Although it was a long time ago that I made the move from Madison to the Twin Cities, will always be a Badger at heart. I knew almost nothing about any of the young men in this year's draft. But when I saw they had taken Carpenter in the eleventh round out of Madison Tech, I was excited. And after reading a bit about his performance there, change that to elated! Will second Doc's comment above about being most interested in the two young pitchers, Hill and Carpenter. Will also agree with the above comment about how exciting it would be to have Carpenter and Prielipp both in the starting rotation three or four years from now. I see that everyone has signed except the #1 guy and two younger pitchers taken late on Day 3. Were both of those younger guys that would require more than $150k to sign? Expect they are waiting to see if the #1 pick signs for under slot. They would then have some money to sign either/both of the remaining pitchers for an over slot bonus. Does anyone know if that is what's happening?

Randy Dobnak Has Earned His Way Back
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Wouldn't that be something if Dobber would make it back to the Twins. I know nothing about his injury, other than it was something very unusual. Seems like he has put that behind him and learned how to pitch with whatever is different post injury. Is it possible his future is as a long reliever? You know, 7th guy in the bullpen pecking order. If so, he would be a relatively inexpensive arm in the pen going forward.- 65 replies

Great seeing Raya go five innings on just 60 pitches. Guessing that is his current limit? Was that his best start in his pro career? Also saw that Keaschall was at first base again. Has been there a lot of late. Checked the Saints box score and saw that Justin Topa had a scoreless inning of relief (1 walk and 1 K). Should be ready to join the Twins in a week or ten days. Gonna be interesting seeing who gets moved out when Topa comes up. Likewise will be interesting seeing what moves they make when Miranda returns today and Correa a bit later.

With all the above talk about trading Dobber, I was wondering if he has pitched himself into the conversation of a return to the Twins later this year? He was a solid starter before the finger injury. Is it possible he has finally put the injury behind him and learned how to pitch without whatever limitations remain from that injury?

Although not an option this year, there have been frequent sightings of Keaschall at first base over the past few weeks. May be a good option to platoon beginning next year.

That seems to be what everyone is thinking. Appears that adding $$$ is a problem, so the rental seems most likely. But what about giving up more, say including one of the two with another decent asset(s), to bring in a young starter. Someone like what Ryan was when we got him. Or maybe what Lopez was a year before we got him. Getting a good young arm sure fits the payroll restraints, both this year and next.

I keep getting that nagging feeling that one of Martin or Julien won't be a Twin come next Thursday.

Elated to see that they have most of the recent draft picks signed, Seth. Was concerned that they would be able to sign the high school kid from Texas and the lefty from Madison Tech. I know nothing about any of these kids other than what I have read here. But those two young kids were the most interesting to me. Another great night from Jenkins. Took a look at his splits and saw that after a slow/late start he is tearing the cover off the ball in July. Do you see him moving up to Iowa in the near future? Gonna be interesting to see the moves the Twins make over the next few weeks. Both in getting the injured guys back and whether or not they make a deal for another starting pitcher. Won't hold my breath cause five days is a bit long. But maybe they will come thru with a pleasant surprise. As for trading for another reliever, don't know if that is a big need with Stewart back yesterday and Topa starting his rehab stint. Maybe a lefty to replace Okert who scares me every time out.

Interesting seeing Keaschall at first base. Has been there several times of late. Looks like Zebby dealt with some early butterflies, then settled in nicely. Was thinking of former Twins starters who came straight from AA to the show. Was it Radke? Maybe Kyle Lohse? Can't remember, but I know there were a couple good ones. With yesterday behind him, Zebby has some time at AAA. Guess the TBA can't be Zebby because they need him on Wednesday. With Funderburk on the IL, assume that Stewart will be with the Twins tonight. After another game getting on base four times, checked Jenkins' numbers. Kid has 33 walks compared with 18 strikeouts. Does anyone know, at low A ball pitchers pitching around him?

I am a believer that pitching is the most important part of baseball. So I am of the opinion that the most important aspect of yesterday's games was the two innings Prielipp pitched. If memory serves many thought he was a steal when the Twins drafted him 48th overall what was it, two years ago? Didn't he drop, Seth, because he was injured in college and had pitched very little? After being drafted he pitched the grand total of 6 innings early last year before going on the shelf with another injury. So his first appearance in the FCL a week ago was kind of like his professional debut. The result, three K's in one clean inning. Last night, he moves up to low-A ball and K's 3 in two innings with a single being the only baserunner. How far do the Twins stretch him out over the next two months? Does he move up to Cedar Rapids. As he goes longer into games and moves up, will this level of success continue? Don't know those answers, but he just might be that stud lefty the Twins haven't had since Liriano. Guess only time will tell. And if he is, when will he arrive at Target Field? Those pictures of Jenkins' at bat were fantastic. Did anyone else notice that on the close-up none of the three people in the stands were watching the game?

Twins Minor League Report (7/19): Yes, Sir! Yasser's Back!!
roger replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Great seeing another MiLB report, Seth. It's good having baseball back. Curious, Jenkins didn't play after their layoff. Is he still battling an injury? Or are they being careful and giving him lots of off days? Was impressed by MacLeod's outing. Was he the guy the Twins drafted several years ago out of one of the Mississippi schools who was injured and didn't pitch for a couple years? I recall that pick was supposed to be a stud who fell to them because of the injury history. Also great seeing Stewart have a solid outing. Any word on his velocity? Twins could really use him to make a solid pen a very good one. Will be curious seeing who goes down/or/out when he is ready next week?- 22 replies

Like past years, I know nothing about these guys. But I also haven't read anything here and elsewhere that gets me excited. Knowing nothing is similar to previous years. But I sure could get excited about everything I read about Lee two years ago. Same last year with Jenkins. And when I read about what Keaschall had done at ASU and previously, took a liking to that guy. Throw in the Soto pick and last year generated some excitement. Nothing I see this year is cause for me to get excited. Hopefully, one of these guys will be the second coming of Tony Gwynn to Jason Verlander. But that ain't likely, is it? Heck, maybe the excitement will come from a couple of pitchers taken later today. Kind of like what was it, three or four years ago with those guys from Nebraska and Michigan? Hopefully, this time they will hang on to them.

Minor League Report (7/14): Avert Your Eyes
roger replied to Matt Braun's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Good news is that Jenkins numbers are steadily moving up. Great seeing very few K’s with more extra base hits of late. Will he improve enough to get the call to Cedar Rapids next month?- 4 replies

Add me to the list of those who are ecstatic seeing Prielipp back on a mound and blown away by the results. OK, it's only the complex league, but for practical purposes this was his professional debut. Now, they need to get Canterino back so he can help the Twins in 2025. Both Festa and Varland were counted on to help the Twins this year. Looks like that ain't happening. Makes SWR's year all the more important.

Appreciate your report as I hadn't seen a lot about his play other than the daily box scores. Really appreciate it. What impressed me the most was the number 13. 13 K's compared to 17 walks for a kid a year out of high school is flat out unbelievable.

Twins Minor League Report (7/9): Matthews Meets His Match
roger replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Great seeing Stewart back on a mound. Timing seems to be lining up with his return to the Twins right after the break. With Thielbar returning to what he was in previous years and a healthy Stewart, their bullpen should be SIX deep at the back end...Stewart, Thielbar, Staumont, Alcala, Jax and Duran. Should be a huge help the last two months of the season. Add me to those who continue to be impressed with Keaschall. With Lee looking like the real deal with second base being his most likely home and Keaschall a year or so away, Julien is looking like the odd man out. Maybe he becomes a platoon partner with Miranda at first? But it seems more likely to me that when/if he can get his bat going his biggest value to the Twins may be as part of a deal for pitching. Doubt that happens this month, more likely during the off-season. Twins traded a starting second baseman two years ago, another last year. Could Julien be a third former starting second baseman to depart next winter? Saw that Jenkins was out again yesterday. Expect they are being ultra careful with his injury.- 29 replies

The box score link goes to an earlier game. Question. Why were all the other minor league teams not playing Sunday? Are they all having their all-star breaks?

Read something interesting in the Strib related to pinch hitting for Miranda. First, Rocco was managing as if the game was lost thru much of the game. Otherwise he would have had a quicker hook for Pablo in the 6th and would not have brought Winder out for a second inning. After Twins pitchers hit three Houston batters, Rocci likely envisioned Miranda coming to the plate and getting blasted by a hard inside fastball. With him thinking the game was lost, i can understand getting Martin an at bat. The pitching decisions aren't understandable.

Every morning with my coffee I always check the league's box scores to see how former Twins are doing. You know, guys like Kyle Gibson, Sonny Gray, Berrios, Rogers and Eddie Rosario. Hadn't seen Eddie's name in the Washington lineup the last few days. Thanks for the heads up as you answered my question and I now know he is with Gwinnett after being released by the Nationals. Great seeing Jenkins playing more regularly. Checked his stats. Interesting, very interesting. In 110 at bats he has 23 walks and only 15 strikeouts. That's amazing, at least in my opinion. This isn't about the minor leagues, but Margot's defense has been terrible Weren't we told when they traded for him that he was a top notch defensive outfielder? Well it wasn't just his mistake(s) last night. This guy has been brutal in the outfield much of this season. I think when Royce returns, the Twins need to move Lee to second and get Castro back into his utility role with Royce replacing Margot.

Twins Minor League Report (7/4): Fireworks on the Fourth
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Strib said this morning that Festa was going back to St. Paul today. Didn't have an answer on the other half of that move, but indicated that Paddack would be eligible to come off the IL on Monday when his next turn in the rotation comes around.- 23 replies
