  1. "To suggest that the Twins couldn't have used that $13M to improve their ball club this year is ridiculous. It doesn't mean they would have spent it wisely. It doesn't mean they would have competed. But it's silly to suggest that would have made the team worse." Agree 100%
  2. We never seem to run out of excuses, trees, schedule, injuries, umpires you name it. In the end the payroll numbers mean little if the decision making of the front office doesn't change. Terry, Billy and all the scouts remain the same, the coaching staff remains and yet we expect a new and better result?
  3. Joe Mauer has never played in a playoff game the Twins won. Not saying it's his fault but it does indicate how long ago Henry Blanco was the catcher in the last win, and AJ the win before that. I think Blackjack has it right they will attempt to field a team that can stay close next year, they want people to stay interested, buying tickets and beers.
  4. "no chance" are your words. Who did I call a stiff? Building a playoff type team takes steps and part of that is being prepared for injuries and failures. The last few years this team hasn't really had much of a backup plan. Lack of depth is not unique to the Twins it just seems like it always or nearly always comes into play with us. My question was are we just trying to compete or is there a longer term plan in place to be a quality playoff type team? (I can't see us ever buying a team like some do with a 120m or larger payroll) If you just want to compete you keep all these guys and try to find a few starters to fill out the rotation. If you are looking at building a strong playoff team it probably means trading some of these guys and building up the talent level in the minors for a run a few years down the road.
  5. Where is the bar set? Compete for a central title, or field a team that is playoff caliber? Adding a couple mid level starters and an upgrade in MI may get you a chance in the Central but it won't make you a playoff quality team, imo. Without very good top of the rotation starters getting far in the playoffs is slim at best. Looking at next year should also include what we have this year and are these guys likely to repeat. Are Willy and Doumsie going to stay healthy and productive their track record says probably not. Will young guys like Reverie and Plouffie repeat in a soph. yr? Will M & M boys stay healthy? This team has been very heathy this year amoung the position players, that is not likely to repeat. All of the big bats have a history of injuries and all have been healthy, hold your breath because our depth is next to zero!
  6. This is so bad I'm starting to feel sorry for the guy, if he wasn't making 3 mil a year I would.
  7. The Cleveland radio guys are beside themselves with how bad Nishioka is. Those guys have to watch the Indians every day so they know bad when they see it.
  8. Is this the same Nishi that couldn't hit or field last year? He has to be better than last year, right?
  9. Sioux Falls would be a great place for a Twins minor league team.
  10. They have 67m in contracts for next yr with Nishi and the Capps option. 8 players without those two guys so they'll need to fill out 17 players with the balance of 23-33m. We have no idea if the payroll will be 90 or 100, guessing the final cash flow will tell that. Not really a lot of room for 8-10m contracts with that many guys fitting into what's left.
  11. I would doubt Baker even gets an offer until next spring/early summer when he can prove he can pitch again. He likely won't be ready to pitch until June. There isn't the extra draft picks a team could get in the past. Not having all those extra picks like we had this year means that they better be good because you have less chances. That comes back to the scouts and player evaluation guys, they are the same guys that said Nishi was the real deal, they said Ramos wasn't considered a top prospect anymore (a direct quote from Ryan after that trade). So yes Smith did a poor job but the guys providing the info are the same with the same guy in charge of drafting. Ryan has a scout background so he may do his own work unlike Smith but the real change is the talking head is now Ryan and not Smith. Not exactly a purge of the org.
  12. Well Mike they have 67+ mill tied up in 8 players and 2 lost causes. With a 90 mill payroll they'd have 23 mill to spend on 17 players. Any solid starter will cost at least 10 so do the math kind of hard to fit 2 in there isn't it. Now if they trade Morneau without paying much and or raise the payroll, which I doubt, 1 solid pitcher would be the max. More likely 2 dumpster dives.
  13. I agree with this. The twins last won a playoff game in 2004 since that time the White Sox have won the world series. The Indians have been to a game 7 of the AL champ series and the Tigers have been to an AL champ series and to a world series.
  14. Young and a long way away but his future sure looks better than what Burton offers.
  15. I think that would be fair value. Possible top of the rotation lefty and a middle infielder with upside. Both areas of great need.
  16. Question nothing, 2 plus 2 equals 5.
  17. No playoff wins since 2004, 99 loss season last year, 14 gms under this year and the feeling from a lot of people is things are ok, a bandaid hear and there we'll be ok? I can't help be a lot depressed.
  18. It does go to the point over an extended period of time this has been a mediocre team. These are not random numbers this is the actual record of games played. I did not cherry pick from May 16th.... If you are happy with mediocre fine, I am not. Time for a change!
  19. In 2006 they were a very good team and went 0-3 in the playoffs. Since that time, the 2007 season thru now the Twins are 455-459, 914 games not a small sample size. When you consider they play in the Central which tends to be a weaker division, that isn't a record of a great franchise. (73-127 against the East) To think things are ok and we aren't that far away is silly at best and the record over the last 5 plus years points to a team content with being mediocre.
  20. The 2008 season thru yesterday, not a small sample size, the Twins are 376-376 a .500 team. The White Sox are 390-361; 29 games over. That's not a lot better but when you consider all the talk about how great a run the Twins had the reality is they are a mediocre team that luckily plays in a bad division. (remember no playoff wins since 2004). Thinking that the Twins are the superior organization would then point the finger at the field staff not holding up their end.
  21. 111-157 over the last two years and we are ok? If you keep lowering the goal, now play .500 so we can be in it in the central, then i guess we are ok.
  22. Take the best offer no matter what team makes it otherwise you are making your own team weaker! If you aren't taking the best offer you should be fired!
  23. It really is funny to think they'd take any savings on salaries traded and use it next winter on free agents. Has there ever been a time when the Twins did something like that? More likely they'd just lower next years payroll another 10m or more and come in around 80m, which with Morneau gone would leave some money to spend or go in Jim's pocket. I really think the $110m or so we had last year will be the high water mark for a long long time to come or at least until they build a new stadium.
  24. Blackburn???? How much would we have to pay for somebody to take him? I don't see how trading in the division is even a factor at this time of year when he is a free agent after the season. Do people really think he could come back to ruin our season?
