  1. They scout these players so they should know what they can or can't do. The question then becomes can the coaching staff put it together for the player to succeed?
  2. Fat Beer = johnny dakota = trader t. IP adressed moved to confuse Brock's monitoring
  3. I really hope you are not serious. Doyle was released by Chicago. After a glorious late summer in Japan he is in the Red Sox minor leagues. In short. if the Twins had wanted him at any point last year they could have had him. Well documented but not well remembered is that any team could have had Slama for free. So his gem must be zirconium.
  4. And what many are posting on these threads is "we do not trust you Terry". Each would be an extreme position backed with little fact. This is the second off season for Ryan with the money to sign free agents. The Twins were optimistic on their four starters from the previous year. Consider what each of them did in 2010. Was 2011 the aberration or the trend for these players? In the fall of 2011 they thought it was an aberration. Big guess wrong. He lost Cuddyer and Kubel and they were adequately replaced. Ryan did sign value players and ended up with a bargain in Willingham. What he will do with a pitcher remains to be seen. A Jackson or Sanchez with a track record of health would be less risky to Ryan than a Dan Haren. I could see him signing a Jackson or Sanchez. I do not see him signing a pitcher with an injury history unless it is a bargain contract. Last winter he didn't find a fifth starter, he didn't find MI help. Those are the negatives from last year. Either he had a very good draft by how highly rated his draftees are rated as prospects or the cupboard was bare. The draft was a positive.
  5. If the Twins are to "overpay" for a pitcher it would be better that it is Jackson or Sanchez. They will be in their prime. To sign the more experienced pitchers is a risky proposition for depending on their health.
  6. ...and Pohlad is one of them! The "liberals" as you term them pass the stadium bills as "stimulus, job-creating investments". The debate in 2006 for a stadium was not about job stimulus. Anybody who wanted a job could have one. The job creation stimulus debate was for the Vikings stadium. facts are a pesky thing
  7. More than Rogers and Jones were added to the Tigers. Career years from players helped. They also fell back the next few years, not winning a division until 2011. Would that then hint that adding free agents does not sustain winning?
  8. Whith nothing tangible and faulty leaks there is only speculation to post about. More than speculation, there is just a lot of baseless complaining.
  9. Other than the Twins Dailey staff, which ones of you out there runs a business to not make money?
  10. Clearly the trend in attendance figure would reflect what will happen when the "product" goes down. To expect the Pohlads to pay money out and not recoup their investment in some point in time is ludicrous beyond belief. There are choices to be made by the Twins. Do they want to compete with the Royals or do they want to compete for championships. If it were competing with the Royals the Bill Smith would still be the GM. The Angels spent a lot of money on CJ Wilson and Pujols, found a rookie of the year in their minor league and only improved by three games. The Dodgers took on a ton of salary and played worse. Ryan needs to find the right parts. A high salary in and of itself does nothing for the win column. Finding the right players does. If you are thinking it is going to happen in less than a month you are being foolish. In checking Forbes 2011 operating profit was less than the last year of the dome and one from 2005 (picked one at random)
  11. So then we agree. The Pohlads didn't put a dime of their own money towards the new stadium. If money is borrowed it is against their assets. They put their money into it. 125 million more than you did. Why are being the east end of a horse going west about this?
  12. You can have an opinion. Being dismissive of reality that there are costs associated with running a club and the stadium is to ignore reality. Wether or not the Pohlads borrowed or paid for it out of pocket is irrelevant. They paid their portion. If they borrowed, it was against their assets and has to be paid at some point. For whatever limit you have of accepting that fact is truly strange.
  13. Interesting Do the Twins draft/sign more high school and international players than other organizations? That would skew the numbers up for time of service. Do the Twins stick longer with pitchers trying to make them starters before deciding to make them relievers? Those are factors that could make your numbers meaningless.
  14. The current payroll stands at about 75 million. It is more than 20 million that Ryan can spend. More like 35-45 million. From that you would need to find 4 starters, 4 relievers, ss, 2b, backup outfielder and catcher. Most of those players will be minimum wage guys. It should leave 30-40 million for three starters and an infielder. The Pohlads would still make money. It can be done but it isn't going to happen in November. Trading Span would mean finding another outfielder with the 4.75. That can't be done easily.
  15. Sure is. Just look at how easy it was for the Pohlads to spend a half billion of other people's money on their new stadium. What's hard seems to be for them to spend their own money. $350 million is how much was bonded by the county. Unless you want to include the Pohlad's 125 million contribution as other people's money. Operating Target Field costs the Twins about 10 million a year and they pay 1 million in rent. No free stadium ride there. There is a hesitance on the Twins part to pay people outside the organization. They have been more than generous within for the players. As of yet we do not know Ryan's capability to gauge free market pitching value. Marquis was a fifth starter. That is what they were looking for. This time last year a starting rotation of Liriano, Pavano, Baker, and Blackburn looked solid. Ryan did ok with replacing position players lost due to free agency.
  16. The innings and a chance to prove themselves is true for many of the names posted in this thread. Astros and Marlins would have a better chance as the pitcher can pad statistics with the other pitchers and more weak teams.
  17. Reports were on 11/9 that he was going to sign with Detroit. Could a fan rumor reporting actually have traction?
  18. Easy to spend someone else's money. Toronto and every free agent possible is going to sign there. "Leaks" are not always truths as the faithful readers know. Are the Twins going to set the market price or are they going to follow? Mauer's contract should be a sign they can overpay. Setting the price for pitching is going to be tricky. All it takes is one crazy team to jack the price and Chicago did that with Baker. All it takes is one team to overvalue someone and they are signed for more than they should have been. Makes it hard for the other teams to assess market price. Will you be aggravated when the Blue Jays are a .540 team and out of the playoffs? There is nothing that says Toronto will be winning much. Cabrera was about a .700 OPS before the steroids. Career .280 hitter. Buerle and Johnson do not project well on fan graphs. Reyes will be in a new league. There is nothing certain in Toronto
  19. You are a guest in someone else's house. Host your own webs site if you want to say whatever you want.
  20. Joel Pineiro, Matt Torra, or someone else like them are the likely cheap signings by the Twins
  21. Bedard could be a good signing to ease Gibson into the rotation. Limit Gibson at the start of the year and during the middle of the year when Bedard goes down you have a fresh Gibson. Bedard comes back in time to take the place of the next player to blow out an arm. What is the price of the player per the handbook that I was to cheap to buy?
  22. Every player gets injured at some time. I would hope every player thinks they should be at a higher level than what they are currently playing at. I hope every player is that competitive. Joe Benson is a reflection of the big league pitching staff. Everything that could go wrong did. I hope no prospect has to go through that.
  23. All sorts of "We could have had" players out there. Don't get too hard on the Twins drafting, Oakland hasn't drafted a player that latter had a + WAR in the majors since 2006. The players from 06 were all traded, too. The same for Boston with Bill James to help them. The Yankees have less in numbers produced than the Twins since 2000. The SABR people do no better than the money people. In 2005 Tampa Bay drafted Longoria and Hellickson. 2006, they got Price and Jennings. Not much help since then either.
  24. Is there a selective lack of knowledge here? Players traded for other pieces that begat other pieces. Players left by free agency. Jesse Crain had a career year in his last year. Signed elsewhere because he wanted to be a closer. The Twins got a draft pick. Baker left and the Twins got nothing. What possible scenario could have the Twins ever received compensation for Baker ? Yes Ryan did not always produce the most talent from the drafts yet he found talent off the other rosters. Examples in Ryan's late tenure before vacation moves were 2 minor league players became Luis Castillo and Buck Buchanan became Jason Barlett. Matt Gueirrier was a waiver pickup. The cupboard was not bare in 2007 when Ryan retired
  25. "Maybe the Marlins didn't want anyone in the Twins system or the Twins might not have been offering some of their top prospects." Ding Ding Ding. Maybe you nailed it. What do the Twins have for highly rated prospects above the low A level? On the multiple threads about this trade the sad fact is the Twins don't have much to trade. If the 2012 draft selections pan out they will have trade chips. Not now, they have nothing to offer other than what they do not want to trade.
