  1. The Twins finished off their pre all-star schedule on a bit of an upswing and now sit 6 games under .500 and 6.5 games out of the wild card hunt. Much will be written about the trade deadline and obviously these next two weeks will determine whether the Twins: Become complete sellers after falling completely out of it. Minor sellers after treading water. Holding if they climb back into the race, or minor buyers if they get on fire in the next two weeks. The Twins have a large strip of games at home with 3 vs Tampa, 3 vs Cleveland and 4 vs the Pale hose. Then 3 games at the baby Royals before the deadline hits. My predictions: 2 out of 3 vs Tampa 2 out of 3 vs Cleveland 3 out of 4 vs White Sox 2 out of 3 vs Royals. (9-4) This would put the Twins at one game under .500 at the deadline and likely within 4.5 games or so of the wild card. At this point I would like/expect the Twins to simply be minor sellers or holders. (Correia/Burton traded for anything+ Willingham/Suzuki kept around) If they can somehow win 10 or 11 of those games then I would like to see them try to bring in some CF help at a low cost. The march to the playoffs continue
  2. In 2010, 2012 and 2013 his WAR/$ average was right in line with what it should be, which is a very nice thing for that large of a contract. in 2011 and 2014 so far he obviously is falling much below. What does this tell us: When healthy Mauer is more than earning his contract. When he is injured/hurt he is struggling to live up to it. Moving forward if he stays relatively healthy it won't be looked as a bad contract in context, however if he has more injury set backs it will obviously hurt.' Ideally he comes back soon, starts to mash and can put up 2.5 WAR or so the rest of the season.
  3. I don't understand the fascination with every time the Twins finally get a good player on the roster, everyone wants to suddenly trade them (Dozier and Perkins are more recent examples) Suzuki is still relatively young, seems to enjoy it here and could likely be had on a team friendly 1-2 year extension. I think you absolutely have to do it, otherwise you go into 2015 with yet another question mark
  4. I think he will be able to come back strong, and will get back to 4+ WAR seasons which more or less make him "worth it"
  5. I have been to a couple all star games now, and Minneapolis/Target field absolutely crushed it in every way. -Getting around was a breeze, they had a green arrow from the hotels to the ball park, which was genius/simple but allows all the drunks/tired/weary to easily find out how to get to and from the ball park. -The ammenties at Target field were just top notch as always. That new beer machine was fun to use and they had some awesome food options including an ridiculous bloody Mary that includes a slider or brat on it. Those beer machines actually made the total cost of beers cheaper I believe, $6 got you a full cup of frosty cold bud light. -Downtown was clean/safe/fun and the parties were second to none. Those fireworks were LOUD we remember thinking it must be pissing off some of the people in town who had to work the next morning. -The game was fun and made even better by the Perkins 1-2-3 perfect inning. The staff at the ball park were great. -The Derby was a blast as well, however it still runs a little long IMO and gets a little redundant. It's a shame that Morneau/Dozier didn't make it out of the first round. -All star game souvieners get an F from me, typically I don't complain about high prices, but good lord: $45 for t-shirts, $60 for hats. There is zero possible way for someone to take a family to that game which is a shame.
  6. Thanks for hosting! And a tip of the cap to bonnes who not only was seen at 4:30pm, but at 1:30am for last call as well. Very impressed with that kind of tail battling/drinking.
  7. Booked it!
  8. I was one of the very few who didn't mind and actually liked the move. It worked out pretty well for the twins as he certainly earned his money and saved them potentially from rushing someone up in his spot earlier then need be. If he can net us a C prospect, even better. Correia likely will get another 1 or 2year contact this off season.
  9. That's why you don't pay $155 million for a guy who has never played a major league game. I'm thrilled this is happening to the Yankees, every bad karma needs to hit them until they stop spending like *******s. I mean sucks for Tanaka, but he will be fine, he has $155 million reasons not to be to upset and it isn't an injury that messes with you long term like a concussion etc.
  10. Perkins was able to have the humility to handle it, and what did he get out of it? $$$$$ and a couple all star appearances as one of the premiere closers in the league. Slowey unfortunately choose the road less traveled by and is now just another AAAA pitcher who will likely be out of the league within 12 months.
  11. Occam's razor tells us that he was probably just a bad pitcher with a bad attitude.
  12. Yeah, I am glad to see it. And honestly I would be a bit sad to see Correia go, I think he is unfairly used as a lightning rod by some for "What is wrong with the Twins" ever since they signed him for 2 years. The fact is, the guy has been healthy and pretty reliable for this team as a #5 starter. However the time has clearly come when the team has guys who likely are better immediate options (or at least need the experience)
  13. So far so good! Hard to complain about 3 out of 4 against a very good Seattle team (featuring King Felix)
  14. So by REFUSING a job from the company that was paying him quite handsomly he was looking out for his career and livelihood? How does that make sense? Nothing screams "I deserve to start period" then going 0-8 in 8 starts with a 7.25 ERA. Instead of saying that the Twins were unfairly bashing him, maybe the more reasonable assumption is that Kevin Slowey was in fact kind of a jerk and deserved whatever bashing (I use that word very liberally because I still don't think they bashed him) came upon him?
  15. They aren't out of the playoff hunt yet. They are only something like 6 games back in the wild card hunt, if they catch fire for a week or so they are suddenly right in the thick of it again. Hell a sweep (which isn't that ridiculous) against a bad Rockies team gets them to 4 games under .500 Now, as a fan do I think they will make the playoffs? Probably not, but I want to see them continue to compete until they are legitimately out of it. (10+ games out of WC in July, 8+ games in August, 6+ games Sept) Pino has earned most starts, especially considering one of the other 5 rotation spots is currently up for grabs anyways (Nolasco's) and Correias is going to open up sooner than later with a trade. By July 31st the rotation could be: Hughes Gibson Meyer May Pino Keep him in until he doesn't deserve it anymore!
  16. Im not sure why we are suddenly calling him a AAA/depth guy. He is starting games and getting good results thus far! His results thus far in the majors show him as a solid back of the rotation guy for the time being (wheels fall off etc) he was amazing in the minors this year and if things catch up to him a bit or when he is surpassed there is a pretty decent shot he can stick in the pen for a bit. Do I think he will be around long term as a starter? No. But I could see him getting another 5 or so starts this year, and a year or two in the pen as a cheap option.
  17. Oh boy here we go, down the Kevin Slowey rabbit hole again! The Twins had the AUDACITY! to criticize Slowey when he refused to goto the bullpen.
  18. Thank you for explaining to me how baseball works All I hear from folks is excuses why Pino isn't pitching well, the stats say he is pitching just fine and a peek into the advanced metrics show he is actually getting a bit unlucky with his FIP. The Twins have won 3 games of the 5 he has started. He has done a damn fine job in the meantime.
  19. I'm all about results: in 3 starts he has given up 2 or less runs, that is very good in my book.
  20. Pino deserves another start or two. 5 starts, 3 very good ones, one terrible and one mediocre. Still a spot in rotation for may/Meyer with the nolasco injury.
  21. It took him until his third season in Mil before he became "good", lets not pretend it was an overnight thing.
  22. Agreed, the Mets screwed him over big time and the Twins were a playoff team those early years Gomez was here, so the Twins were in win now mode which meant putting out their best roster each day. As bad as Gomez was hitting wise, nobody doubted the defense he had.
  23. Agreed, it certainly doesn't happen in the "tough" markets like NY, LA, etc. Michael Kay for instance has his own talk show where he is tough on the Yankees, however during the broadcasts you would never hear him rip the org. It makes for bad television and honestly can turn the "casual" fan off. It has always been like this. TV/Radio Broadcasts generally keep things light in general to make it entertaining, the sports shows the next day/radio talk shows are the ones who get all negative and rip on everyone. This isn't some Minnesota brainwashing conspiracy.
  24. I don't see how they are any more a mouthpiece then any other announcing team , they have a lot more inside info then most because of the whole fact that they spend 200+ days a year on the same exact schedule as the players. There isn't an announcing team in baseball that is just going to rip into a manager/GM/org.
