  1. so you think no other g.m. wouldnt extend burton? Walt Jocketty let him go. Jocketty is considered one of the best.
  2. If Hermsen adds MPH there should be steroid testing done. It will be interesting what develops from last year's pitching selections from the draft as they get a full year under their belt. Can Bard start. Is Baxendale a legit starter. Can any of the drafted relievers become starters.
  3. Many people think Braeburns are applesauce with a skin on them. I would think someone who likes Braeburns would like Mauer. When he plays poorly he is like a Braeburn. When he is good he is like a Honeycrisp. Best apple for baking is a Winesap. Are we going to discuss oranges next?
  4. Wow. How soon we forget. David West was a highly coveted (maybe the most coveted) prospect/young pitcher at the time. Aguilera was a solid #3/4 starter at the time. Tapani was an upper prospect. Drummond and Savage were throw ins. A solid starter, 2 high end prospects, and 2 low end prospects is a pretty good haul for a B+ pitcher (Slightly below the Clemens/Maddux level at the time) at the trade deadline. Aggie was not considered a solid starter. If he was, they would not have converted him to a reliever. He was going back and forth between the rotation and bullpen in New York after some early success . In the Times archives, West was cosidered the prize. Tapani and Savage had been filler in earlier trades.
  5. @SVD (better than an STD) What the Twins got for Viola A pitcher that the Twins could have gotten for a low level prospect that they turned into a closer. A pitcher with an undistinguished Milb record that had a great three year run and three stiffs.
  6. In 1991 Viola was coming off a third place finish for the Cy Young as a Met. It was his final season as a Met and an All Star.
  7. Even if Texas signs a starter why would Texas be trading SP/ Feldman, Oswalt, and Dempster are off the rotation, Holland becomes your 4th starter, Lewis your fifth. A prospect can take over when the summer heat becomes too much for one of them.
  8. Reever, Morneau, and Butera?
  9. Realize that reality is not what many of the posts are based on.
  10. Marcum might be the highest rank pitcher the Twins can sign without grossly overpaying
  11. Do you have an idea how they work? Anti player sentiment with so many on this board ripping Pohlads for making a profit. Funny. robbie is that you? Are you really that much of an ass?
  12. Do you have an idea how they work? Anti player sentiment with so many on this board ripping Pohlads for making a profit. Funny.
  13. ****ing Obama! The players Union was founded in 53. It gained strength in the early 70's. What does Obama have yo do with that? Nixon and Ford were president then.
  14. Way off subject. Look at who did the rankings. After you say "who?" you will have your answer. Or Thyrloss is messing with people again.
  15. You could be creative and go a little lower around 16 for 2 with a generous bonus for IP. Make it a win/win.
  16. Davey Johnson doesn't manage the Orioles. I don't see any way the Orioles win more then 80 games next year. Not in that division. You could have further informed him that Buck Showalter is the manager. At 56 he can be around for as long as he wants.
  17. Salcedo barely pitched in high A. I don't thing anyone would take him.
  18. I do not see anyone disagreeing with the concept of Doumit needing to be a better catcher. The criticism of the metric is very sensible. When the creator of the metric says it is flawed to use the data to make your case is not a good arguement.
  19. Perhaps Jorgenswest forgot the key point in the article he referenced And finally, before we get started, the disclaimer. These splits are not necessarily indicative of skill. They measure less than one full season and include many other factors that should be corrected for. As time passes, we should be able to complete more technically rigorous analysis (that's the royal we, as in someone else who knows more about statistics) that may begin to clarify what percentage is skill and what percentage is unexplained/random variation. Until that time, I strongly recommend not using this information for anything more than entertainment purposes. Even the author did not believe his numbers.
  20. To prove that it was framing that caused the ball or strike call there would have to be consistency in calling pitches by the umpires. I don't think you can prove that.
  21. If you don't think they could be a 3 or better you probably don't sign any of them to much more than a minimum contract. Incentive deal for Jurrgens, maybe Karstens. Gorzelanny as a lefty insurance starter in Rochester so Duensing can stay in the pen would be a very wise investment
  22. The only way Revere would be extended is an extreme lowball offer. Revere wouldn't be stupid enough to take it, nor would the Twins offer it. The Twins have to be hoping that better OF are in the pipeline that would relegate Revere to 4th OF status.
  23. If there is, it'd involve Salty, so Ross really doesn't change that. That said, it'd be incredibly surprising for them to make that move after just dumping the long-term deals that they did. The Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, et al, don't rebuild from the ground up. I would be surprised if Boston's 2013 payroll doesn't quickly jump up here during the FA sweeps/ trading season, and then in 2014, quickly returns to historical averages. Boston has had a three year slide. What they need to rebuild is almost as much as the Twins. Elsbury and Bucholtz are about their only young stars.
  24. 1. Is DRS as subjective as UZR? 2. Is Chief still taking his afternoon nap as to not weigh in on the subject?
  25. The Twins hired Stienbach in part to make Doumit a better catcher. They can still outright/demote Butera at any time. Any arbitration tdecision o give Butera more than minimum wage is a best a fantasy. It doesn't matter if they tendered him or not.
