  1. Man, I am so ready for a top of the rotation guy showing up in a Twins uniform. Certainly am pulling for Alex.
  2. Excellent article. Helpful information to put things in perspective. Now lets sign someone you can't rip apart!
  3. I think you are being optimistic about Jimenez and Kazmir. People keep saying it's a pretty thin FA market this year. But I sure like the pitchers you've selected!
  4. Last 3 years Player A: 411.2 IP, WHIPs of 1.487, 1.265, 1.455, bWARs -0.1, 1.9, -0.7, total: 1.1 Player B: 510.1 IP, WHIPS of 1.390, 1.298, 1.419, bWARs 0.1, 0.2, 1.6, total: 1.9 Player A: 2013 FIP 4.50, xFIP 4.39 (Fangraphs) Player B: 2013 FIP 4.40, xFIP 4.24 Player A is Phil Hughes. Player B is Kevin Correia. We already have one of those.
  5. Man, I hope this is recent. Like, I hope he wasn't trying to play through pain, thereby threatening his 2014 season. I want to believe that these athletes know when to speak up.
  6. He crushed in AA but really hasn't done much above that. Will the Twins resign him? Don't we already have enough outfielders for AAA?
  7. I don't think hiring Molitor is bad business. I like the move. Doesn't mean I don't see value in having a Latin American coach as well. I suspect a team is allowed to hire as many coaches as they want, but I believe there is a limit on how many can be in the dugout during a game. Does anyone have info on this?
  8. Very complicated. I am especially annoyed by the evidence that, "Good pitching beats good hitting". I so want to believe otherwise, or that they are at an even level. But the 1987 Twins and the 1991 Twins are evidence to the contrary. Well, Viola & Blyleven weren't supposed to be better than Atlanta. hehehe
  9. Ah, yes... the option year is shed upon a trade? OK. Still would make Kazmir my #1 target. At 30 years old next year I think he's back. And while nothing is certain, especially in the world of starting pitchers, I believe he is the safest bet out there. Unfortunately, is is going to take 4 years $75M to get him. 2014 - 2017 @ $17.5M 2015 - $20M team option with $5M buyout. (and that may not be enough) Anybody here think TR would offer up a contract like that?
  10. I'm a software consultant in the Twin Cities. My oldest account is a place I love to go work, for any number of reasons. Anyway, one of Josh's brothers works there. We had one time a few years ago when we talked Josh & baseball. We pretty much never work together, but the president of the company knows what a baseball fan I am and got us to sit down together. He is clearly proud of his brother, happy for his success. We talked about Dan Uggla being traded to Atlanta. He said Josh and the other young players then were upset because Dan was such a great guy and very helpful to all the young guys. (fit with other things I've read about Uggla) So, I don't know if he has season tix. I know he would go see the Brewers or the Cubs if the Marlins were rolling through. Perfect storm if Josh was pitching in both Milwaukee & Chicago. I don't know if Josh has more family here, though I very much had that impression at the time. It wasn't an interview. Josh's brother is a good guy. So there.
  11. Cleveland has an $8M option on Jimenez. Have to think they would exercise that. Really like your focus on SO. Hopefully TR sees the value in that as well.
  12. Excellent post jorganswest! Very interesting how many teams seem to be ignoring a catcher's ability at the plate. If you believe in some of these newer ideas then it makes sense to me if: you spend millions for pitchers you consider pitching to be the most important position in a given game you want to give the pitcher every possible advantage to make your team successful This is still evolving, though some teams (as you point out) are embracing this approach to their catchers. Hitting is clearly secondary. I'm not saying Mauer isn't a good to excellent catcher. Butera's stats are skewed in that he caught Pavano when Pavano was our ace. More research required before I could manage to draw a conclusion. (and I bet other team fans are jealous when Mauer steps to the plate, too)
  13. Revenues are in excess of $200 million. Allegedly each MLB team is getting another $25 million for television revenue this year. Looking at 54% of that starts looking a lot like $120 million or more. Now I'm not one who is going to go ballistic if they don't spend every nickel of that, or even every $10 million, but they could clearly overpay to get Kazmir. That would tell agents and FAs they are serious and help sign and another good arm. That other arm HAS to be another with excellent SO rates.
  14. To answer the second question first, yes luckylager, you may very well be nuts. As to signing AJ - 1. Pinto looked promising, but it is just too early to say whether he can platoon with AJ or if that would be a good thing. AJ's splits for 2013 show he did not hit RH and LH pitchers very differently. 2. We have had no update on Mauer's health. If Mauer is healthy he will probably be catching next year (hopefully without that titanium mask). 3. AJ says what he thinks. If he and Gardy have a significant difference of opinion it probably won't stay hidden. I don't think Gardy would like that. I guess I don't see this happening. As far as putting a little fire in the clubhouse, I like your thinking.
  15. "The Twins might be the craziest pack of lunatics outside of North Korea, but crazy has its benefits." Awesome!
  16. Yes, except last spring he looked like he could be a ROY candidate in a position where we had just traded our way into near desperation. I guess we now know why we got so much for those two center fielders.
  17. Um, Mauer hit .324 this year with an .880 OPS before being sidelined with an injury. Over 90% of MLB players wish they were suffering such a decline.
  18. Tanaka and Kazmir. Maybe Josh Johnson if the price isn't too steep, perhaps heavy on incentives for innings pitched. That would eat up that $40 million pretty quick, but we'd have a chance to win some games next year if an offense shows up.
  19. Very much looking forward to this young man joining the Twins. Seems like a kid with character. Minnesota fans are going to love him.
  20. One of the great ironies of this is that we would have our two best hitters in the two position roles that are historically filled by poor batters. What kind of team anxiously awaits their C or 2B to arrive at the plate? Alas, has it come to this?
  21. Awesome. Thanks for sharing that!
  22. Not trying to say it was awful. Certainly not what Sano or Buxton did when they advanced, But few do such things. Eddie will need to start in AA and show he can hit well at that level before moving on. Man, I hope you're right.
  23. Leadership is a funny thing. In 1987 Hrbek and Gaetti were the most vocal (boisterous?), Puckett was the one who would probably wind up in the Hall of Fame, and Blyleven was never shy about how good he thought he was. They had a guy come in to play left field and bat lead-off. His stats weren't that good. And yet, he was an important spark. I've heard many who believe he is the one who caused the team to play better and better as time went on. Dan Gladden's OPS+ in 1987 was 76, and yet he was a catalyst. It takes all kinds.
  24. Hmmm... It is difficult for me to imagine a guy coming from Japan who wants to play for the Minnesota Twins rather than the New York Yankees. That is a brand name they got in NYC, and every baseball fan in Japan knows of them.
  25. Now if the guy will actually use the ladder. And not too sparingly. Wouldn't it be fun if he became an expert on ladders? Used them wisely and aggressively? That would be some guy.
