  1. Why not just trade Meyer for a centerfielder? The Twins don't want to promote him anyway. I hear he can be traded for a pretty fine center fielder.
  2. While I am in agreement with you on center and the 5th starter, I think Shane Robinson deserves to be considered a major leaguer. He has always been a fine sub/replacement player in his time with the Cardinals, and he hit .429 (3/7) in 3 games (2 as a pinch hitter and a start in game 6) in the 2013 NLCS. He hit a Major League pinch-hit solo homer against the Dodgers (Howell) in the 7th inning of game 4 for an insurance run and a 4-2 lead and the final scoring, and had two singles off Kershaw in his first two at bats in the clinching game 6, tagging Kershaw with the bases loaded and two outs for a couple more RBI in the third. He may not be the answer for the Twins in center, but he should definitely be considered a major leaguer. I feel the bullpen will be a major problem until they get some help, hopefully from Burdi and Reed.
  3. Don't you have to plan for the 40 to 50 games that Mauer will be out because of injuries?
  4. To demote Vargas after last season for his recent spring training at bats is maddening. This team appears to be in a lot of trouble. To have Pinto get hit in the head 3 times in the same at bat is crazy. I didn't see the game..... did he move back? After the first time, why would anyone let him be close? Was the dugout asleep? Was Pinto nuts? How many times has Adam Jones hit someone in the head with that extended follow through? I can remember several, and I really don't follow him.
  5. This is a bit off topic, but I see this claim a lot, and it needs to be addressed. This still doesn't appear to be true. Just as the Metrodome was bigger in virtually all dimensions than Target Field..... (but is commonly and wrongly referred to as more spacious............) http://www.ballparkmagic.com/PlayingField.html .....other than just down the left field foul line and maybe the first 20-25 feet in, new Yankee Stadium is more spacious in left field than Target. http://www.andrewclem.com/Baseball/YankeeStadium_II.html
  6. “Out of the stretch, he started elevating. He got the strikeout on the high fastball but his pitches were changing,” said Molitor. Bumgarner sure looked good elevating and then elevating more against the royals in game 7. Exactly what is wrong with elevating if the result is a strikeout?
  7. If the Twins don't want to give Meyer a shot, I hear he can be traded for a pretty darn good major league center fielder. Do the Twins need a center fielder?
  8. Except......... Meyer has been given no starts in spring training. Not a one. He has been used in relief for all his innings.
  9. Perkins says "wear-down", but he looks soft and chubby and not in shape, and he gained that chub througout last year. I hope he is ready, but my real hopes lie with Burdi and Reed in the second half of the year as Perkins' soft body wears down more. It didn't surprise me at all that he strained muscles that weren't ready to pitch.
  10. Plus, Doug Mientkiewicz will be their manager. And it will be warmer the first month. AAA is where the guys that bat in the later innings of spring training play (like Doug Bernier who is 34, 35 in June). Replacement players. It seems that doesn't apply to Twins' pitchers though. I know there is more to it than that, but this is part of it.
  11. ..... and now everyone thinks they are a comedian. Great request, though.
  12. Bullpen. I have been thinking this since the end of 2013. While many touted that their performance was because they were just used too much because of the starters getting shelled early and overuse, I think they were just not very good. I loved all the flaming relief arms picked in the draft will many mourned the choices. With Perkins coming to camp with his chub acquired throughout last year still intact and soft, it will quickly become apparent that Burdi and Reed and others in the pipe are more of an immediate need. I am really surprised that Burdi and Reed were not even invited to camp (and we watched Finnegan in the World Series). I think the other most immediate need is an ace, but the Twins seem to want to keep those in house possibilities in the minors, and we know that they will not go out and get one on the market, and will tout that Hughes can be an ace and was last year. Maybe so. We will see if he can stay at that level soon. Watching the bullpen getting shelled against AAA batters this spring (and today) has not been encouraging. Just signing "innings eater" starters with 4-5 ERAs to long term contracts will certainly mean that the bullpen will need a lot of use.
  13. Nunez did make me cringe the other day when he totally took a bad route in left field and misplayed the fly/drive that dropped in as he flailed on his butt slide and missed it in the 8th inning with 2 outs. Ouch. Just one play, but it looked like Delmon Young was back. http://m.mlb.com/stl/video/topic/8877482/v46957483/stlmin-easley-delivers-rbi-single-to-left-field/?c_id=stl Nunez did keep it in front of him, though.....
  14. Maybe I have missed it, but what velocity is Milone's fastball coming in at in Spring Training so far? I was always concerned that the difference in his fastball and change was about 7 mph last year. So far, the only pitchers that have actually received starts this spring training are Gibson, Hughes, Santana, Nolasco, and Milone. Meyer, May, Berrios, and Pelfrey all came in after the starters. Does that mean anything?
  15. ".........Would he (Santana) remain in center field, where he excelled last year and where the Twins have no clear frontrunner......." I never felt that Santana excelled in center field. I would call it adequate to poor defense. I am looking forward to seeing what he does at short. If he proves to be a liability, and he is still hitting and center field is still a problem waiting for buxton, then he can try to get better in center and take over for a spell, I guess, but that would make the outfield defense just horrible.
  16. As long as the Twins continue to stockpile replacement players that are 29-34 years old in AAA (many we now see playing in the Spring Training games in the second half of the games), the real prospects that will actually make the major league team will continue to jump from AA to the show. There has been plenty written on this site, and other fine articles elsewhere, about the lack of need for many to play in AAA at all. I think they will be just fine with Doug managing them in Chattanooga. More than fine. I think that is the best place for the group.
  17. The only way one truly knows how to pronounce a name is to ask the source. To rely on announcers as the definitive source of pronunciations will get you a lot of wrong versions. The current adventure in college basketball is J.P. Tokoto (TOE-ka-toe), forward for North Carolina. I have been hearing many wrong versions all year, and even more tonight on the ESPN website highlight reels from the woman that narrated it. The home team announcers, hopefully, will get it right, though. Maybe one of the TDers in camp right now can ask Berrios directly?
  18. Prior would probably have washed out in the minors while playing for the Red Wings for yet another season to correct his walk ratio and save another year of Twins' control. I think a world series championship is always worth it. That is the reason the game is played. All speculation that it may have happened, but fun to think about.
  19. Sharp single to left........ runner more than likely will not score from second. Same with a sharp single to shallow center, in a lot of cases. That is were Mauer hits a great deal of his singles. The third base coaching judgement and decisions will hopefully be better this year than the last couple of years. That will help.
  20. I am a hopeful buyer. This is a very key year for him. One cannot live on past laurels. He was one of the greatest catchers ever. If one just considers his performance from 2011 forward, he has been a different player. Injuries are part of the game, and part of his performance. He really is at a crucial point. He either starts to become a great firstbaseman, or he doesn't. If he doesn't, career stats won't be very representative of future potential or expectations.
  21. Target field is NOT bigger than the Metrodome was! I see folks saying that a lot (not in this quote), and it just isn't true. Target is smaller in all dimensions except 1 foot directly down the right field line and a tiny jut just left of dead center. Right field is virtually the same and the dome had a higher wall (baggy) and left field is about 5-8 feet more shallow in Target Field than the Dome was, depending exactly where you measure. Left field is larger than right field in Target, so right field is not "more spacious" than left field at Target. The overhang certainly is a challenge in right field, granted.
  22. Skeptics will note that Rosario batted .237 with a paltry on-base percentage of .277 in 79 games at Class AA New Britain last season. How do you turn that into Rosario being in center field for the Twins on April 6 in Detroit? “I don’t want to put numbers on him,’’ Mientkiewicz said. “You just have to challenge Eddie. If he’s challenged, there’s not a lot he can’t do.’’ I hope Molitor does well for a couple of years...... but I hope to see Mientkiewicz managing all these young guys into the World Series. It is a new age.
  23. The Twins should just have Graham tank spring training, pitch horribly, and then the Braves will trade for a lower level prospect, and situation solved. Graham can then get ready, if he can, at Rochester, and have a chance to be called up when Fien or Stauffer or Duensing or Thielbar tank. I would love to see the pen being rocked by Reed and Burdi by mid-season. Let's get on with it. "......and the most troubling part is that he saw no performance boost after moving to the bullpen in the final two months, allowing a .378 batting average with seven strikeouts and five walks in eight appearances." This is just not encouraging. There is a reason the savvy Braves, who develop great pitching, didn't protect him.
  24. Hey........ signing anyone to a long term contract hardly ever works!
  25. There is a reason that Graham wasn't protected by the Braves. He is no where ready to hold down a spot in an MLB bullpen or rotation. To give him a spot all year would be a waste for any team. That doesn't mean that he may comeback, and he may develop (or may reinjure his arm). He is a giant question mark. To make the Twins roster a 24 man roster plus Graham all year with all the prospects in the mix would not be a decision I could get behind.
