Barring serious injury there is almost no chance he doesn't hit the market again. He might even still be around 30m, just 7 years of it or so. Not a lot of risk for the Twins, I would assume his cost is quite a bit lower than if he was fully signed for next year. I don't think you can give much more than rental prices for him because of the downside of 30m for watching him rehab. No QO available either. It fits in a lot of ways but someone has to be comfortable with taking a 30m bath. That doesn't fit at all.

The mythical cheap ace with team control that is the apple of the Twins Daily eye. Available for any combination of three prospects ranked 24-37 (team rank). I thought about other names but while Bob Ryan had a nice career, his fastball is clearly gone.

Agreed, but it doesn't change the strategy, only the amount available to spend. I have no reason to believe they sat on a significant amount of money in the offseason that was any amount higher than typical reserves for these type of things. We also aren't sure they are even getting all the TV money they thought they would get. It could be very bleak in Kip Elliotts office right now. They still have the prospect account to spend from though.

I think they would let Ryan and Ober go longer if they are on their game. I'm fine with that too. I still see the plan for the bullpen to be a postseason weapon coming together as a substitute for a big starter. If any of the top three struggles it will be a long day anyway so a pen that can handle 6 innings is pretty critical to give the offense a chance. I could see a game with two from Paddack and SWR and two from Festa/Varland or something like that again. You can't ride the bullpen for the whole postseason but 6-7 solid arms make all the options available.

That is not in evidence. Not spending in the offseason makes spending at the deadline more likely, not less. Maybe counterintuitive but why would a business spend extra money months before it was needed? The picture of what they have and want and need is much clearer now, making the spend more exact. It might cost more in prospects, but that account is in good shape. Dollar cost is less for less time. It's the smart "right sizing" move. We don't have to like it. One big move might erase all the offseason angst as well. Marketing department be danged.

But that's why the bar is much higher for an additional starter. If Paddack is healthy he likely gets a start. SWR can also start a postseason game. Nothing short of the acquisition of Nolan Gibson or Max Scherzer is going to change what they ask for from a postseason starter outside Pablo. From the law firm of Ryan, Ober, Paddack and SWR they are doing 4-5 innings at most and then heavy bullpen. Almost anyone they aquire will have the same limitations. This is a classic what we might do vs what is in their range of actually doing. We know to probably a 90th percentile what their range of options are. They aren't scared of making a move, but it's gotta be a very clear slam dunk upgrade.

Are you making the case they need 4 postseason starters? Or the case that internal options for the Dallas Kuechel role are scarce? Neither are the case. The bar to clear for a starter acquisition is very high. Better than Joe Ryan is the minimum level, and that guy better come with some control beyond the fall.

I logged on the say this very thing. It should be good for Twins Daily see this happen to someone else, though we will all forget it the next time Alcala gives up a run. -

I don't disagree, he does have significant credibility for the reasons you mention. He's very balanced on baseball issues. I'm a dedicated listener and patron. Unfortunately, he has an enormous blind spot for payroll, finance, business operations and the like. He's not shy about it, he often brags about how dysfunctional he is. When he discusses these issues, all rationality goes out the windows and he becomes 20 year old AGLipshiz calling in to KFAN. Yet he still acts with the same certainty as topics he understands. It's a problem. He has a platform and sets narrative now. As a business man myself, I completely understand why he would get some dirty looks in the hallway. I don't know how sensitive the Twins are, but if you talk about me like that, presenting facts I know you don't have, we have a problem. Now that we are halfway through the season, the front office is looking better by the day. We don't have to like it, but to rate a front office on moves made to "excite" TD is silly. Moves not made are looking pretty good right now. He should probably acknowledge that.

But what if the upside is becoming a national darling? The reframe is that the local market doesn't matter, so sorry Minnesota dweebs. Apologies, you do matter, you really kinda do, congrats. The real prize is being a nationally recognized consistent winner. All the moneys come then. What if the real goal is something none of you have considered? Downside is basically what we have now. Which is pretty dang good, regardless of Gleeman's price to value calculations. I still wonder if he complains the chef didn't spend enough to make his MSG chicken. Sports are weird.

I'm not sure I get the point of this article. I was quite interested when I saw the headline. Surely Nick had an interesting angle on which mid 20s former prospects were about to be swept away by a new wave of certain to cure our chronic Minnesotis, we got it right this time kids in shining armor. Nope, just another grumble piece to remind fans that aren't gripped in the Minnesota loser vortex to not enjoy, lest something happen. Gleeman as the voice of the fan, yikes. Voice of the Minnesota mentality (solid sports team name) who's motto is nice things not allowed. I'd bet maybe 5% of all fans have a view even remotely close to the Gleeman summation and many of those have it because of him. Any reason why this feels bigger than the stinker teams they fielded after the new stadium opened? They are doing the most important thing correctly, building a consistent winner, the TV deal will vanish into the memories of only a few. If Gleeman lets it.

Minnesota Veterans Making Front Office Look Great
Jocko87 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes, happy to conclude discussions on Mr Anderson. I think my remaining question is related to the names you mentioned, many not even on the 40 man. If your contention is that the Margots, Farmers and Santana's are blocking them I would agree. But they are also blocked by a ton of other, closer, need to prove it players as well. Who is actually blocking the Severino/Kiersey types? I'd say it's much more the Martin, Lee, Julien, Wallner, Larnach, Kiriloff, Miranda types than a Santana. And as I have mentioned as many places as I can. The May roster is not the September roster is not the October roster. Moves are different now than what they would make in win or go home times. Christian Vazquez at third base one time basically ensures that Kyle Farmer will be around a long time, even if it is on the IL.- 121 replies

Minnesota Veterans Making Front Office Look Great

OK I looked. I'd say the more pressing reliever moves of those years would be related to Addison Reed, Fernando Rodney and Ryan Pressly. Belisle linked to Anderson is just two unrelated names we looked up.- 121 replies

Minnesota Veterans Making Front Office Look Great
Jocko87 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I spent quite a lot of time looking up Nick Anderson already. I said he had a decent career. He was nothing special, sorry. I'm not going down that rabbit hole but I bet I could see why a veteran Matt Belisle was a decent choice as well. Are you more upset that he was a good player who was good elsewhere or that the return was shite? Or because he would have fit nicely on the magical 2019 team? My impression is that it's a personal experience thing for you, not a baseball move. It will happen again and again. I'm not making the case anyone has this down but losing out on one good year from a reliever is hardly worth the ink we've already spilt. The only factors behind any trade that we know about are who moved. Nobody gets moved if value isn't perceived. As for player evaluation, they (all FO) are right far more often than not. Also, Matt Barnes had more K/9 that year as well. I stopped looking.- 121 replies

Minnesota Veterans Making Front Office Look Great
Jocko87 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Happy my exaggeration was noticed. The problem is when names like his are passed around as misses and people don't notice the exaggeration. See above 2 K per inning example. Nick Anderson deserves a special place in the hall of Twins Daily misconceptions. But I guess he's available now so a wrong can be righted. He's been through six organizations as a decent relief pitcher, BFD. If that's a miss, I can't help but feel sorry for this site in the future. There will be a lot of talent flowing through this organization that contributes elsewhere. A player that is good after they leave here does not require endless remember when's. Luis Gil, also not a miss.- 121 replies

Minnesota Veterans Making Front Office Look Great
Jocko87 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't disagree but the names listed above are just wish casting for something new. The names these guy would have to jump would have everyone rightfully up in arms. The fascination with the unseen is a core sports fandom trait. The veterans are better at the job in the vast majority of the cases. That's what matters. There will always be individual examples of late bloomers but they are individual examples for a reason. They don't disprove the rule. By the way, Nick Anderson was DFA'D today. So there's that. No idea why he keeps coming up as a Big Papi like miss.- 121 replies

That's not a true statement. They know what they have-it’s literally the whole point of the minor leagues. They have to pass several minimum thresholds to get that chance.- 121 replies
