  1. 438 They need to match the number for Correia
  2. No worse than your assumption the Twins DID offer the most money, but the pitcher decided a team that's only been bad the last two seasons isn't worth going to. It's all assumptions, you just think yours are better. All I did was say it COULD be a factor, along with the other factors given by the person who made the post I was responding to Read much? My assumptions that even if (Not did, if) the Twins were the high bidder they would not come here. The best anyone has come up with for high profile free agent signings to a last place team was Jeff Francis.
  3. Gardenhire makes under 2 million a year. If the Pohlads wanted him gone, he would be.
  4. OMG The Royals signed Sherrill, Wheeler, and Tavares. The Twins are doomed.
  5. And one of those factors could be...Twins don't make the best offer... Name one higher profile pitcher then that signed a FA contract with a last place team? I was adding in another possible factor to his list...since it does seem MOST players go where they get paid the most. To answer your statement, most of the teams willing to spend a good chunk on free agents aren't usually in last place...cause they get the talent. So even if it's never happened, it doesn't prove anything. Your assumption that the Twins have never made the best offer has no proof. Logic might be escaping you. Unless there is an overwhelmingly better offer and the team has drastically overpaid, or no one else wants you, why would you go to a losing small market, low media team? . There is nothing in the Twins offense or defense right now that would suggest to a pitcher that you are going to catch a break and thus have a poor record. Less money and a better record might net a bigger contract the next time. You so want to believe the Twins do not make competitive offers that it blinds you to all other possibilities. You also ignore the simple fact that playing on a losing team sucks so why would I want to go to a losing team? A big pile of money to hate life?

  7. I cannot think of a high profile free agent pitcher that has ever signed with a team that has lost as much as the Twins have the last few years. Ryan signed a warm body more than likely because he had few options. It is not like Ryan can sell someone that the Twin's offense is great. Their best chance would be overspending on someone's last contract. That leaves Dempster.
  8. I remember. I know you and I were prime targets for the slings and arrows from the apologists. It looks like my prediction of $85M might have been a bit of an overshoot. One could say that one apparent intent from these maneuvers at payroll paring is that TR is setting Gardy up for his early dismissal papers. Between the two of you can you ever remember a major free agent ever signing with a 180 loss team in a mid to small market? It isn't always about money. Name call those that think differently than you do to try to diminish a point of view but no major free aeant is going to a losing team at anything other than a totally outrageous contract. 6/90 for Sanchez is what the agent wanted. Even if the Twins offered, he wouldn't take it.
  9. People will have to realize the top tier free agents all had the same words for the Twins, "No, thanks" even at any price. Winning draws talent.
  10. The tepid market for Jackson could be due to being on a very good team he was still only a .500 pitcher, whip 1.4, ERA of 4 in the national league, and averaged only 6 innings a game.
  11. Cable and dish usage in the Twin Cities is one of the lowest in the nation. Their TV revenue almost makes them aa small market team
  12. I do not think the Twins will sign any pitcher with durability issues after paying for Pavano and Baker last year. That they paid Pavano shows at least a willingness to part with money for a pitcher they believe will be decent for them.
  13. Do you use "we" to cover your embarrassment at thinking that thought? I was not replied to kingly when I said no way to that thought.
  14. Considering who will likely pitch in their stead in 2013, and 2014 and 2015 for that matter, yes. With a few breaks and a little luck health-wise, the Twins could have been competitive in 2013 and 2014, or at least, more competitive. Obviously, there is risk in all 3. But it didn't take huge longterm deals to get any of these guys. And, Justin Verlander could get hurt too. Chris Sale had a sore elbow last year, Peavy is always a risk. Everyone is a year older, some guys will break down. It works both ways. At the very least, when you tell 22,000 people who have already bought season ticket packages, that you are going to field a competitive team, you should get the guys who, if the breaks go your way, are talented enough to deliver on your promise. I will happily eat crow if Ryan goes out and get Sanchez and Jackson, but that is not looking likely. Instead, if the rumors are to be believed, he is chasing 4 bottom feeders who even if healthy aren't talented enough to put this team into contention. That, would be money wasted. Why not wait until the signings of more comment or healthier pitchers to sign to complain. Then you would not have to eat crow.
  15. Would Baker or McCarthy starting 15-20 games make the Twins competitive in 2013? Would Blanton pitching like he has the last couple of years make the Twins competitive? Giving these players more money than what they signed for is giving money away. Yes, McCarthy on this roster over Deduno does make them more competitive. Does it alone make them great, no. But it makes them better. That should be the goal. If they should only spend money if they are "certain" to win, they should trade every player on this roster that won't be here in 2 years...and then sell no tickets. With McCarthy you would still get Deduno pitching as many games for the Twins as he did last year.
  16. Now that hte high end has been set, the dominoes will fall.

  18. If only the discussion of pitching or of management could have the same rationality
  19. The happy glow from the trades is now gone. Back to wine, snark, and pseudo sarcasm.
  20. Math and reading comprehension. Even at a 100 million budget that would leave 27 Million for 3 players. at 120, that would leave 37. Ryan has also stated he can spend more for the right players.
  21. Let's cherry pick stats and call ourselves right. Over the last 6 years Dempster will win a dozen games, lose about the same, and get to the mound 30 times a year. For that he will be absurdly paid. xfip and War would lead you to believe that Dempster is just above an average pitcher while Lannan is below average. On a very good team he won a few games. Who knows, if cheap enough the Twins will coach him up a level.
  22. al·lude [ ə ld ] mention indirectly: to refer to something or somebody indirectly, without giving a precise name or explicit identification Synonyms: refer, make reference, make allusion, mention, indicate, suggest, talk about, touch on, introduce, refer in passing, make a passing reference
  23. Your retort shows your acumen. It is not out of the realm of possibility that the word concussion will devalue a player. As shown by many players in other sports, the second, third concussions take longer to heal from. One knee sliding into second base, one errant wall in the outfield and Span is done for a while. Span passes a physical, the potential is there. That potential decreases Span's value. Revere has more years of team control. That may have made him a little more valuable than Span to the Phillies. Whatever was discussed with the Phillies was discussed long before Span was traded to Washington. With one less major league ready CF on the market, a team looking for one now has a higher price. The velocity for Burton is unchanged from before his injury. Jockety could have had Burton in his pen.He chose not to bring him back. Nobody on this board with a straight face will ever concede that the coaching here made Burton a better pitcher .In terms of the numbers on the paycheck Burton is giving up free agency time at a discount even if he can't quite maintain the same numbers. Others say because of age he might be worth less. At 35 Dotel was still earning 6 million to be a setup guy. Ryan made an assessment that Burton's numbers wouldn't slide too much. Time will tell if it was a smart move.
  24. Yes, but what were the innings pitched per year by the 8 versus the other 18. Were any of them similar to Burton mechanically.? Compare to similars. How many of the 19 pitched their last years for Dusty baker? The only thing that may be similar is age.
