Article: Offseason Primer: The Core Seven (?)
h2oface replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There is no core. No core 2, no core 3, no core 4, no core anything. Maybe at the end of next year this can be a discussion with merit. If you settle for any of our players being core right now, your expectations will be self fulfilling mediocrity or worse.- 42 replies

Well, I bet Stearns expected what Yelich (and Cain) did this year, and that is why he traded for him and gave up what he did. It doesn't really matter what no one thinks, in the end, just what the one that makes the move thinks. Good fortune is always part of it, but Stearns was just doing his job better than most others. I have to give him credit. Calling the right shots and his analysis of the move to make was hard work realized, and nothing to do with luck, but process.

Interesting that Houston, with Stearns as the assistant GM, gave up Hader for Gomez, and then Stearns became the ultimate beneficiary of the move as the GM of the new team. I hope that Falvey can rival what Stearns has done, and not be the co-director that turns out to be the weak link. The Brewers are pretty damn impressive. I really enjoy watching them play. I keep thinking that the Pressly trade and the Reed signing (among others) don't signify a good start, but what is a Twins' fan to do, but hope for the best in the new season. This was my favorite article of the year. Great job, Nick.

They Aren’t Making Ballplayers Like Joe Mauer Anymore
h2oface commented on GoGonzoJournal's blog entry in Minnesota Foul Play-by-play
If he would have had to retire after his concussion episode..... he would have been a shoo-in, like Kirby Puckett. Playing out his contract as a light hitting first baseman.... could very well make that not happen. The bi-lateral leg mystery doesn't help, either.- 7 comments

Article: An Offseason of Intrigue
h2oface replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This whole idea that shortstops and catchers shouldn't hit, or it is OK if they don't, is so lame. MLB players should all hit. To accept those that can't is why teams don't win pennants. -
I might not be the best driver in the world, but I always look behind me (and around the car) before I get in the car. If I run over something that was there and I just didn't see it, or didn't clear the path, I feel like a moron, and I know I am totally at fault. If I run over a living being (or hit them, etc) because I just didn't see them but should have..... I can't just brush it off and think.... oh well, just a stupid mistake. It is huge, regardless of intent. I don't know how running over someone and breaking their legs isn't "reckless driving", regardless of whether one doesn't see something, because it is our responsibility to not move until we clear the path. I also don't drive a car that doesn't have plates.... I really don't like to talk to police if they initiate the conversation. I have never enjoyed a conversation with a cop that started that way. I might forget my wallet very rarely, so I can sympathize with not having ID. Plus somebody would have had to pay the tab. ID and wallet always together. Just think if Sano and Puig were on the same team. Never a dull moment.

Article: Miguel Sano Detained In Dominican Republic

What a waste. Time to cut bait. The guy just can't grow up. Maybe he should get some counseling from Randy Moss. http://articles.latimes.com/2002/sep/25/sports/sp-moss25 -
Article: Twins Daily 2018 Awards: Pitcher of the Year
h2oface replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Now that is encouraging! I look forward to his progression to Scherzer numbers of today, and hope he can truly become that kind of consistent ace starter. One day, our pitcher of the year might win 20 games and have a season ERA around 2.50, 250+ Ks, 225+ innings, with complimentary other stats. Call me old school, but I still like to see wins close to 20 for a pitcher of the year. All the isolated stats are great, but in the end, a team's wins is the most important stat there is. -
Article: Twins Manager Paul Molitor Fired
h2oface replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ozzie Guillen is a clown, in my opinion. There is a reason why he never got another MLB job after the Miami debacle. Actually, many many reasons, and not just the Miami mess. I never liked that Molitor got the job to begin with, and thought he still should have been fired after 2017, and 2016 for sure. But the fact is, he only managed the sad state of affairs the our FO thought would be so good. The free agent's performance wasn't their fault, but it was their choice. What is Molitor's fault, is that he managed what was one of the fastest teams in MLB, even without Buxton, and the team leader only had 8 SBs.- 284 replies

Just pay a player what he is worth, already! If he has a 10 million dollar season and he was under contract for 500K... give him a bonus! The system has been rigged now to not pay players when they deserve(d) it, and to over pay by 10 to 50 times when they don't by the long term contract. Things are really screwed up. Everybody wants security, and it really doesn't exist. Each team should have a pool of money to disperse. They should all get a salary based on past performance as a base for the year, and at the end of the year, the rest should be divided up as deserved from the season's performance. Now the young players are exploited.

De Jong's 2018 average pitch speed is 4 mph under the MLB average (89.2 to 93.2), his average spin rate is below the MLB average (2216 to 2263 rpm), and his average exit velocity is above the MLB average (89.8 to 88.4 mph). It is nice that he has had a couple of good games. I hope his future is somewhere else, though, and the Twins get some pitching that can take them to the playoffs.

Busenitz, Littell (sort of), Curtiss, and Magill (1.2, sort of) all had clean innings. Call me amazed. I can't see how Gonsalves arm will play in the show.- 22 replies

I have always thought the berger was lucky. It seems to have run out. But that doesn't stop Molitor from exposing him over and over and over.... and over and over. May is certainly failing his audition. It appears relief with men on base is not spelled M-A-Y. 500-pound fastball. That's funny! Perhaps Stewart just needed it to count - turn it on in the show. Detroit counts, right? But he also did it against Houston. That definitely counts. Does pitching against the current Twins' lineup count for Turnbull?

Article: First-Round Flops or Unfinished Projects?
h2oface replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
At #24, in 2015, the Tyler Jay year, the Dodgers took Walker Buehler, who has been amazing this year. In 2009, at #25 (Kyle Gibson at #22), Mike Trout was finally selected by the Angels. It is often said that these are outliers, and all (most) the teams passed, on these examples. They all used their stats and scouts and advanced stats of the time, and evaluated them as not worthy of the many failures that have become litter ahead of them. Say what you want about the current way the stats are used to select the hierarchy of the draft. It fails way more often than it succeeds. Is there a better way? Maybe not. But I want the people making the selections that see the missing links, that picks guys like Walker Buehler and Mike Trout way ahead of the consensus group peer think. I guess that is too big of an order. Maybe it is all just luck after all, and the guys like Falvey and Levine could just as well be any other gambler. -
Article: OAK 7, MIN 6: Khrush Davis Walks Off Twins
h2oface replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
HBP, single (first to third), sac fly single, single (first to third), sac fly Berrios is a hard worker, and has discipline. He has "stuff". But his season results is a lot like Blackburn, and is no where near an ace. Maybe he will get better. But right now, he is overrated in my book. Twins set MLB record for 10 walk off homers given up. That is our bullpen, in a nutshell. Seems that the 9th walk off wasn't noticed, as it also set the record.- 16 replies

Let's see. Sliding. Throw you body on the ground, smoothly and at high speed, in fact, the fastest you can make your body go self propelled......... and don't practice? That would be over thinking? To learn and practice until it is second nature and you really can do the motor task without thinking? That is partly why a team that was called the fastest in MLB at the start of the season (and still would rank very high without Buxton) can't steal bases. And Molitor was a natural base stealer. Too bad it doesn't translate for his team. Golden Sombrero for Sano. Now below the Mendoza line again. Just shut him down already. Bregman, Bryant....... stars...... and Sano is a disaster.

Article: Learning Leadership from Chris Gimenez
h2oface replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Gimenez - "Derek has a great eye for pitching so that should be one area to look forward to as they move forward. Thad is great with people and relationships as well as advanced metrics." Derek picked new pitchers that bombed, and the report is also that these guys do not have people skills, but are "cold". Proof is in results. Belisle and Gimenez ........ I mean really.... just how inspired can a young player be with these guys as their (self?) appointed leaders? -

I love it! Linus talking about a security blanket. Spectacular! -
Can anyone direct me to a site that I can easily pull inherited runs scored and variations..... individual and team. These bullpen pitchers have been brutal to their teammates this year. I am curious to see just how bad it is, and compare to other teams and players. May's line doesn't look too bad, if you don't consider he let 4 runs cross the plate.

h2oface replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This team didn't have room for Aaron Hicks. What a shame, and how foolish it was and is. 10 walks. Wouldn't it be nice if the farm was even close to ready when the get the opportunities. Call me depressed and disgusted with this team.
