  1. Personally, I have a much longer criteria to determine an "established vet" than one year in a fill in arrangement. Escobar is in no way an established vet in my book yet. I hope Santana gets the job immediately if not sooner, and well before he forgets how to play shortstop. A new manager will likely find it reasonable to play the players in position instead of out of position.
  2. Get Santana to shortstop. Escobar is the utility guy. Nice breakdown by Kirby_waved_at_me. I am sure that the new manager will understand platooning. I think only one manager didn't, and he will not be managing the Twins anymore.
  3. I think the risks the Royals took make it happen. Good for them. Prospects can be so over rated, especially if you trade them off when they finally become the player that can help win you championships. If you favor the sabr.......... all the wrong teams have advanced. Baseball is so much more than stats. Intangibles win World Series', not the season boxes. I do like champions to get to play for the championship, so I have to go with Baltimore and St. Louis now. I really don't like wild cards getting hot and winning. Their reward is to get to play in the playoffs. Still..... it would be fun to see the Royals continue the spirited play and surprise everyone, and bring the championship to the "lowly" AL Central.
  4. Joe Mauer needs to hit like a 3 hole hitter to be always penciled in there. He hits like a 2 hole hitter without the speed. But he does have deceptive speed. Unless he earns it, he is no longer a 3 hole hitter. I don't see Buxton or Sano coming up until June or July, maybe the end of May if they are going balistic. Sitting out a year really does take you backwards. It will now take a little time.
  5. OBP is always good. But......... the only time a walk drives is a run is if the bases are loaded. I too hope Dozier figures out how to hit for at least a .260-.270 average. I would take that and the same OBP and less walks any day of the the week. That would give Dozier more RBI and less personal LOBs and the Twins sure could use a higher average as a team with RISP. I like teams that we know and love and not a lot of strangers. That is what the trends have been - to have a team of strangers. I hope Dozier sticks and keeps improving.
  6. I was one who predicted a career year for Joe Mauer in 2014 - 30-35 homers and at least a .333 average with 110 RBI. It has never ever made sense to me that a man 6'5" and 240 lbs could not be a homerun hitter with that "perfect" swing his dad repeatedly said would bring the next .400 hitter to MLB. I fear that marriage and fatherhood has taken focus from the ball player. I root for him to become what he once was while playing the very little taxing position of first base. It is sad that Morneau was forsaken for Mauer. If Joe wants to be a father and a husband above all else, maybe he will do the Ryan Dempster and sit out a season without pay and figure it out. Otherwise, there are 23 million reasons a year to focus and do the Twins right. He needs to evolve and develop power that carries 10-15 feet further with that "perfect swing" and just hit it over the shifts and into the stands. He is a huge man. Time to man up.
  7. OK. I just figure that anybody's performance to date counts. Anything projected is something that a jury is not allowed to consider. A jury can only consider something that happens. What May did happened, and counts. Meyer can't be considered yet. Years after Span has been helping the Nats, Meyer still hasn't happened. Nolasco - yup, that 2014 performance really really happened. All year it happened. That is the thing about most things in baseball. It all counts.
  8. I don't understand why Nolasco and May are not included in the terrible decisions by Ryan. Both are the direct result of the Terry Ryan genius.... Nolasco by free angency and May by trade of the last centerfielder at the time....... in fact, Worley should be in there, too. It sure is a shame that Worley appears to have been totally mismanaged and coached, after his performance bookends in Pittsburgh and Philly (maybe the Pennsylvania factor?) Terry should be fired now, before the new manager is selected, and the new GM should get to decide that. The second best thing that could happen now, is that Ryan picks the new manager, and then retires gracefully.
  9. do you think anyone would see him? maybe it would teach him to look?
  10. That would be great for him to go to the Rangers. I think his future is limited, as he has not embraced changes in the game well - changes in the personalities of the younger players, the newer analytics, platooning, and playing people in position - but he deserves to see if he can manage to success without inheriting a team that was set up for it before he takes the helm. I am pretty confident some team is going to buy the kool aid and give him a shot. nicksaviking makes some great points about the value he may have suffered the last 4 years. If he goes to Texas, maybe he will do the Twins a favor and take fellow Oklahoman, Mike Pelfrey, with him.
  11. Ted Williams would not have sat out the last game to insure the championship. Congrats, of course, but I think it is a real disappointment that he didn't win it competing on the final day of the season. Moving Mauer to first was sure costly, and in more ways than money.
  12. It's about time! Years later than it should have happened, but at least done. Having Ryan fire him does not bode well for getting a new GM, too, at this time. That is the only bad news about this development.
  13. The change has to be the general manager and the manager. Immediately if not sooner. I can't even bring myself to type the names. Do it right now, still during the season to get more press. Set Molitor as interim manager, and don't be in a hurry, but get out there first for all the prospects that could take the positions. This needed to happen years ago. It is more than time. Do it now. Today.
  14. Folks like to point out that Pelfrey had a "good stretch", and hope that he can do that for a whole year. Unfortunately, the good stretch is rare for the man throughout his career. Pelfrey would fit in as a car dealer in Oklahoma, though. Aw shucks.
  15. It boggles my mind to read that defensive metrics rate the top three first basemen defensively to be Pujols, Cabrerra, and Mauer. Twins fans seem to love Dozier's defense and have disdain for Plouffe's. These ratings show that however the results are arrived at, the formula for these metrics leave a lot to be desired to come up with these results.
  16. Ball Four by Jim Bouton. Every baseball fan should know the then Seattle Pilot's manager Joe Schultz's two favorite words.
  17. Gardenhire is not even playing Santana at short while Escobar is out! We have centerfielders playing right and left and a shortstop in center. Santana should get all the starts at shortstop for the rest of the year. Put either Hicks or Schafer in center, and Nunez can play left or right as well as Santana plays center, and they are all in the game if that is what Gardenhire is trying to accomplish. Personally, I don't get it at all, and he said a few weeks ago that he wanted to see Santana at short. Actions speak a lot louder than words, always.
  18. It was thought that Pelfrey would be all systems go for 2014. This is a repeat of the mistake made with Matt Capps. Yup. Best to try to trade him in the off season and get going with the future. Put Pelfrey on the market and shop him incessantly. If he is as good as supporters hope, it should be an easy deal to make. He will be traded next year at some point, anyway. It is just a matter of how insignificant the return will be.
  19. It has been time for the big change since 2007. It is already 7 years late. Yes..... change the management immediately if not sooner.
  20. I guess it is time to trick the prospects, and the ones that should be in the top 10.......... just rank them 11-20.
  21. Billy Beane knew.
  22. Relax, Jose Berrios.......... it is just Rochester, not the show. No biggy. I don't get why Pryor isn't getting a look. Even just a few innings. Yeah.... the surgery. That didn't stop him pitching in AAA. Let's see how he does.
  23. I recently saw a video of him hitting in the cage. He looked to be free swinging.
  24. Buxton surprises me. To have the most valuable prospect play in a league that is not directly under the parents control.... especially in the post concussion period ...... it surprises me. Here I am, thinking Buxton is too fragile to play baseball, and is just going to get hurt. I guess it will take at least a full year where he can stay on the field to have that change now.
  25. Meyers is as ready as all but Gibson and Hughes, and even they have had several games that mirror some of Meyers. There is really nothing to lose by giving Meyers a shot before the end of the year, that is.......... since they missed his whole year and can't turn back the clock.
