The Twins finally made a significant addition to their pitching staff, acquiring RHP Sonny Gray from Cincinatti. Gray’s contract extends through 2023 (assuming the Twins pick up his 2023 team option).
Sonny Gray was not cheap as the Twins gave up first-round pick RHP Chase Petty from last year’s draft.
The topic of this thread? Grade the trade!
Interesting. Gray is a proven, quality starter. He only has two years of team control, though. If the Twins are hoping to compete in 2023 and take the team option for 2023 then I like the trade. Petty is a long way off from the majors (probably 2024 or 2025). However, if they do not plan to compete in 2023 then this trade makes no sense. If they’re trying to compete in 2023, they better commit to it.
Overall, a pleasant surprise.
Jeffers will need to bounce back from a very poor year offensively. When he was playing every day for a while in 2020, he actually looked pretty good. Maybe if he’s the usual starter (and he should be) he may get into more of a rhythm offensively.
I think Henriquez could be a solid contributor in the next couple of years. Not a huge fan of the trade now but if Henriquez develops into a solid starter/reliever I have no problem with it.
Garver and Kiner-Falefa had about the WAR last year. Kiner-Falefa can at least play SS, which is more than I can say about all the other Twins infielders.
Joe Buck is leaving FOX as well and will be the leading commentator for MNF. Now FOX needs both a new #1 play-by-play guy and a #1 color commentator. My guess is they’ll either promote Kevin Burkhardt and Greg Olsen or find two new faces from outside the organization.
I mean relievers are dime-a-dozen, right?
I can’t really argue with this move, as long as his role isn’t too high-leverage. He was solid last year (2.48 ERA, WHIP around 1.1, 4-Seamer up to about 95)
About half of the players you named are still here. In addition, there is now Lewis, Larnach, Martin, SWR, Ryan, Duran, Winder, Petty, Alcala, Jeffers, Winder, Ober, Donaldson, Maeda to name a few that were added by the current regime.
