  1. Thanks, Seth. As I suspected, Farris has to work pretty hard over 10-11 months for not much money. In regards to utility options, I was thinking primarily of where Farris fits into their thinking relative to Nunez, Schafer, Robinson at the major league level (presumably all of these guys are theoretically with trade value under the right conditions)/ Ortiz, Bernier, Beresford at Rochester. I'm working under the assumption that they don't want any of Arcia, Rosario or Hicks in part-time roles. Assuming Farris only has the chops for 2B, CF and LF, his chances of sticking as a utility guy are lessened quite a bit, but it looks like he wouldn't embarrass the team in an emergency situation at one of those positions.
  2. Great article, Seth. In following the winter leagues online, Farris was a mainstay for his club, batting high in the order, and playing in some 77 games and getting around 300 PAs. With the 133 games played in Rochester, there must be an element of exhaustion to go along with his obvious love of the game. Questions- 1) How do the Twins rate his glove as a potential all-around utility guy (both IF/OF)? 2) How confident would the Twins be in trading/cutting their excess IF/OF utility depth, both major and minor league, if Farris were the OF alternative? 3) About how much money did he make in the Mexican League? 4) About how much money did he make playing in Rochester?
  3. Ryan didn't concur in public, but it seems rather unlikely that Molitor's first big decision didn't have tacit approval from Ryan. This was reported just yesterday:
  4. The only way that will happen is if Hicks craps out again, and/or injuries are incurred by the remaining CF filler players. Molitor would not have early and publicly made Santana the SS if Ryan didn't concur with that decision. The OF defense projects to be suspect already, I can't believe they'd really want to revisit the 2014 experience again.
  5. Well, OK then... with these numbers, why weren't there 30 teams knocking down his door? We all know the answer. Looking at the bottom of the Fangraphs RP for least K/9-rate list, here are some birds of a feather: 28 Jared Burton Twins 6.47 29 Blaine Boyer Padres 6.47 30 Caleb Thielbar Twins 6.61 Welcome home, Blaine! But then again, Ryan seems to come up with one of these reclamation RPs each year. I predicted he'd be gone by March 31, now it looks like he's got a good chance to make the club. Even with better control than Burton, I still don't see how he's going to be an improvement over, or even match what Burton did. (While Burton was even in low leverage IP and med/hi leverage IP, the vast majority of Boyer's innings pitched was in low leverage situations)
  6. I too hope this is not the case, but fear the worst.
  7. The fact is, it's a Hobson's Choice, no matter which direction the Twins choose to take. I can see the logic of going with the two veterans for 30-60 days (and the likely below league-average offensive performance) to see if a stint in AAA helps Hicks improve from both sides of the plate. At this point, however, we have two years worth of major league data, that Hicks, at best, projects as a platoon OFer. And based on the latest quotes, the Twins don't want to go the platoon route if they don't have to do so. Which leaves... what?
  8. I dunno, Hicks continues to do some pretty stupid things himself.
  9. I guess I missed something..... Do "Baseball's Unwritten Rules" for retaliatory violence extend to Spring Training, too?
  10. Ditto on OF reps for Plouffe, with Esco in need of playing time, plus the offensive drop-off if Arcia or Hunter are out of the lineup, it is indeed a head-scratcher why Plouffe wouldn't be getting some reps in both RF and LF. Regarding Mauer, he has missed extended amounts of time in 3 of the last 4 years, the Twins have to plan accordingly on the assumption that that trend is likely to continue as he ages. DHing at least once a week to keep him from breaking down physically seems like one strategy they might pursue. Arcia is another guy they might forsee having to give extra DH PAs to, if his glove proves problematic.
  11. Plouffe has always been "Mr Inevitable" as a Super-Utility guy. But getting Plouffe some 1stB time is interesting. The Twins already have some "versatility" at the position with Mauer, Vargas and Hermann as depth possibilities. Plouffe at 1st does make it plausible for Escobar to then get 35-45 starts at 3rd (and maybe Sano later on?). And given Mauer's injury history, there's a good chance his DH starts will rise by necessity. We all know that as Hunter turns 40, coupled with question marks about his defense, he might require at least 40 DH starts just to keep his legs fresh as well as try to earn back some of the $10.5M contract with some offensive production from him.
  12. This is a plausible possibility, except that it's just as easy to surmise a roster where Mauer, Hunter and Arcia get the bulk of the DH starts.
  13. I don't know about Pinto, but that's something that the coaching staff should have addressed with him both before and during the game. Each incident looked about the same, Pinto was prone and appeared to have no clue what was coming- as a viewer, all one could say is "Ouch!"
  14. Gibson did well last spring, but it wasn't like any of the veterans he was pitted against showed anything suggesting that they deserved the spot over him. It's a lot closer call this year.
  15. By committee? May as well raise the average age of a "rebuilding" team- with another space made available for a veteran, yet again.
  16. You summed things up nicely. I didn't think this was really going to be a possible scenario back in December. I was fairly certain at the time they were inked, that Robinson and Boyer were actually good insurance Plan B/C options who would either opt out or slip through waivers to Rochester. I should have known better when they brought back practically everybody eligible for arbitration.
  17. Just to add to your list and since he's been discussed today, Randy Johnson was 4.9 BB/9 in AAA, 8.1 BB/9 in AA.
  18. I agree about T-Bar, he has an option left. But who would be the LHP that displaces him? With their love of signing bargain bin vets, I still think Boyer might displace someone.
  19. Curt- Check out Nick's latest article. The Twins have seemingly moved on from the issue being strictly a matter of "consistency". Molitor, perhaps somewhat impressed with Berrios' ST performance and all-around presence, called out Meyer a little bit, and challenged him to put on his Big Boy Boots. Let's see if Meyer responds to the challenge. I still fear that he'll still have to somehow pass both Pelfrey and May on the depth chart to get a May 15 shot.
  20. I know, of course, of whom your speak. The Twins won't go near putting someone out with those potential numbers, because of the BB/9 and K/BB.
  21. 2014 Opening Day pitching staff average age: 29.75 2015 Opening Day pitching staff average age (Seth's prediction):: 29.83 (If Boyer sneaks in, that should put the average over 30. JR Graham, at 25, looks like the only rookie-infusion according to Seth... Would it be all that surprising if the Twins make a trade with the Braves in order to keep and then send Graham to AAA?)
  22. This. I held out some hope in my early forecast that the "new-look" Twins were going to break the recent same-old-same-old mold with Molly. You said it, it is mind-boggling that the reality appears to be that at least one projected 2015 opening day lineup is somehow going to be nearly the same average age as the 2014 opening day team... and that's with including Santana, Vargas and Arcia in the lineup, and with Hughes starting instead of Nolasco. (Last year, opening day average age was 29.3, this year, with Schafer in CF, the average would be 28.5).
  23. Team SIERA and xFIP were 29 and I was just throwing the whole mess into the pile (I corrected on stating it was FIP). No doubt, lots of work to do, starters, pen and defense. And very likely, the worst staff in the ALC in 2015.
