  1. The Twins need to find that out. And they need Murphy to play most days for a while in a 103(*) loss team to assess. And they need Garver in AAA for the same reason. But for both to happen, Suzuki needs to go. The problem with keeping Suzuki is the opportunity cost. Plus a return, as little as it might be, is better than nothing, which is what the Twins will get after the end of the season when he will be a free agent. Having Suzuki in the second half in a 103 (*) loss team, instead of evaluating potential future catchers makes zero sense... (*) projected based on their current winning percentage
  2. 2. Baker and Garza. But Garza really was a Tampa product since he started only 26 games with the Twins with 0.8 WAR ,4.47 ERA, 1.602 WHIP and constant fighting with Andy about how he should be pitching... And he made the majors the year after he was drafted so really he did not have much time to "develop" in the Twins' system. He so should not count. The Royals drafted and developed Greinke and the Tigers Verlander. I'd take either for both Baker and Garza
  3. I think that this is a good start of defining the problem but got to take it one step beyond: 2016 should teach the Twins' brass that if you are close to competing, like they were in 2015, they should go all in. They assumed that they can half rear end it in 2015 and wait for the Godot prospects to be better in 2016 to really compete. See what the Mets did in 2015. That's what the Twins should have done in 2015. Buxton. The game's "consensus" number 1 prospect. Bet they could have gotten a bit of help for 2015 and more future help for him before he was exposed for the second time... And this is just an example. Catch-22: This system cannot develop prospects, is unwilling to sell high on prospects (and major leaguers) because "they might get better somewhere else", and that is what is ending up happening. Either gut your development system because it sucks and replace it with another, or forget about it and sell high on "prospects" to get major leaguers developed correctly by another system (i.e. the long standing Yankees' paradigm...)
  4. This assumes that the Twins' system can do that. Huge leap of faith. Development just sucks compared to other systems. Here is an example: Jeff Manship. He failed to develop with the Twins. He went to another system and blossomed. If your system of developing prospects sucks, no matter what you throw at it, will not work...
  5. The Capps trade got the Twins in the postseason. The Jepsen trade did not. That's a big difference. Also: Hu was a much lesser prospect in the Twins system (does that say anything about the Twins' system and their ability to develop pitchers? Of course it does) than Ramos, but Ramos was blocked by a guy named Mauer, and if Mauer did not go through concussion issues and had been the Mauer that we all expected to be when that trade was made nobody would be talking about Ramos now... And Capps was a closer while Jepsen was a middle reliever in their respective teams. Bottom line: the Twins need a better way of developing pitchers, so they have several ready to jump in from their pen. I have still not seen a pitcher since Neshek and Crain, come in from the minors and be very successful in the pen, while others (Hendriks, Manship etc) found success after changing organizations, which makes me think that the issue is not the talent, but the way they develop talent. (and one of course can make a similar argument about starters from the MLB level down.) That is the root cause of the problem and not trades for mediocre relievers. The latter is a (bad) symptom...
  6. career WAR is not a good thing to use to compare individual season achievement. Year to date WAR at the AS Game time, is probably the best measure. Pretty sure that using that, there were worse picks than the above
  7. That guy at MLB rumors should really change the title to "best minor league free agent signings", because the way he has it, it refers to international and undrafted free agent minor leaguers who were signed this year as amateurs.
  8. What's positive? Saying that 3 Twins with barely average to below average performances are on top of the dumpster diving pile? The bad news is that the are their closer, set up man and starting left fielder and in those roles they are in the bottom quarter in the majors. Sure. Among dwarfs someone who is 5'2" might be treated as a giant, but among the rest of the population...
  9. I thought that he should be gone in '98 (when he was in the middle of being the henchman in Pohlad's grand plans of grand suckage = lack of interest by fans = no ticket sales = move or contraction = $ in Pohlad's pockets, and in the second of 4 straight 92+ L seasons; does history repeat itself?) rejoiced when he retired in '07 and have been waiting for him to go (one way or another) since '11. No way to sway me, unless the Twins go to the World Series this season, and then, maybe, I might change my mind.
  10. Getting away from Brunansky
  11. May I take the under, based on the Twins' record? Here is the difference in winning percentage of the Twins' teams this decade between first half and second half 2015: -.085 2014: -.086 2013: -.038 2012: -.034 2011: -.160 Average: -.081 So a .283 record the second half would be the norm for the Twins this decade.... No clue why you would think that this team would be the exception...
  12. Is Suzuki (esp with his axe bat hot streak) better than some catchers certain contenders have right now, so there is trade potential? Yes Is Suzuki the long term answer for a contender as a catcher? No Should the Twins keep someone who is not the long term answer in the C position if the want to contend? No Hope that cleared the confusion
  13. I would not, because of who runs it and his MO. Matter of fact, I have Ryan capable of letting him have enough PAs to pick up the option... Should they trade him? (Heck yeah. Yesterday...) That will bring up JR Murphy and push Garver and his .273/.357/.434 AA slash line to AAA and to a September call up, to see whether one of the 2 might be the Twins starter next season or the Twins would need to do something else. But Terry Ryan? No. He'll keep him
  14. re: Duffey a. he still cannot get past the 6th inning b. his "improvement" the last month is due to a .235 BABIP in that time. His K/9 dropped to 6.9, however during that period; both facts are pretty bothersome. c. but the most bothersome facts is that if you asked 20 people in the game, 18 (*) would tell you that they'd rather have May than Duffey (and his one pitch) in the rotation, because Duffey is better suited for the pen and can actually be pretty good there... (*) the other two are either working or rooting for the Twins
  15. Reality: 20 games out of the division lead 24 games under .500 1 game better than the worst team in baseball the worst team in the American League 5 games under their Pythagorean W-L on pace for 103 losses 15th/15 in ERA in the AL 15th in Hits given in the AL The rest are lipstick (on the most hideous pig since the franchise moved to MN, btw) The problem is that the FO might think that they have something in their hands and might refuse to trade the likes of Tonkin, Pressly, Suzuki, Grossman, Santana (take your pick), Nolasco, Dozier, Nunez (and I might even add Vargas with that mess they made with the Park acquisition to the list). The opportunity is to sell high. Would they? Based on past experience I doubt it. The above are not part of the future and they might bring back a couple players who might be...
  16. Hopefully, between now and early November (the deadline to add players to protect them from the 40-man draft,) lots would have been changed for the Twins as far as trades and player personnel goes. Way too early to tell. It's like asking what model 2020 car you'd like to buy.
  17. That sounds like Michael Corleone's famous like on Godfather III (when I thought I was out, they pull me back in) Bet if they sucked the last month, you wouldn't feel that way You got to trade them when they don't suck, or right before they suck again...
  18. April fools' 2017 25-man roster: C: Murphy/Garver 1B/DH: Mauer/Park/Vargas 2B/SS: Beresford/Polanco/Escobar 3B: Sano OF: Palka/Kepler/Rosario/Buxton/Grossman That's 14. SP: Meyer, Berrios, May, Gonsalves, Jose RP: Duffey, Chargois, Burdi, Rogers, Hilderberger, Theophanopoulos That's 11. Barring injuries. Anyone else who has played with the Twins (eg. the Tonkin's, Santana's, Dozier-Plouffe's, Milone, Hughes etc of the world) the past season or two, traded or demoted. Wham! Bam! Thank you ma'am
  19. OK. a. glad to see Nunez get the spot from this team. He deserves it. b. This says more about the Twins than Nunez. Really.
  20. I was just waiting for the kicker, something like: has allowed an unfathomable TWENTY SIX HOME RUNS IN SIXTY INNINGS this season. and his ERA is just a point over Tommy Milone's (True story. Chris Young has a 6.24 ERA vs Milone's 6.23...)
  21. I believe that Terry Ryan should not be making any more decisions regarding who should stay and who should go Dozier's "leadership" is a lot like Tommy Herr's and Garry Gaetti's (after Tommy Herr) "leadership". And that's another good reason for him to go.
  22. hate it when the only guy who can be a true ace in the Twins' organization is dismissed because of misuse and general minor league Twins player development malaise... Alex John Meyer. That's who.
  23. Too early to tell. But Centeno? Really? How about Murphy? And flip Nunez and Polanco, trade Nunez and find a second baseman (Beresford.) Really, this should be the Twins' 2016 lineup
  24. 1. This is a killer shot. Really. 2. Glad you are jumping into the Palka bandwagon The Twins first baseman of the future
  25. In addition to Felix ($260K bonus) and Wander Valdez ($400K bonus) they have signed Dominican SS Stamy Urena ($130K bonus). Everyone is a SS in the Dominican, but I expect both Felix and Valdez to play at corner positions when they reach the majors. FWIW, the pitcher crop this season is not that great. I suspect that the Twins might look to EU for some signings as well. Cuba is a wild-card because of the recent political change
