  1. Or..... "his team" could actually be for his own satisfaction and self expectations, and not wanting to give up. And that deserves just as much respect. Do you think it would have mattered what team, or any team that he was under contract for? I would think it was just as much a hope that he could make it back, and to prove it to himself, or fail trying. I wonder if, just because you try your best, that the motive is to help your team, and not to prove to oneself that you tried your best, even if it wasn't helping your team, and you knew it. There comes a time that, if one has team first, that the best help for that team is to not take the mound, to walk away. That is not as romantic a thought, but it might be more truthful. It is hard to face the end. Probably the toughest thing every player has to face.
  2. I really can't see any team starting Hughes, if he doesn't just retire, in the show. That would be somewhat foolish of them, but I guess it could happen. I suspect wherever and if ever he lands, it will be to start in AAA and give the confidence to the signing team he is able to perform. He could actually do that here, too, perhaps, if offered, which isn't really known that will happen. It might really be up to him at this point. He might really have his best shot at staying in the show right here, and getting it back together at Rochester. But I really hope that doesn't happen. Or, he could take a break, take a rest and longer to prepare, and then have a showcase toward the last half/third of the year, and see if he can be a force, or even just a replacement level option for some needy team.
  3. I think 3 accepted the QO in 2016, and the first one was in 2015. With big names hitting the market in 2018/19 off season, and what happened this past off season, I bet names not so big will be have a harder time refusing a sure thing. But then, it might also be less likely that the 2nd tier even get extended the offer, for the risk that they will take them. It will be interesting, for sure. And Marco Estrada of the Blue Jays got extended a QO in 2016, but instead of taking or refusing it, resigned with a new deal. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2589177-mlb-free-agents-2016-list-of-players-who-accepted-qualifying-offers
  4. Maybe. It is not unusual for a team to extend a qualifying offer to a player they know will refuse, just for the draft pick. It was well known that Lynn would not be accepting a QO, and thought he would be cashing in.
  5. Maybe. But the assumption that either Santana, coming back from a hand surgery on his pitching hand, or May, coming back from TJ, will be as effective as before the surgeries might be as shocking as Lynn having reached the beginning of the end of his track. The Cards had absolutely no interest. That says a lot to me. This is a quarter of the season gone, and in only 37.1 innings on the mound, and regardless of his 41 K's, he has given up 29 walks, 47 hits, 31 earned runs, which has made every team he faces a team of .313 hitters, with an OBP of .422 and an OPS of .929! Trade value? I don't think any GM is gonna ignore that, even if he rattles off a few usable starts. He is torching the pen. Letting MLB ready players age in the minors, reducing their possible prime years, never makes a lot of sense to me. That clock is ticking, too. It is also not unusual for a 31 year old pitcher, or any age pitcher for that matter, to have lost his effectiveness, regardless of his track record. Plus he missed all of 2016 with TJ surgery, so I don't feel that saying he has no injury is all that accurate. Matt Harvey comes to mind, as a recent example. His first year back was similar to Lynn's 2017. Lynn also faded big time in September of last year, so this is now about a 3 month history, with the one start a couple starts ago the outlier. So I stand by my crazy take, and would love to see this team advance with youth that is looking more than ready for having a go at it. I said on another post a couple days ago... would you rather pay Hughes millions to lose games for the Twins, or to lose games for another team? And I feel the same about Lynn. We will see if the FO has the same courage to jettison one of their own decisions, as they just have with one that wasn't theirs.
  6. How much longer do Lewis and Kirilloff need to blast in low A? I think age is insignificant. Would the Miracle really miss trotting out Foster and Lopez? The only way one really knows if they are ready is to let them have a shot. I don't think either one of them are too fragile to have it mess with them, and would relish the opportunity.
  7. Last year, I was all for Kepler getting more at bats against southpaws. I never believed he couldn't hit them, but just needed more opportunities. Even though his OPS against righties is only .694 this year, I hope the same people don't call for him to be benched against them. ;-) I just wish he would breakout with a higher average, now, too.
  8. The best decision I have seen the FO make, in their short tenure. I am proud of them. I would be even prouder if they did the same with Lynn, and brought up Gonsalves. I think Phil knew this was coming before the season started. I would feel sad for him, but there are still 20 million reasons that it isn't that sad. Worth $44.7 million for one season? FanGraphs has some fuzzy math.
  9. Bremer was calling it on the broadcast........ and also making note of it himself. It is in the replay posted, too. Maybe it is just Bremer making stuff up. I don't really know, I guess. https://www.mlb.com/twins/video/c-2057834683
  10. But please, don't replace him by having Grossman play in the outfield. His bat is not much better, and his defense weakens two outfield positions, as one of Kepler or Rosario, or both, move around, too. Buxton might not make runs, but he usually saves one or two a game, which is almost the same as creating runs.
  11. How is that new batting/hitting coach doing? The offense is really tanking.
  12. I just don't get it. The Twins' in the dugout were upset at Cain for trying to score (and he almost did) with his team up, 6-0. Just playing baseball. He is supposed to try to score. Should they be upset at Kepler for hitting a home run? Shouldn't he just give up by then, if Cain shouldn't try to score? I don't get it. This is baseball, not the NBA, where even in the playoffs, teams just basically quit if they get behind, and don't even try to win that game. I hope the players always do the best they can, no matter what the score. Buxton is even getting pinch hit for..... by Grossman! It is a sad state of affairs.
  13. Regarding Lynn...... which is better: to pay 10 mil and have him lose games for us, or to pay 10 mil and have him lose games for some other team?
  14. There is a reason that the Cards cut bait with both Lynn and Duke. The longer this goes on, the more painful it is going to be.
  15. Bring Wilson Ramos HOME! A catcher that can hit doesn't have to be a figment of the imagination. Ramos' contract is up at the end of the year. If they don't make a trade for him, sign him then. Castro would make a great backup in the final year of his contract. Or trade Castro then. Know any team that would pay him $8 mil a year? Now is a perfect time to add Nick Gordon, while Polanco is out. Never ever play Grossman in the field. In fact, he needs replaced.
  16. The Cards had learned to doubt him, too. Even without this year's numbers. His spot in the rotation should be in great danger with Santana and May in the upcoming picture. Should be, if winning is the goal, and not playing the salary. Of course, nothing says that May or Santana will find great success, necessarily. I like to assume that they will perform just as good as they have, or even better (especially for May), but these injuries were significant.
  17. Magill. This was Duke's third day in a row, and Magill had Saturday off (after pitching scoreless innings with no walks and only one hit total on Thursday and Friday). And Magill is right handed. Magill has had a real nice run since acquired (surprisingly to me), and it was a great time to see what he had, especially after coming up big in the 8th on Friday, in a tie game. And he is right handed. Oh, sorry. I already said that. Definitely not Duke. Definitely Magill, had it been up to me, which, of course, it wasn't and isn't. Thanks for asking.
  18. Escobar's throw to Dozier's shins wasn't a great help, either, eh? Though play that had to have two perfect throws.
  19. The Twins' 9th was loaded. A single, a double, and two walks, and not a run. It was a great play that got Adrianza at the plate, but man he seemed slow. The bases loaded, and the hottest hitter of the series at the plate, and a first pitch foul pop up. And not a run. The Angels' 9th was so short. 8 of the 9 hitters in the game at the time were right handed! The next six Angels' batters in a row would be right handed, and the Lefty was brought in. Those 87-88 mph fastballs were just what the doctor ordered. 5 pitches and the game was over. Duke was still in after hitting the first right handed batter with his third pitch that he lost total control of, the only curve thrown. It was impressive to see a first pitch bunt that was perfectly executed. No hesitation. No missing the ball or a fouling it off. Not one failed attempt. He just squared up and reached down and bunted the low, 88mph strike perfectly. I was so jealous. And with a runner on second, in scoring position with one out, the next hitter, Cozart, was another right handed batter, and the lefty was still allowed to pitch his 5th pitch to him. Was anyone else amazed it was Duke, who was so perfectly used to get one dangerous lefty (Otani) the day before..... was anyone else amazed or disgusted that Duke got the call there?
  20. Gibson gets respect, somewhat grudgingly. Good for Gibson. Good for the Twins. I like home grown products, and cheer for them the most. Rentals and tourists stopping by, not so much.
  21. "Garver was charged with a passed ball the inning LA tied the game." This one didn't hurt the outcome, thankfully, as after striking out Cozart on that at bat, Pressly walked Trout (albeit the 2nd pitch was really a high strike that was miscalled) on 4 pitches, and Calhoun would have then been on second to be driven in by Upton's single, anyway.
  22. I think the Twins are currently 10th or 11th out of 15 American League clubs in fielding right now.... surely something that was not expected.
  23. I'm not knocking Royce, either. It was just a point of interest, and I found this meeting interesting, because they were both considered 1st in draft options. And this night, McKay got the best of the whole team, while he was in there. I am sure there will be times it doesn't turn out that way. I try not to imply. I can't help if anyone else assumes something that is not said. I hope Lewis becomes a superstar. I also don't hold much to the age argument. Age is insignificant once the competition starts. Look at women's (or maybe is should be called girls?) gymnastics. I know a lot of people do, but there are early bloomers and late bloomers, and once on the field, it matters not to me.
  24. Well that was a surprise. My favorite part of the game tonight, was that Molitor only used Duke for one out. Finally.
