hasn't done well this spring and there are red flags all over Manaea currently. Shipley is growing on me so I could understand this pick. Meadows doesn't interest me a lot. he's not a standout even in a weak draft class and the Twins have a lot of toolsy OF'ers. Frazier would not be horrible. He is an OF'er but he has legit power which is a weakness of the farm system. The Twins better be projecting more power from Moran and he better stay at 3B if picked. not a fan of this pick. HS catchers.
I read somewhere that Morneau hired a prominent motivational speaker this offseason to work on his clutchiness. That accounts for the improvement from .625 OPS last season to .764 this season. Word is that Mauer has started working with him to become more clutch since he only has 13 RBI's this year.
People just need to remember that if you never played baseball you clearly don't know anything about baseball. It's also impossible for someone to have both studied baseball and played baseball. These are mutually exclusive skillsets. Once you start living in your parent's basement studying basic statistics you have completely forgotten what it is like to play the game. Long live clutchiness.
ESPN has the Twins with 30 HR's and opponents with 35 HR's. It kind of sucks to hit at 30F so that is probably one factor. Willingham will start mashing and Plouffe could go on a (shorter) hot streak and the numbers could change a lot quickly. Yet the Twins won't hit a lot of HR's if Morneau stays in the teens and Arcia doesn't get FT AB's.
a) He's currently significantly better than any other reasonable option the Twins have at 1B other than moving Mauer there. So he does make the Twins better even if he's not great. Fans do not perceive Morneau as a poor player. Most probably still perceive him as an above average player even if he isn't. Trading Morneau for a marginal prospect and replacing him with someone cheaper that completely flops (potentially Parmelee) is another 'the Twins are cheap and liars with a publicly funded stadium' round of bad press that get lobbed the Twins direction. Making unpopular moves is part of running a team but there is a line that some teams shouldn't (not the Marlins) cross. In liriano's case he really sucked while he was here and he sucked after he was traded. Optimistically the Twins could obtain a good prospect or two for Willy and his replacement (Arcia) is really good.
Before alarm bells start going off about pitch count it should be noted that college pitchers get 6 days of rest and it's pretty common that they have higher pitch counts than MLB pitchers with 4-5 days of rest. He did probably throw too many pitches though. Perhaps he drops to the Twins due to an additional concern like this. At one time some on here were trying to make an argument for Anderson @ #4 mostly because he was one of the better college pitchers.
Hicks has done enough recently to stay up with the big league team. He's also the only real CF option so we would be stuck with him regardless. I'm giving Parmelee another month because I don't want his future to be undecided next offseason. Either he's a starter or he is battling for a roster spot next season. I would like it if we could get rid of this 2 futility infielder roster that the Twins currently employ. Of course it doesn't make much sense to call Colabello up (what I want) if Doumit, Parmelee, Morneau and Arcia are sharing 3 spots as it is.
At this point in his development I would put him between Hendriks and DeVries as far as ability. Hendriks was pretty awesome statistically at a similar level but he was lacking the mythical 'stuff'. Currently that is the knock on Baxendale but a) he could have more stuff than people think he could succeed similar to Diamond (doesn't have great 'stuff' either). It will be interesting to see what happens as he moves up. It's always nice to have solid arms in the system.
Good to see you again. I'm becoming less impressed with Polanco's athleticism. He sounds more like a guy that will be okay at 2B defensively rather than a SS option. The 3B's and SB's is an odd stat to have though. I'm guessing he isn't getting the green light much and I think the midwest league has some fairly large OF's.
The difference is that Morneau is loved by fans, players and the FO. This team has made some good baseball moves that have been unpopular with the general public and they have made some questionable decisions that have been unpopular with the general public. There's no reason to trade one of the most popular Twins for scrubs. Especially if Willingham is traded around the same time for a good prospect or two.
Colabello - 2 doubles and a BB - He might be 29 but at some point I hope he gets some MLB AB's. It's still a bit of a longshot but perhaps he's the placeholder 1Bman for a couple of years instead of Parmelee. I remain optimistic about Parmelee though. Pinto - 3/4 and a BB - it's more and more likely that butera's time in MN is over Meyer was solid - 5.1IP 4K 0BB 2ER - 76 pitches and 55 strikes Sano homer again - yawn... Vargas stays hot with a HR Baxendale with another nice game 5IP, 3K, 2BB, 0ER Polanco keeps rolling with 3/5 2 doubles and a BB
The current version of Morneau is unlikely to bring back a top 100 prospect even if the Twins picked up the entire contract in July. If the Twins can get a top 100 prospect then I'm in favor of trading him. If the Twins are picking up Pedro Hernandez and Eduardo Escobar clones (regardless of his hot start) then just keep him.
That's not at all what you have said in this thread nor what I have disagreed with. You have directly said that his power tool is comparable to Justin Upton's. that is false.
May with a rough start again. Tonkin back on track after a couple of rough outings at the beginning of the season. Last 10 gms, 10 IP, 11K, 4BB, 0.00ERA Colabello with #11. Feel good story of the year.
you still aren't getting it. Puckett might have hit 30+ HR once in his career but that doesn't mean that his power tool compares to a player that I consider to be top ten in the MLB in raw power. JUp is a beast. Sano's raw power compares to Upton's and potentially is even better. Buxton's raw power does not and potentially does not.
The one thing about having early picks is that the Twins can go overslot by more than other teams below them and not lose a draft pick. They can spend an additional 5% (700+K) on the draft and only pay an additional 75% tax on the overage. I consider this unlikely but it does give them options if Boldt or someone drops to the 2nd rd. That means they could offer mid/late 1st rd money to someone if they fell. Note - If I'm not mistaken a few agents exploited this last year and a couple of top ten overall draftees signed contracts taking advantage of this extra money.
Absolutely nobody has said that buxton won't be a power threat. The problem I have in this thread is that people are now talking about Buxton as a 30 or even 40 HR hitter. This would put him well beyond Harper's status as a prospect. I did see Justin Upton as a 20 yr old. he had massive power then and it has increased since then.
Yes, they need more prospects. They definitely need more SP'ing and MI prospects. The key to putting a long run together is a loaded farm system and relievers are the most unpredictable and overvalued commodity in baseball. there is no reason to hold a fire sale though.
Poor attempt at sarcasm. My complaint in this thread is that people (including national writers) are trying to compare Buxton's potential power to JUp's. It is clearly imo a step (or two) below that. It doesn't matter if Buxton puts on another 20 lbs. JUp is still more athletic than MCab but that's the body type that he's developing. He's becoming massive and he hits massive HR's. Sano has JUp power and possibly more but Buxton does not. This is not a slam on Buxton. He's probably a top 5 prospect at this point and has a chance at being a perennial AS and MVP candidate. This is a reality check though.
At this point I'm not certain anyone has ever seen Justin Upton before. I'm not knocking buxton's power at all. it's a bit of an unknown but if Buxton fills out like JUp then he's not a CF'er.
