Article: Twins Say Now Is Not The Time For Trevor May
jokin replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Everyone has acknowledged that Gibson was a special case, and having to go back in time to find exceptions to the current situation only makes the current situation more stark in its comparative inepitude. -

No. The Twins moved too slowly with him... with respect to moving him back down to AA/AAA after his first 50 PAs in 2013. Leaving him hanging out to dry in a major league starting lineup when he clearly didn't belong bordered on cruel and unusual punishment. He's never recovered. The point being, it's an inexact science to know exactly who is and isn't "ready". Only one way to find out for sure. -

Santana only came up out of sheer desperation from multiple major-mis-assessments of personnel- in his 7th year with the club. Gibson- TJ issues early on, but should have come up in 2013 before the "PJ, Cole and Pedro" show lingered into summer- he was clearly the best SP all year in Roc. (Albers notwithstanding). Vargas also could have been called up in May 2014 when there was roster room and need for a bat- in his 6th year with the club. Hicks was also promoted in his 6th year with the club. -

I agree that this one comes down to the "cure being worse than the disease". But isn't there possibly another aspect to this move that you didn't address- on the defensive side? Could it be that the Twins, who were somewhat in denial on the dreadful OF defense situation on the day of the Hunter signing, came to realize in ST, that viewed in whole, that no net defensive upgrade from 2014 had been achieved-- and maybe resultantly, Hicks simply wasn't up to the task of the critical job of manning CF with major defensive red flags Arcia and Hunter flanking him?- 39 replies

There actually was a bigger dilemma than who plays in CF- and that's the overall OF defense. By all accounts, (as expected), Arcia has struggled in his transition to LF, and Torii is soon 40. Shane Robinson isn't much of a major league hitter, but there's no question that he is a major league outfielder. Hicks is still a work in progress and didn't rise to the opportunity right in front of him this spring- for now, he should still be playing every day in AAA, if at the very worst, only to preserve whatever perceived value he still retains.- 71 replies

I'm guessing you're trying to indict me for something that I never said, but you conveniently omitted the entire context of my post, which put the stats into proper perspective. I'm not a fan at all of ST stats, but Molitor's defense of the "Milone Minimalization" decision was simply ludicrous, and both conveniently and plenty refutable in three little stat lines.- 71 replies

Well, he's currently listed on the Red Wings roster, but he hasn't really mastered AA pitching yet. And Chattanooga is still short an OF, depending on if/when Walker and Harrison are moved up. And they may want him to take significant CF reps, which won't as likely happen with Buxton in AA. So, it seems a slight edge towards him heading to Rochester to start out.- 71 replies

If it's "minimization" as the quality we're looking for, I've got other guys who demonstrated that "battling" skill more markedly, including one with the best "minimizing"-related skill: Milone 14 IP H/9 9.6 WHIP 1.357 ERA 4.50 K/9 5.1 Earned Runs 7 Pelfrey 13.2 IP H/9 9.9 WHIP 1.244 ERA 1.32 K/9 4.6 Ernd. Runs 2 Meyer 5.2 IP H/9 6.4 WHIP 1.946 ERA 1.59 K/9 9.5 Earned Runs 1 Now, can the "staff" seriously say they were more impressed by "damage minimization" by Milone than the other two?- 71 replies

Based on Molitor acknowledging that Hunter is going to need time off, perhaps the Twins should be/are seeking a 5th OF with a little pop? It would sure be nice to have all three OF positions potentially covered by stronger defenders at times (and actual OFers, not fish-out-of-water shortstops), particularly in late-inning situations, and with Escobar now the utility guy, Nunez being on the team is superfluous (and he very well might pass through waivers if timed right).- 71 replies

It all looks good on paper, but Stuaffer pitched a majority of his innings in low leverage situations, at the extreme pitcher-friendly Petco Park. I hope for the best, but really, not expecting a whole lot more from Stauffer over Burton last year is probably the right stance to take.

How long have you got? With the slight exception of Ervin Santana, they seem locked into the same bad habits of roster management- bringing in- and even extending- lesser recycled veterans, bringing up layers of even lesser recycled "prospects", along with signing some familiar Twins names from the past- hoping for a little "Twins Way" magic to effervesce upon the rest of the squad and somehow make all of the 90+ loss seasons go away.

And that is the sad point- it's just about impossible/ and actually a contradiction in terms- you can't be a rebuilding team with the expectation of putting your most competitive feet forward. The "short-run" should be completely irrelevant or you just end up extending the "long run" quest to relevance. And really, they've been going just about "all-in" with a lot of substandard major league and AAAA journeyman and cut-rate veterans the last three years, and they've always reached their full potential of "crash and burn."

I'll be anxious to hear your report- increased velocity, types of pitches thrown, etc. Since the announcement was made that he was out of the running for the 5th spot, he's done well in two short relief appearances.

Welcome to the dark side, Seth. I've been saying since the season ended in 2014, that there have to be upgrades considered for at least half of just about the worst pen in baseball. Caleb has been a great story, but he was at the top of the list (behind Burton) of guys with targets on their foreheads- not improving year over year, plus not really providing enough lefty/righty advantages, and even further confirmed with a lackluster ST so far.

According to Gameday, it was a lot worse than that for T-Bar, he's recorded as having given up 3 hits and a BB in one inning pitched. I don't know how hard he was hit, but it could be one more nail in the coffin for Caleb. Plus, he has two options remaining, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if he goes back to Rochester. I still say that they will make a trade with Atlanta to enable them to move Graham down, as well. "More veterans!"

This is correct. Unless Hunter pulled a Jose Canseco and the ball bounced off his helmet over the fence, he' off the hook. -
