  1. We will all know what they do with Stashak over the next few weeks. Is he on the bubble, I would guess yes. I disagree with one of the assumptions you are making, Cody, regarding Enlow. I don't see his move to the bullpen in mid-August as a sign that it was a decision about his future. I see it as someone coming back from TJ and they were limiting his innings pitched in 2022. It is possible they were deciding whether he made three more starts of 12-15 innings, or kept pitching for the remainder of the year out of the bullpen getting the same 15 innings. They chose the bullpen. Doesn't mean he isn't penciled into their plans for 2023 as a starting pitcher at level X? What that means about his 40-man roster status, I don't have a clue. His numbers for this year are meaningless to me. The important fact is that he was on the mound pitching and finished the season without any additional injury.
  2. Thanks for posing the question, Nick. Gonna be interesting seeing what the Twins do. The Twins appear to be loaded at shortstop down on the farm. Lewis is likely a future star, although he won't be back from his injury until mid-season at the earliest. Martin is resurrecting his top prospect status in the AFL, although most assume he isn't strong enough defensively to be an option at short. Lee probably can man short and is rocketing up the ladder. Like Lewis, however, it is unlikely he would be ready for the 'show' until mid or late summer at the earliest. Then there is the Miller kid. It appears the organization really likes him, but he is at least three years away. Ton of depth in the minors, but no one will be ready for opening day. What they do will be the $64,000 question. Or is it a $35M question? Any thought that they would let Palacios man the position until Lewis is ready was answered last week when he was released. One thing I will be watching come spring is which team Martin and Lee are on and what position each is playing.
  3. So exciting seeing Martin playing like the prospect we all hope he is. With this type of performance, makes one wonder if an injury caused his disappointing season at Wichita? Add me to the list of those disappointed that Julien isn't seeing a bit more action. When he plays, he seems to be performing exactly as he has done for much of his career. I guess we will have to wait a year or so to see if he really has a future with the Twins.
  4. Great comment tarheel. In a mid-market, we need to have some reason to be involved in the team. Some excitement that gets us to the sofa to watch on tv and sometimes down to Target Field. To me that means that during say a ten year period each of those years brings us some reason to watch. That may be having exciting young prospects during a brief rebuild, be that a couple years or longer. There also needs to be several years that they compete for the playoffs with maybe three or four years getting into the playoffs. And yes, there needs to be at least one year where they compete for and play in the World Series. Unfortunately, this past year didn't fit into that plan. Maybe we could have called it a rebuild, but the FO didn't manage it that way. If they had, they would have traded for prospects rather than help at the deadline. On the other hand, I don't know how any year with the number of injuries fits into this plan.
  5. Be very careful when bring Mr. Lombardi into any discussion here. To some of us, and certainly those of us who were kids living in the Fox Valley back in the 50's and 60's, he is God. One of his favorite lines was 'show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser.' Don't know if that is applicable to this discussion today, but might be.
  6. If my son's Legion team played like many of the Twins this year, a lot of players would have been riding the pine. As for the front office and coaching staff, if I owned the team I would make a lot of changes. On the other hand, if I owned the team I would probably have a couple billion dollars from what my main job is and wouldn't give a hoot. Note: I don't know the Pohlad kids and do not know their level of interest/involvement in what the Twins are doing on the field.
  7. Didn't say he was as good as Rod Carew. Said many compare him to Carew. My memory isn't always 100% anymore, but didn't Carew himself make that comparison? In my opinion, there is no comparison between Arraez and Gordon. Yes, Gordon is faster and more versatile defensively. Personally see Arraez as improving defensively this year by playing only two positions. Also believe that what Arraez did this year will be repeated year after year. Not all that certain that Gordon just may have had a career year. Will be interesting to see how he does in 2023. Hopefully, he will repeat and who knows...he may be their starting shortstop.
  8. Great article, thanks. Also great comments. Agree that Ryan and Duran are two candidates, although I would wait until next offseason. Same for Miranda, Larnach and Kirilloff. The one player I would love to see them sign to a five year deal, plus a couple option years, is Arraez. Come on front office, get it done before Christmas.
  9. Thanks for this information, Seth. I can't believe that Javier is only 24. Seems like we have been waiting for him to turn that corner for a long, long time. Doubt that he will ever make it, but after all these years would be a bloody shame to let him go and turn into an all-star for somebody else. The one that is an absolute must to resign is the catcher. That's one position the front office needs to work on real hard this winter. As I see it, they need at a minimum three new catchers. One, someone to play at least half the games for the Twins. Two, someone like Leon, a veteran who will sign a minor league deal to play at St. Paul where he will help their young pitchers develop and be available as a backup when one of the Twins two goes down. Three, a good young prospect who is close. You know, someone like Rortvedt was when traded...less the injury.
  10. The Twins don't have to wait until the end of the series to sign one of their own free agents, do they? I thought they could negotiate and sign their own guys during this period. As for signing Sanchez, I was really hoping they could get someone who is better defensively. And you are right, there isn't much in the pipeline for backups.
  11. Palacios is no longer an option. Twins announced earlier today he was claimed by Detroit.
  12. Cave was claimed earlier today by Baltimore. He is no longer a member of the Twins organization. Also gone to Detroit today is Palacios. Hamilton is the third. Player to be claimed and gone.
  13. Thanks for getting us these reports, Steve. Love following our kids playing in the AFL. Could Austin Martin repeat what Royce Lewis did in the AFL however many years ago? Can he get back on track as a TOP Prospect?
  14. Might have waited another day for this, John. Then we would know if Correa opted out or not. His decision is due today, isn't it? Or is it five days after the end of the World Series? Assuming he does opt out, I expect the Twins will spend less next year than in 2022. I also believe they can be a better team at that lower payroll. But being better will depend on improved health moreso than spending more dollars. It really can't be worse, can it? With Correa, Sano, Sanchez, Bundy, Fulmer and Archer all gone, the Twins will have in excess of $60M to spend. Two biggest needs for me are a real catcher and late inning reliever to replace Fulmer. They will also need to cover shortstop the first couple months of the season until Lewis or maybe Lee fill the spot. But that isn't going to be a high priced veteran, heck, could even be Palacios if they liked his last week of the season. I see their starting rotation being pitchers who all were in the organization last year. Yes, they may sign one older reclamation project, but I believe the five starters opening day will be, in some order, Gray, Mahle, Maeda, Ryan and Ober. With Varland and SWR showing promise the last couple weeks, that staff should be very good. Some of the $60M will be going to raises/extensions to several players, including Arraez and at least one of the three veteran starters. But a catcher, late inning reliever and +/- $5M to Arraez/1 pitcher ain't gonna add up to $60M. If the 2022 payroll was $140M or so, I see 2023 being down or even under $120M. And who knows, that team just might be a lot better than last year.
  15. Sad end to what could have been. The next 30+ days should be interesting. I believe the Twins currently have 52 players on their 40-man roster. So 12 need to go to get to 40. Then at least another 7 to get 5 spots for prospects plus spots for 1 top reliever and a catcher. Gonna be really interesting to see who the last of those 19 cuts are!
  16. Where does he play? Certainly shouldn't be in the outfield. And if he is at DH, who sits that day? Arraez? Miranda? Urshela? Gordon? Makes the decision easy for me.
  17. Although I am very optimistic that SWR can be special, my nod goes to Varland. Kid has done so well in the handful of starts he made this season. Believe both will begin 2023 in St. Paul and will be first up to join the Twins mid-season as starters are needed. See the 2023 starting rotation as Gray, Mahle, Maeda, Ryan and Ober, not necessarily in that order. How well each of the older starters pitches combined with how well Varland and SWR pitch will dictate whether or not the Twins extend any/all of the three veterans next spring/summer.
  18. Correct me if I am wrong, but during the five days following the season that Correa will decide whether or not he is opting out, the Twins are the only team he can negotiate with. Correct? Thus, I expect the Twins will, or will not, work to get him signed to whatever extension makes sense to the Twins and Carlos. If they don't get him signed, he will opt out and following the World Series a month or so later will become a free agent. Although anything is possible, if they don't get him signed in the next week I don't see him returning to Minnesota.
  19. Great summary, Nick, thanks. Wanted to comment on Kirilloff, especially after the deluge of comments several days ago about the chance that his career is over. Heard something on the telecast this weekend, at least I think it was tv and not the radio, about his surgery. Most of us are not aware of anyone who had this type of surgery, thus the speculation that his career is over. What was said, however, is that Kirk Gibson had a similar surgery early in his career back when he was playing. If that is accurate, he is one example of a player who followed his surgery with an excellent career.
  20. Really liked what I saw while watching a lot of MiLB games a year ago. Saw most/all of his starts when he had that 25 or 30 inning stretch of shutout ball. Also saw a few games after that when he wasn't as good. Seems like a hard kid to figure out. He can be lights out for a game or two or month, then really stink it up for awhile. Gotta believe the Twins remain high on him, especially seeing he had several solid outings in September. What does the future hold? Only Balazovic knows.
  21. Great comment, bighat. But I have a question, is there a Dior store in the Twin Cities?
  22. I continue to be amazed when I read comments suggesting the Twins trade Arraez. He is the best hitter the Twins have had since Joe Mauer. Many from the organization compare him to Carew. A generational talent, yet move him out for a catcher, or whomever.
  23. I believe he is out of options, so unless it is a rehab assignment, he ain’t going to AAA. Found it interesting that the three players with the lowest WPA didn’t include Gordon, yet his error lost the game. Guess another reason to question that stats validity.
  24. I see too many comments declaring the likelihood that AK may never play again. It is true that his surgery isn’t common for baseball players. But that doesn’t mean it can’t work. Don’t know how many doctors we have here today, but maybe one can offer some insight. The truth is WE don’t know anything about this surgery. But we aren’t the patient or the Twins. what is fact is that many people believed AK to be one of the best hitters in all of the minor leagues before his injury. Didn’t he have the second best stats to that superstar now playing for Toronto? So what we do know is this kid was a very special talent. I am willing to wait until spring training when we will know how he is doing before declaring his career is over.
