$131 MILLION That's the extension he received from the Jays. Apparently we weren't willing to give him that. I do like both Martin & SWR & do think SWR takes another step forward. He may not have the firepower arm, but he is a very high IQ person and I like his development potential A LOT! Reminds me of Jose. SWR has some bulldog in him I think 👍

Definitely 👍 Rocco will love having a 3rd catcher and he's hit well so far this spring.

Exactly this! Analytics & Data, and all these advancements in measuring results are a beautiful thing for the front office, and a curse for managers. A good friend of mine is an NCAA record holder in basketball, and had some big time skills. We talk about some of his games. When he was at his best and just filling it up in front of 20,000 people he was "in the zone", and he describes this as a state of consciousness where he is simply reacting out of instinct, no thinking, almost floating around the court. Like Gretzky used to say "I skate to where the puck's going to be" - I remember Buxton commenting a few years ago on this topic. He is also at his best when he isn't thinking but reacting instinctively. How do you put all these analytics into someone's head, and then get them to play out of instinctive reaction? You need a HIGH IQ to pull this off. Absorb the nitty gritty analytics, but clear out your mind when you step between the white lines?

🎯 Exactly. Falveys job is to construct a roster around a philosophy to win championships. Every decision should build upon previous decisions, and every decision effects every other decision. Who are we, what are we trying to accomplish, and how are we going about it? Good comment!

Great article! Seems like our only significant move will be trading owners this off-season. Which could actually be more important than anything Falvey could do. I favor acquiring the most quality pitching possible. No one ever has enough high caliber pitching. MLB Tonight says the Padres are also making King available. The only reason they can be floating Cease and King is because they each have 1 year left, the Padres won't resign either, and they want salary relief, stud prospects & a MLB ready guy or 2 that doesn't cost much.

No. He was obviously hired to be a Falvey robot. I was being generous.

This old guy suggested Jeffers play 135 games and we trade Vazquez and was told its impossible for a catcher to play 135 games and we need 2 starting catchers. Baseball is different nowadays i am told. Mmm. Just a dumb old guy here thinking baseball is baseball 👍

Bingo 🎯 It's philosophical. Like some football teams "script" their first 25 offensive plays regardless of "in game" circumstance. Rocco is scripted. Falvey needs to back off on the 'script" and let/encourage Rocco to use his instincts and feel for the game to make decisions. I felt we were out-coached many times last year and often felt it was because of a pre-scripted decision, rather than a "in real time gut feel" for the particular game situation.

Indicating Rocco still expects a move or two to be made yet? That's good news. Hubie29 says based on Brooks comments last night he expects to get the most time at 2B, and felt that was his preference. Sounds like Rocco is prepping Royce for 3B and that's also probably his preference. I do like playing guys where they are most comfortable. Good comment Thanks!

I also feel Duran is a trade candidate. I've got to believe he is worth a ton to someone like the Dodgers or Yankees. We've rarely sold high on anyone in the Falvey years so this would be unusual for him. This would move Jax into the closer role, which probably satisfies his agent who is likely the one pushing hard to switch to starting to make more money. From what we know, Jax didn't throw a fuss about staying in the pen. Same storyline served Glen Perkins very well. Jax has the chance to become a top tier closer.

But why have lots of things changed? Culture? We baby children and helicopter Moms are everywhere. Do we now baby players? How the hell did players do what they did 20-30-40-50 yrs ago, but now they just can't? The training & conditioning of today vs training & conditioning of the past? It makes no sense OTHER THAN we're babies and we baby people.

Why are we more fragile today? Asking as an old man. Ivan Rodriguez, Yadier Molina, that wasn't that long ago? What's more grueling about catching than when i watched Bench & Fisk do it nearly everyday? Jeffers is a big strong kid. My real point was shedding a $10M back up catcher who doesn't hit very well is a good idea, and it's not a good idea to trade Jeffers.

That's silly. 8 catchers played over 135 games last year, and we cannot afford a 10M back up catcher. Jason Kendall played 15 seasons and AVERAGED 135 games per year. The article was about trading Jeffers which is crazy. Trading Vazquez, as TD has written repeatedly about, isn't about needing another catcher in return, it's about salary relief, and he's not that good anymore obviously.

Whitey was proposing trading Vazquez not Jeffers. I've been reading articles for months on trading Vazquez and NOT for a catcher. I don't understand this comment. I like the idea of trading Vazquez and giving Jeffers 135 games.

🎯 Correa/Buxton/Lopez = 60% of our team budget And obviously a Team with a $130M budget cannot possibly afford a $37M shortstop. I liked being the Piranha's I liked being the Bomba Squad Who are we? We have no identity.

The Ishbia bros or any other buyer is buying for the future. This will be a long term investment. Present circumstances won't matter. A buyer will buy for his own potential development regardless of current condition. Current revenues and expenses will have a say in purchase price, but it is really about potential development as we've seen with the Wilf's and others. Purchase price will be about development and scarcity. There are only 30 of these teams. It's a scarce and exclusive group.
