  1. I think teams are going to be much more wary about offering 1/15 mil deals to guys that they would prefer would "turn it down" I think it balances out in the end.
  2. I saw on TV that Kesler specifically asked to be traded to Anaheim, the Wild may have never had a real shot to bring him in.
  3. Spezza to the stars, Statsny to the Blues, iginlia to the Avs....holy crap this division is going to be amazing to watch overall next year.
  4. Vanek to the Wild 3 years, 6.5 mil a year. What a steal for the Wild, I know many of us were concerned with giving him a 6-7 year deal, but for this amount it is an absolute no brainer, Vanek instantly becomes our best scorer and will put pucks in the net. Also this contract will not prevent us from locking up any of the young studs on this roster: Coyle, Granlund, Coyle etc. The crazy thing is: His contract is only like 5 million more than what Stoner just got from the Ducks! At this point, I would LOVE to see them go all in this year and get Iginlia for a one or two year deal.
  5. I can't see them dealing Plouffe to an in division team. Willingham is a different story since he will be a rental most likely. However I don't think they get much back for Willingham.
  6. The most hilarious part was them asking for Dylan Bundy for Bud Norris. I guess it never hurts to ask? Maybe this is how the Twins got Meyer for Span?
  7. Yeah, I am guessing the Twins were pretty gung ho on fixing the holes this off-season via free agency and holding onto all of their prospects for the rebuild. Also maybe this indicates that they did (and still possibly) view Pinto as the catcher of the future? Castro obviously wouldn't have cost some elite guy like Sano/Buxton/Stewart/Rosario etc, but chances are it would have taken at least one of the top 20 guys.
  8. Florimon has no business being on a major league roster, and honestly once Santana/Escobar/Nunez etc are all healthy/rostered at the same time, Florimon should be taken off the 40 man. Likely this will happen soon enough anyways.
  9. I think last year was a true case of smoke and mirrors the first 80 or so games, there are some large differences this year IMHO and it starts with the rotation. The Twins had nobody close on the roster last year who put up numbers like Hughes and Gibson. Correia was their de-facto ace. The rotation alone is going to keep them from having the "wheels fall off", the bats have been silent as of late, which will surely turn around. Now, does this guarantee they will win a bunch of games and make the playoffs? No, not at all, but I also would be more shocked if they lost 90 games.
  10. Every situation is different. Sano IIRC before the injury was already being talked about by the org to be in the running for the opening day 3rd baseman. I think the Twins have been more than willing to give anyone who has a chance to stick a shot at SS and CF this year, look no further then Santana who only had 100 PA in AAA before he was more or less given the chance to earn (and he did) an every day role. Hicks was another guy given a shot really quickly but unfortunately he feel on his face as many youngsters do. It's baseball, every fan of every team always wants to see the prospects/future get called up ASAP, however I think the Twins by and large have done a pretty good job in how/when they call up guys to the majors. Of course there are exceptions where they kept guys down too long or brought them up to early (hicks) but overall I think they do a good job. Let's also keep in mind that Polanco is only 20 years old at this point and while he has been solid at A+ he hasn't exactly been dominating the level. His .289/.363/.404 is nice and he will move up soon enough, but he isn't putting up 900+ OPS numbers etc
  11. He looked pretty darn raw in the majors defensively, I think he showed some real nice flashes overall for sure, but I think the Twins know what they are doing with him and he will be promoted soon enough. (A lot of promotions usually happen right after the A/AA/AAA all star games for a good number of teams) I give the Twins credit for sticking to their plan and not letting an extreme (but impressive) SSS change their plan of attack on his time line. Keep in mind, once he is in AA (which will be sooner than later) he is really only a true phone call away from the majors.
  12. Joe Mauer: .320/.401/.461/862 133 OPS+ Tony Gwynn: .338/.388/.459 132 OPS+ Kirby Puckett: .318/.360/.477 124 OPS+ Paul Molitor: .305/.369/.448 122 OPS+ Rod Carew: .328/.393/.429 131 OPS+ Derek Jeter: .311/.380/.444 116 OPS+ Johny Bench: .267/.342/.476/.817 126 OPS+ Pete Rose: .303/.375/.409/.784 118 OPS+ Can we please put the notion that Joe Mauer was only a good hitter for a "catcher" to bed? His bat clearly plays anywhere, and at this point he is a sure thing hall of famer as long as he doesn't fall off a cliff.
  13. I think Willingham (as bad as he is defensively at times) is just fine for one of those OF spots, especially since his bat is really really solid. Arcia...man...I wish he would just step up and be more consitent, if he could do that then suddenly all you are looking for is a CF and maybe a part time corner OF to give you better defense and Arcia a rest when he is struggling. CF...I don't know who you target. However I would really really like to look to bring Ichiro in to handle the corner OF spot if Arcia can't hack it for now.
  14. Couple things: I think 51-33 puts them into the playoffs and probably wins them the division. If they go 49-35 they end up with 86 wins, which still maybe puts them in the playoffs. 47-37 puts them at 84 wins which means they were probably "in it" til the end. I think when you look at it like that: It certainly is possible for them to play ten games above .500 from here on out but they need a few things to happen: 1. Hughes/Gibson/Correia need to stay effective like they are now. 2. Nolasco needs to get it together ASAP, reasonable to think this could happen. 3. May needs to come up and at least pitch like an effective #4, I think its reasonable to expect this, of course he could bomb, or he could come on like gangbusters and pitch like a #2. They also need a CF and/or Arcia to step up. If that doesn't happen you gotta look at bringing in another bat around the trade deadline if you are still "in it"
  15. Flip side: if they do win 9 games (and continue to play well after the break) do you look at bringing in another low cost (trade piece wise) bat? Possibly a corner OF or CF bat would be great?
  16. As we all know, the Twins have been...well...inconsistent as of late. So I believe that the Twins absolutely need to turn things around before the all-star break to go in with some sort of momentum to compete the rest of the way. The Twinkies have 14 games before the all-star game and none of them are real easy. 3 at home vs an on fire Royals team, 4 at home against the always hated Yankees, 4 at Seattle who is playing good ball and 3 at the Rockies. I think the Twins need to at the very least go 7-7 over these two weeks, however anything less than 8-6 would be a bit of a disappointment. Here is how I see things shaking out, what say you? 2 out of 3 vs the Royals. 3 out of 4 vs the Yankees (we played them well in NY, now let's dominate them in TF) 2 out of 4 vs the Mariners (vs Felix is a sure loss, hopefully the Twins can win two of the other 3) 1 out of 3 @ the Rockies- I think this staff could be a disaster at Coors Field vs the Rockies lineup. Prediction: 8-6. Hopefully they go 9-5 and get back within 5 or so games of the division.
  17. I land about an hour before the futures game, so maybe a happy hour after the futures game? (7:00pmish) unless anyone truly wans to watch the celeb all star game.
  18. These next two weeks are going to be make or break for the twins, they need to survive and play .500 ball IMHO while they start getting some guys healthyx
  19. Last nights outing prob takes him out of the running for 100% of the vote. 99% of the vote on first ballot is still his for the taking.
  20. Here's hoping that Pino earns another start after tonight! Need him to step up and pick up Gibson
  21. Oh yeah, I forgot those April/May wins only count for .5 wins... I think it is clear the Twins have the SP to contend, the bullpen to contend and the hitting to potentially contend. Of course this all assumes the Twins remain relatively healthy down the stretch, but it isn't absurd to think the Twins could be within 5 or so games heading into Sept for both the Wild Card and/or Division.
  22. I don't think it was Mauer asking for the rest IIRC he said he wanted to catch every day. It was probably them protecting a long term asset..which is smart. It's great that Kurt is being an iron man at this point, but it likely isn't sustainable long term, eventually the wear and tear will effect anyone. Ideally Pinto is back up at that point and sitting Suzuki more often won't hurt the team.
