  1. I am thankful Odorizzi took the QO from us. Based on this deal he probably could have got a 3/60 ish type of deal in this market. Please go get Michael Pineda now already before our options disappear.
  2. Wheeler is going to get someone to give him a 6th year and it's going to be a 130M+ Cole/Strasburg will be at 6/240M+ I say we wrap up Pineda this afternoon - and start contemplating trades. I hope I am wrong but these starting pitching dollars being thrown around do not sound like Twins financial territory to me.
  3. One of the factors in play in my opinion is how to get Mitch Garver more ab's? I think the way is going to be 30-40 games at 1b. I don't see us signing any infielders, and I hope we don't waste a dime on much other than starting pitching. Gonzalez played an exceptional 3rd I thought last year. We are a better defense with Gonzalez at 3b and Sano at 1b immediately. We have no shortage of options for the infield. Based on my reading so far, it is going to take a motherload to reel in Wheeler - the Blue Jays are hawking Pineda right now - it is go time on quality starting pitching, and if we aren't willing to "overpay" it looks like the Phillies/Chisox/Angels et all will. The market is well in favor of the pitchers this year. It is going to take a potentially unreasonable amount of dollars and years to get one of the top 5.
  4. The jury must still be out or Lewis wouldn't have spent so much time in Arizona playing CF & 3B.
  5. We'll know a little more tonight after the Cron decision. Rumors has the Brewers shopping Hader. 4 years of control, and a $4.6m number next year. Wolfson says we are talking to Boras about Ryu. With everyone apparently wanting Wheeler I am skeptical we offer the most? Maybe we see a blockbuster trade for a #1 starter? Hoping if we don't pony up for Wheeler, that we make a trade. Hate to lose prospects, but this is the off season to go for it. One way or the other, I am hopeful the off season rumblings this winter include 2 stud starters please to go along with resigning Pineda.
  6. Looks like we will let him go and I agree. Adding $25M per for Donaldson looks much better by subtracting Cron's $7M. Leaves a Sano/Garver/Gonzalez rotation at 1B. Improves the defense greatly at 3B - gives us another slammer bat. The Donaldson signing and the release of Cron only eats $18M next year. Plenty of money left for pitching. I like this direction. I want to see Garver get 500 ab's next year. He needs another part time position to do that.
  7. Painful as it sounds, selling Arraez now is selling high. This is how you do it. Think of all the can't miss guys we held on to, that ended up missing? That being said, I see Arraez as a future batting champion and an excellent lead off table setter, and I like his chances to be an all-star. If it isn't a haul (Contreras or Baez or Darvish) then move on. I could see the Cubs partnering with us on a blockbuster.
  8. The left side of our infield will be a major point of decision this winter. I am not so sure we break camp in 2020 with Sano at 3B? He isn't a DH candidate. He needs his head in the game, and his DH numbers in the past prove he needs a spot on the diamond. 1B is the only other option. I wonder if we make a bid to sign him for a couple more years, or if we receive major interest in him and look to make a trade? Or if we roll the dice and let him play out his remaining 2 years and see what happens? And if we do that is he at 3B or 1B for 2020/2021? Not exactly sure what I would do? Depends on; 1) Interest in him by other clubs 2) Willingness to reasonably sign extension 3) Readiness of someone else to play 3B In any event the poster is accurate in that the left side of our infield is in the best shape its been for quite a while. Polanco keeps getting better with the arm and glove I believe. Maybe Lewis is the future 3Bman? Maybe the future is next year? Maybe we go for broke and sign Rendon? I'm in on us. I am looking forward to 2020 more than any season I can remember.
  9. I have a great deal of confidence Falvey will get this offseason right. I like the type of thinking this post represents. Whether Alcantara is the guy or not, I do believe we'll see a mixture of moves, both signings and trades. I think we'll be bold.
  10. We know Cole isn't happening - really not sure if we can lure the 2nd tier either, and I do agree a Darvish or an Arrietta would have been painful. Minnesota is not the usual destination of choice for these guys, but this winter we have an offense to brag on and to utilize, to draw some names that normally go the the east or west coast. I would think a Madbum or a Wheeler would feel confident in giving consideration to Minnesota for an excellent chance at a World Series run. In my opinion, going hard after both of these guys is a must this offseason.
  11. I blame Terry Ryan for this even being a discussed topic. This is the winter to sign expensive top of the rotation talent. No flyers this winter please. We are too good to play around. Picking and poking through the trash heap was a favored off season pastime of the former regime. I hope we have moved past this. We have plenty of our own flyers to pick and poke around with in AA & AAA. All estimates say we have around 70M to spend. That sounds like plenty of runway to land some firepower.
  12. Sorry - read it as both Twins and Non-Twins; I predict the Cubs will try to move Darvish and Kimbrell I predict the Mets move Syndergaard
  13. My prediction - 2 blockbuster trades this winter. 2 extensions I am not in on a big ticket free agent signing; Rosario/Alcala/Duran for Darvish/Kimbrell Buxton/Balazovic for Synderggard Sign extensions on both Berrios and Sano
  14. Yes and Yes - Players association traditionally sets the rules favoring veterans, at the expense of rookies. We'll see what happens next. Buxton case has no merit. Bryant does. The Twins deserve an extra year I believe. I also believe we either sign him or trade him this winter - making this irrelevant.
  15. Exactly. Seems $7M wouldn't stop us from signing anyone we go after - but if it does, don't do it. Whether prospects Kiriloff or Rooker are ready next spring or not, we can play Gonzalez and Sano at 1B - I'd like to see Cruz there at National league parks. 3B can also be manned by either Gonzalez or Sano depending on other IF options. Arraez seemed good at 3B if needed and maybe Gordon makes the team at 2B. We need pitching the most of anything and I'd throw Cron's $7M at pitching and probably take a pass on resigning him.
  16. If we "sell" on him this winter, we will be selling low. That is never a good idea. The return won't be worth it.
  17. Agreed entirely. I am always talking Twins and your last sentence is my point - IF we had 2 starters like the Nats/Stros - we just may have won it all this year. We proved "you can't slug your way to a title with bad pitching" - I am not, and never would suggest we trade away our chance to slug in order to acquire pitching. I am an old man and understand the need for both. My opinion, 2019 was the best offense we are ever going to see - and it didn't get it done. 2 stud starters was the missing ingredient.
  18. Little harsh here? I am neither "ignoring the reality" or "Guaranteeing success" - I am responding to the posed question - and am suggesting we be open to moving Buxton because ACE starting pitcher's are obviously crucial to making a WS run - hence Nats v Stros example. And guess who also had 20 other good players? - We did.
  19. Your thinking here is logical. Might even work better by implementing the "opener" strategy. I do like the idea of creating certain rhythms so relievers have the same advantage starters have in preparation. I also like the idea of niche relief. Everyone should carry at least 8 relievers next year. So you have 3 specialists who open games, 2 specialists who work middle relief, and 3 late game high leverage specialists who close games.
  20. I think Buxton is more valuable to other teams and I think he is the one to trade while he still is of utmost value. One more injury plagued year with only 2 years of control is the risk you take by waiting one more season to cash in on his upside. This winter may be his last at peak value. Now I don't necessarily want him dealt. 2019 is a good example of his value when he plays. Can we ever get 140 games out of him? This is certainly a worthy discussion. No mystery on why it is Nats v Stros - we will see the very best 4 starting pitchers in all of baseball in this years WS. We need to be open to any ideas and options available to acquire high quality starting pitching this winter.
  21. Good take Ted. The other side of the argument is maybe more powerful. Rosario doesn't bring us a stud by himself. Buxton or Kiriloff probably do. Rosario still has upside - maybe more upside than Buxton or Kiriloff - debatable. Will either Buxton or Kiriloff materialize - I don't know? I suggest Rosario has already materialized with more upside to come. This is why Falvey was hired. To make the right call. I am not convinced Buxton will ever stay healthy and give us a season. No one can know if Kiriloff will fulfill his promise. I say Eddie keeps getting better and I say he is our swagger guy. Every champion needs a swagger guy - an attitude guy - a clubhouse guy, and Eddie is one of the young guns who all came through the system together. There is some karma there I don't want to mess with.
  22. Yes I hope they attempt to sign him - and I would give the QO if necessary. Playoffs this year prove what we all know. You cannot have enough quality pitching. Cannot. Love to see what the Nats did - after Harper. Pitching rules the day in October.
  23. There is a thriving industry called "Motivational Speaking" for a reason.
  24. MLB Tonight had a good piece on Berrios - When he is on - he is throwing it high and hard inside to right handers. When he is off - he isn't throwing high inside heat to righty's. Our advantage is also our lefty dominant lineup. NY will be throwing righty's at us all weekend.
