The whole team needs to take a step forward in some facet. For the three listed, Berrios was taken out after 4 innings in the most important game of the year.. The season should be planned to end in late October. Buxton needs to stay healthy. Kepler, IDK if he could have done more during the season. He disappeared in the playoffs. Nelson Cruz and Garver arehe only 2 players that really can't improve from last year's team. The rest all need to get better. Relievers still have a future at 32, fringe starters do not. As a starter it is easy to see why you would pass on him. As a reliever, he would be Rochester shuttle material.

Littell seemed to have figured something out in AA that year. I don't think it would be an incorrect observation that at the time there was not a whole lot of pitching prospects in the organization that were near major league ready. They maybe could have got him in the rule v draft. Maybe not. If over the next 4 years he is a good set up pitcher then the trade is a good one. I don't think it was a bad one. Garcia was not a long term solution, nor a short term one. The 4 million was wasted anyways. Garcia had a decent run in St. Louis. Nobody kept him long after he was traded the first time. To get anything for him was a plus. In trading Ynoa, they were giving up on a prospect while he still had some value. Like Littell he has some talent but has not reached it. It will still take a couple years to see if it was a good trade or not.

3/96 for Price would make sense only if there was some good reason to bail out the Sox. They are capped out and really have very few prospects. I am not sure either pitcher is a candidate for most durable pitcher. -

If the trade was Lindor for Lux and May as the centerpieces the trade would be done. The hold might be the Dodgers wanting to send a bad contract with the players.

Texas can take on short term salary Money isn't an issue for them Kluber had a bad April. It has happened before and he heated up as the season progressed. Texas made a fine deal. If the reliever is more than a middle reliever, Cleveland gets a solid reliever for 6 years. That may be more than fair for Cleveland

Prospect valuations by the teams are getting better. Except for the Cubs there isn't the star prospect being traded very often. The Sale trade for Moncada, but . Dombrowski isn't a GM anymore. It really shouldn't be a "what if" concern on prospects. If you think their ceiling is going to be met.

Upside, downside. Free agents will have years they are not worth the money. There are more stories like Cueto and Zimmerman than Scherzer. Trades for linepitchers viewed are top of the rotation the same way. Gray and Archer come to mind There really isn't an option not worth trying.

Taking Frazier and Happ would require a top 3 prospect from the Yankees. Frazier I think is out of options.

A trade for a top of the order starter there will be more open roster spots. Position flexibility had been a buzz word. I don't think they will add a 1b only player. Rule V will have a selection. There is always somebody to love out there. There is always a high ceiling fixer upper out there. At worse they are returned, just like most selections are.

The World Series has been dominated by teams that have the ability to spend money. KC won without big name free agents. The Giants won with pretty much home grown talent The Cards had Holiday. Houston traded for Verlander. They got theirs without signing a big name free agent. The key is to have a solid core of homegrown talent, preferably an excess. Maybe the Twins are getting to that point. Houston by producing talent allowed them to trade players that they did not miss. Being able to add the pieces has been a big part of success. It seems like the other teams then value your prospects more. Cole brought back nothing for the Pirates.

By Forbes data on revenue per fan and the baseball revenue sharing system for a 20 million dollar a year player to "pay" for themselves they would have to bring in 900000 new fans. Last year's winning team brought in 300000 more in attendance. The other side is by Forbes numbers, is that it costs about 100-110 million to pay for everything that is not a mlb contract' for the Twins. That is pretty much similar to some other clubs. Although I think it is just an educated estimate it is the best guess they have. By Forbes estimates the payroll could be around 160 million without costing the Pohlads money. There is a valuation on paper of the team. It is not really money that the team can use. If you borrow against the value of your team you become the Wilpons. Sell the team you say. The new owners become like the Miami Marlins. Revenue goes to debt service.

What Twins team in the last 10 seasons was one or two players away from being championship quality? Which team was projected to be a 9o win team that one more player could push it to the top? Tampa Bay made it to the World Series The Royals won one and lost one. Cain was about the only one the Brewers have signed. They made it to a championship series.
