Will be interesting to see how we build the 2020 starting 5 this offseason. Free agents, Trades, combination of both. I suppose the argument can be made to trade whoever is the most valuable of the 3 you mentioned. All 3 can't play LF in 2021.
-
Should the team then have an interest in trading Mitch, and couldn't we expect a pitching haul for such a bargain catcher? Guys like Grandal are commanding 14-15M. I am not advocating this, but seems we have quite an asset here at $500K.

Back to the 2020 payroll, I am interested to see who we try and extend if anyone? Assume Berrios is the top target? Where does the FO stand on extensions for Sano/Buxton/Rosario/Garver? Is it smarter to ride it out for another year, and save 2020 payroll on these 5? Do you trade 1 or 2 of them for pitching, and extend the other 3 or 4 of them? I would think a season like 2019, and this incredible offense lends itself to prioritizing keeping as much of this group together as possible.I can't see tinkering too much with this starting line up. Seems our best offensive prospects aren't ready to start the 2020 season. All focus of effort this winter should be on starting pitching - and on extending the core nucleus in my opinion.

Who’s Winning the World Series?
In My La Z boy commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
I'm looking for a rematch of 1991 - and again we win game 7 at home. Berrios goes 10 shutout innings and Gene Larkin knocks in Dan Gladden with the winning run. Then Jose Berrios signs a 60 day contract with the Vikings to assume QB duties, and leads Minnesota to its 2nd championship in 4 months. Either this...or Astros/Dodgers as you predict.- 5 comments

Well said. In a nutshell, I think our FO was blown away by our performance and success this year. I think they would have bet the farm that NEXT year would have been the year, NOT this year. I think it caught them off guard. Trade deadline came, and we still had a decent starting 5, with Pineda looking better and better. Hindsight is always 20/20. I harbor zero blame on our FO. Riverbrian rightly describes the playoffs as a "small sample size on steroids" - in other words, anything can happen. Getting the division, ensuring us of a 5 game series - gives us a chance. All you can ask for is a chance. I like our chances.

Week in Review: Closing In
In My La Z boy replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Looks like he is playing again on Wednesday. As cautious as this front office has been this year, I highly doubt anything is wrong with him right now. They wouldn't start him again if something were wrong. I don't get it except to say the front office is giving him every chance to make the post season roster. Therefore I blame his performance entirely on him. No excuses. He's playing, they agree to play him. Results are squarely on him and not his ailment. Also good for Kyle, I have not heard him blame his ailment. Why are we?- 38 replies

Twins May Pick a Postseason Specialty
In My La Z boy replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I totally agree with your premise, but if we need 13 pitchers in a 5 game series we're not winning. I like 14 position players and 11 pitchers. Maximum flexibility in a short series is a must I think. I am counting on Rocco going longer with Jose & Odo - and counting on these 2 guys for 7 or 8 innings - and if the series goes 5, these 2 will pitch 3 of the games. I am also counting on Duffy, Rogers & Romo to appear in all 5. Also, I don't see Rocco playing Arraez in LF in a playoff game. 5 man bench of Castro, Cave, Austudillo, Schoop & Wade. -
I'd start Duffy in game 3. He's our best pitcher right now.

The Future Value of Luis Arraez
In My La Z boy replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You are probably remembering the fall of 2014 and Mr. Danny Santana. In my opinion, Arraez is no Danny Santana. But in Sept of '14 I thought Danny was the 2nd coming of Carew too. He came out of nowhere and lit it up for a couple of months. -
Are we done with Gibson? Once and for all
In My La Z boy replied to magiklair's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I think it is those games he has every once in a while where he looks like a #1 stud. He has shown, every once in a while, he can just be unbeatable. Then he'll stink it up for 2-3 weeks - then come out of nowhere and throw a world class gem again. Then stink it up again. Flashes of brilliance. No sustained brilliance. I think that is your answer. -
There are no baseball stats to measure the effectiveness of resting players but there are metrics used to measure rest and recovery on the human body - which are being extrapolated to insinuate the baseball benefits. The assumption being made is if the body gains these benefits of rest and recovery - then the baseball stats will benefit. It is very subjective in my opinion. To Chief's point - A Football analogy would be the tailback who just keeps getting better into the 4th quarter after being fed the ball 30 times. Would he have been EVEN BETTER if he had taken the 3rd quarter off and only carried the ball 20 times? I don't think so. All this resting and recovery stuff is subjective, and player specific. Maybe it helps, maybe it doesn't. Its not as common sense as the human body stats may suggest I think.

Excellent attitude. Beautiful day - Wish I were there. Lets win 2 today!

Will be interesting to see how this team handles Sept next year when we can only expand to 28 players. We'd be fresh out of team if this were the rule this year. I think the FO would have made different choices this year if that were the rule. Maybe it will be a positive. With very limited call ups you're more likely to see a Kiriloff or Rooker added I think.

Annoying game indeed. Rocco didn't manage the staff last night to win. Leaving Gibson in too long - putting Stewart out for the 6th. I agree he prioritized saving our high leverage guys for Cleveland but we don't have one game to waste in my opinion. Limping to the finish line here. I agree w/Tom - with our line up right now, it is no sure thing we beat up on Chicago Detroit and KC.

What should we do then? Does he still have peak value this winter to another club? Based on your analysis - and I tend to agree, shouldn't we trade him? It would be a shame if this analysis comes true, and we never get the value we've been hoping for, either on the field for us, or in trade for top notch pitching.
-
Guessing we have more courage to trade potential stars for pitching, than the courage to sign someone to a monster contract? I wouldn't be surprised if we make a big trade this winter. I would be shocked if we sign one of these high dollar players. Cole no way - he'll get $30M + per season. We need to move an outfielder of significant value, and a shortstop of significant value to receive back some starting pitching of significant value. We look loaded in the corner outfield and the middle infield heading into the offseason this year.

Pineda and the PED Stupidity
In My La Z boy commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
I wonder if the front office knew this before Aug 31st? Then I wonder if they knew, why we didn't pull the trigger on a starter? Buxton for Syndergaard would have looked real good in the rear view mirror today. Jaylin Davis would also look good in RF doggonnit. I will give the FO a pass on that one. The Dyson deal looked good at the time, and we had our outfielders. Now we don't have Dyson and we don't have outfielders. This team is limping it right now and I hope we can regroup and hang on. Anyone can get hot in the playoffs. -
I recognize it was Bert & Jim Kaat talking but they both made the point on Berrios that putting him out on 3 days rest would have been more beneficial than giving him the extra day at 5 days rest going into the RedSox game. I do get the "recovery" metrics of today's game and won't argue the statistical merits but this is developing into a pattern for Jose. 2 seasons in a row now for him. On the outfield - ouch..I think everyone now wishes we still had Jaylin, and not Dyson. That may prove to hurt. Who'd have thought we'd be so far down the totem pole on outfielders in September.
-
Very frustrating. Positives are the way I want to wake up this morning. For the playoffs -We have a solid #1 starter. Wade won't be in right field. Rookies won't be put in high-leverage situations. Buxton & Gonzalez will be in the lineup. Back end of our bullpen will be rested and available. Will open up on the road. I sure hope Rocco plays tonight and tomorrow like playoff games. The only chance the Indians have is to sweep us now. We may have given them last night with some of our decisions. Pressure is on us tonight I think.

A Stab at the Twins Postseason Roster
In My La Z boy replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think the final 4 or 5 spots to be decided will go to whoever is hot this month. Small sample size last night, but no way Willians is left off if he remains clutch. No way is Graterol left off if he keeps throwing zero's - no way Dyson or Gibson get on unless they prove they are healthy. If Gonzalez is healthy Cave doesn't make it - Adrianza is a lock either way he plays this month I think. Will also depend on the 1st opponent, and their staff, and their strength's. Also 1st series is only a best 3/5 - may see a different roster for this one vs the championship 7 game series. If Big Mike keeps this up he gets game 1 - if Perez keeps this up he gets game 2 - if Berrios keeps this up he gets the bench. Sorry to say that but he is our #4 right now.- 22 replies

Twins Need Rosario to Rein it In
In My La Z boy replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I love Eddie. He does bring the swagger and attitude every championship team needs. My hope is to see him reign it in and become more polished and disciplined in those moments of consequence on the field and at the plate. Not sure if he is easily bored out in left field at times, or if he has a hero mindset at the plate late in games? For whatever reason he is certainly not maximizing his ability as he could. Such great hands and quick wrists could be better harnessed and better deployed I think. Now do other GM's see this, and are willing to pay a kings ransom for him this winter? Probably not. If not, we need to keep him. Tons of raw talent here, and still alot of refining and developing work to bring out the best in him. He is no where close to his peak ability in my opinion.
