    Great reports, TNT. You're absolutely right about Buxton, he will change the Twins OF defensive expectations, practically overnight, and I would expect him to be considered among the elite defensive CF within a few months of his major league debut. After reading your accounts, I'm even more looking forward to seeing the Lookouts in action next weekend.

    Great read, Mat. I have some questions if you have the time. Out of curiosity, what's in your own pitch repertoire (4-seam/2-seam FB, off-speed stuff)? What goals have you and pitching coach Henry Bonilla set for 2015 @ CR, in terms of each of your pitches, ball/strike ratios, innings pitched, other peripherals, etc.? What is/are the basic difference(s) between college and professional ball? What is/are the basic difference(s) between the two Rookie Leagues and A ball?

    Did you really have to struggle for good/iconic musicians from Michigan? Besides the entire stable-full of talent from the golden age of Motown... you have, to name but a few... Betty Carter George Winston Ted Nugent Bill Haley Alice Cooper Iggy Pop Noel "Paul" Stookey and one of the most unappreciated, proto-punk garage rockers- Rob Tyner and MC5- who gained legendary status in the late 60s with "Kick out the Jams"

    The .659 OPS and 7th place in the MWL is accurate, and obviously, not a good number. Among all 30 Class A teams in two leagues, the Twins OPS ranks 17th. http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=l_tba&lid=118 http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=l_tba&lid=116 The fact is, there hasn't been "a consistent balance" in the top rounds- the Twins have recognized a deficiency in their pitching/catching depth, and have emphasized gathering more quality arms than bats over the last 3 drafts, and they have particularly been trying to find inefficiencies in hard-throwing college RPs. 2014- Pitchers- 9 of the first 13 2013- Pitchers- 12 of first 19 (+ 3 Catchers = 15/19) 2012- Pitchers- 13 of first 18 (+ 1 Catcher = 14/18) Don't know why you choose to turn this into a debunking contest, since we are essentially in agreement. The fact remains, my first premise is still accurate, many more pitchers/catchers in the early rounds, which means there is left a big offensive hole in the Ft Myers class, and a lesser, but still significant one at Cedar Rapids. The best hope for current prospect offensive potential largely lies in Chattanooga- if the current crop there would continue to disappoint at their current level of futility- the Twins would obviously need to look further for more offensive production down the road; they will likely need to wisely develop and deal from the pitching prospect talent surplus- if there ends up being one.

    Cedar Rapids is currently OPSing @ .659, which is 7th in the Midwest League. Beyond Gordon and possibly Fernandez and the Zachs, I'm hard-pressed to find many potential major league hitters there, but I would defer to Jim Crikket on that front.

    Yep, the franchise has pretty much most of their offensive prospect eggs in that one Lookout basket. Especially considering the offensive black hole in the next class coming after them at Ft Myers. With all of those relief pitchers drafted recently with the top picks, the Miracle are in last place in the FSL in BA (.216) and OPS (.589) and the Kernels are only doing a little better than that.

    OPS is now .865. Encouragingly, the two doubles and the BB were against RHP (but less encouraging when looking at the bigger picture, going into today, his OPS vs. RHP was still only a paltry .567 in 27 PAs.... while his splits in Rochester and New Britain in 2014 were nearly identical). All that said, it seems clear if Hicks could maintain something close to this production level, he will be called up sooner rather than later, likely in favor of Schafer. But I've yet to be presented with evidence that Hicks has made the case that he would be a significant defensive upgrade.

    Acquiring Scott Van Slyke (in LF) and/or Peter Bourjos (first CF, then 4th OF) wouldn't block anyone. (Arcia can either DH or go to RF, with Hunter going to DH in the first scenario, one and/or both of the current CFers would be DFA'd in the second scenario) Picking up a legit CF defender via waiver claim wouldn't block anyone. And HIcks is not a good CF defender, period (with the poor routes and reads he takes, I'm not certain if he is a defensive upgrade over the current CFers).

    Actually, Meyer only tied his career-high single-game strikeout number of 11 batters. This was the 4th time he's reached 11 K in his career. A year ago at this time, he had back-to-back 11 K games, on 4-23 and 4-28.... and once in 2012 in A ball. Hopefully, this was a big personal victory for Meyer, in terms of overcoming his early wildness and then "flipping the switch". Over his last four innings, his strike rate was a much-improved 60.5%.

    So, my conclusion after reading this piece? As of April 22, the Twins have a handful of nuthin' in terms of quick-fix options. How about a trade? The teams with excess OFers in the offseason still have them. The Dodgers 5th OFer, Scott Van Slyke, would be an immediate huge upgrade in LF, plus he can play the other two OF positions acceptably. 5 years of team control, but he also could be a relatively valuable trade chip once Buxton and Rosario are ready. How about a waiver claim? Gary Brown, former 2010 1st round draft pick and 2012 top-rated prospect for the Giants, who was just DFAd by the Cardinals. Hasn't proven he can hit MLB pitching at all, but he's only 26, super-fast, and a true plus-defensive CF.

    I still think it's going to be Berriios @ #1..... but Gonsalves should be a very strong co-2nd pick along with Hu.

    Well said. And mini-McCoy kudos to the mucho-maligned Blaine Boyer. I doubt he has many fans in Minnesota, but on a human level you had to feel for him finally coming through.
