  1. Health concerns, makes a lot of money on a losing team and will be a free agent after next year. I think the saying was better to trade a player a year early rather than a year late, see several ex-twins for examples. Sellers market he should bring back a lot! But it might make more sense to fire Ozzie!
  2. Package with Span for Meyer and Smoker I'd do that. Edit: after looking up Smoker or Taylor maybe find another player or 2.
  3. A couple wins we can get back into this thing! Isn't that the goal to be in the thing? Or is the goal to field a team that has a chance to win a playoff series or two? We are now well over a year and a half of being the worst team in the AL record wise. It is time to admit that we lack talent and the players we have are not doing the job (manager and coaches are without fault). But if you want to keep telling yourself they are only a couple wins away, good luck next year and beyond!
  4. Drew calls the wrong pitch, Span can't run the bases TR waits much longer he won't get anything. Of course, the teams are lining up to pay all Mornies salary and send us a quality player so not all is lost.
  5. But would Ryan spend the extra money or would we just see the payroll go down into the 80's? I tend to think not all the savings would be spent.
  6. 10 years of supp. pick by the Twins, 2000-2009 track record is not good! Aaron Heilman (didn't sign), Matt Fox, Jay Ranville, Hank Sanchez, Shooter Hunt and Matt Bashore. Zero for 6 may be one reason our talent is lacking. Better be sure Frankie is worth 12+ mill not sure the pick is worth much.
  7. "Twins are asking too much" I would hope that TR would start high. Weed out the tire kickers and get to serious business. With so few real assets he better get good return. We need a serious talent up grade!
  8. I think it is a warning that getting by on so so stuff may not last. We have seen it before a pitcher or even hitters will look great for a time and the league will get a scouting report and they will came back to earth. Did Valencia forget how to hit or did the league find a better way to pitch him? Pitchers with so so stuff have to rely on location more and if that fine line of good location and poor location fades things can go south fast, we've seen that many times. Plouffe may be the same case no homeruns for some time, he's getting a lot fewer meatball fastballs. While his average is showing good signs the homeruns may be much farther apart from now on.
  9. We have what 20-25 mill to spend next winter if payroll isn't cut again. Why would you spend any of that on Baker when you have no idea if he will pitch next year and if he does will be any good?
  10. Great news now we can make a real playoff run. That little pitching problem is fixed.
  11. Is contraction still an option?
  12. I hope when Liriano is traded they trade Butera with him!
  13. "I realize that this thread was started by someone who was trying to defend Mauer's worth. Heaven knows I didn't expect to come on here and defend Mauer. I just wish we could have a moratorium on this whole subject." That will only happen when they resign Punto. Reply Reply With Quote Blog this Post
  14. #1 he gets paid about twice what any other top catcher gets paid. #2 he has only started 42% of the Twins games behind the plate. So it's hard to compare him with full time catchers. #3 Players that get paid north of 20 million are run producers driving in 100-125 runs a year not 80. Is he a very good singles hitter, yes. A very good obp guy yes but those guys aren't worth 23 million. An 80 rbi, number 3 hitter can't make 25% of the payroll no matter where he plays part time, imo.
  15. Good luck with this one kid! A bird in the hand is better than Tommy John surgery next year!
  16. Bring up Valencia, move Plouffe to 2nd and let them play the rest of the year. Plouffe plays first when a lefty is pitching, C & C are utility guys. Carroll is old, Casilla has shown enough times he isn't an everyday player. Find out what these other guys can do for an extended time. Either they are the future or they aren't. Stop screwing around worried about a win or two the rest of the way. It's time to established what the core of this team will be going into next year, imo.
  17. The Twins will win the Central with a 81-81 record after trading the even number top 20 prospects to Phil. for Hamels and the odd top 20 prospects to the Brewers. for Greinke. They roll to the world series and win it all when Blackburn pitches a perfect game in game 7 beating the Wash Natl. Ryan said after the series that trading away the top 20 prospects in the system for a series win was the right thing to do, he was retiring for good this time and Bill Smith would be taking his place again, Smith was not available for comment he was in Japan scouting light hitting infielders.
  18. The Giants gave up Wheeler a possible top of the rotation guy for 2 months of Betran last summer. Span for 2 months plus 2 years at a decent rate should be worth a top B+, A- prospect (I wouldn't take less). He may not have the impact bat that Beltran does but you get him for cheap and he should hold his value down the road if you need to move him. NO RELIEF pitchers!
  19. This one is on Gardy. He was a shortstop (being nice here) he is said to be a great coach and if that's the case Dozier should be in the right spot right under Gary's tutelage. He doesn't look ready, do we have better coaches in AAA that can work with him?
  20. Dfa him, nobody will pick up his contract (except maybe the Rangers) then send him to Roch. Let him finish the year down there, maybe he builds some value or next spring he makes the team with a big come back year (being funny). At this time he doesn't belong on a major league field! If they are just pitching him because of his contract our future is lost anyway.
  21. CC and Pettit both go on the DL today, perfect time to get max out of Frankie, after a very good start and a team in need with assets. Ryan call the Yankees today!
  22. OK parmelee is doing nothing on the roster. Sitting on the bench does him no good or the team any good. Bringing up Valencia does make sense becasue he fits what they need better. I would think that he should play 3rd on the days a lefty is pitching and Plouffe can play first, however. Giving Morneau a day off now and then against a lefty is logical and having his bat on the bench for later in the game is a big plus. It also wouldn't be a bad thing to have Valencia on the bench agaist a lefty reliever late in a game. It would appear that Valencia isn't going to fit in the Twins future so getting him some at bats where he could succeed might raise his trade value from the now broken bat level.
  23. Does Ryan have any history of signing starting pitching in free agency? He has signed a lot of scrap heap guys but has he ever signed a quality free agent? Is there any reason to think he might start or is it more likely he cuts payroll further next winter?
  24. If the Twins play .600 baseball they get to 83 wins. How many teams in baseball are playing .600 baseball? How many of those teams have starting pitching like the Twins?
