  1. I would disagree quite a bit, the Penn State jokes have been flying around since it all went down (and the jokes are pointed AT Paterno and the university etc) I don't think it is hate speech and if anything its just "Un PC" When someone says they should round up all the gays and nuke them, it pretty much is the definition of hate speech. There is no real legitimate basis of how you can defend that comment, it's not really a joke, nor does it have any purpose to be a joke. At my last job I worked with a guy who was a big Penn State guy, I used to crack jokes all the time to get under his skin and he would defend the university to the death "Paterno had no idea it was going on!!" Anyways like I mentioned it was all in good fun, however had I said something about his religion/orientation etc and made a comment like "nuke em all" I'm sure I would have been fired in about 2 seconds flat.
  2. I was very pro Kluwe, but he needs to let this thing die now. They gave Pfiefer a suspension, just let it go.
  3. Well folks, when you are right 42% of the time you are wrong 58% of the time.
  4. Because he likely doesn't even watch the team, just another bad owner in the sad history of Minnesota sports owners. If he wanted to "fix" this team he should have figured this out years ago. Norm Green the scum bag who couldn't keep it in his pants and moved the Wild from the State of Hockey! Calvin Griffin the racist. Carl Pohlad the man who tried to rob the city of Minnesota from its team. (But a better man by comparison as he was a WWII vet and never a criminal) Ziggy Wilf- Crook, should be doing 15 years for fraud/Racketeering.
  5. no.
  6. If the Twins were going to make a move it should have been in the last two off-seasons (which I was against anyways) at this point it would be pretty shoddy to all of a sudden get rid of Ryan/Gardy right before the next wave of studs play in 2015 (Buxton+Sano+Meyer+Rosario+May etc)
  7. He is only grouchy because the $$$ aren't coming through the gates, I'm sure their old man's BFF Bud Selig had a chat with them about some garbage. What is the over/under on innings the Pohlads actually watch of Twins baseball a year? 100? 50?
  8. Still doing better than our boy Chuck Knoblauch: http://deadspin.com/5912047/a-drunk-chuck-knoblauch-hit-on-us-on-the-g-train
  9. Cntrl+F+"Nick Punto"= Zero results found Cntrl+F+"Mark DeRosa"=Zero results found :fenforcer:
  10. It's also encouraging that Plouffe has improved his defense every year as well, according to the advanced metrics he is now a little above average. Couple that with a guy who can give you a 95-105 OPS+ and that gives you some value.
  11. .258 BABIP which indicates he is getting somewhat unlucky. FWIW since July 1st he has a .777 OPS, Plouffe if nothing else is a streaky hitter who can get white hot at times and ice cold at times. I don't think its out of the realm to think he couldn't get hot again for a decent chunk of the 2nd half.
  12. True, I am better with my 4 game predictions, I actually called the Twins coming back from 3 games back with 4 to play to a T (and game 163). The old BYTO folks will remember that. As far as players who can step up: Hughes, Gibson, Meyer!, Pino, Correia all have the capabilities to keep us in the games along with the occasional gem. As far as who steps up hitting wise? Seems like a good time for Doizer/Willingham/Morales to all get hot and hit some bombs.
  13. Yeah, i'm not in the "playoffs or bust" mentality, but winning breeds more winning. I would love nothing more then to be watching some somewhat meaninful games in August and hopefully Sept. Also remember, all you gotta do is stay "in it" anything can happen (i.e. 3 games back with 4 games to play)
  14. That ovation for Neshek was pretty awesome, great guy, class act and a hell of a relief pitcher once again! I'd love to see him back in a Twins uniform some day.
  15. I don't think Plouffe has much trade value and if you are only getting a C level prospect (low upside, back of rotation type guy or what not) then its worth holding onto him for the time being and figure it out next season once/if/hopefully Sano is ready. At that point he will either be hitting enough to earn another full time role, or will be a rather cheap and solid Platoon/PH/Bench player.
  16. I know a few agents, they definitely keep the players informed/let them know why they aren't in the majors at this moment in time. "Well the ballclub doesn't want to pay you more right now/in the future etc" if anything its a tactic (and effective one at that) to train the player to look out for #1 in the future.
  17. Technical Mind......IE......Internet Explorer......Technical Mind. Does. Not. Compute.
  18. It worked out to be cheaper IMHO, and some people like myself who are beer snobs 6 days a week, enjoy knocking back some cheap and easy drinking bud lights at the ball game, they just pair so perfectly with foot long hot dogs and the like.
  19. I actually thought it was pretty cool, also if you are taking clients etc to a game it is easy to just grab them a couple $20 pre loaded cards and let them go knock themselves out whenever they want a refill.
  20. I realize what the article was about.
  21. IMO it all just sort of evens out, these guys who get monster contract type deals were producing at insanely high levels when making the MLB minimum and low 7 figures for several years so you are sort of paying for that past production more or less. At the end of the day it is what it is and the teams have been setting the market price (and it's not just the large markets any more) mid market teams like the Tigers, Twins have been participating as well. I mean Mauer put up a 6.2 WAR while making 500k or so back in the day, so it makes it easier for me at least to spend 20 million on an occasional down year for Mauer (due to injury).
  22. Agreed. I think if the Twins failed to sign Mauer this org would be in a much much worse shape then it is now. Nobody would be coming to the park and the Twins would still be perceived as "cheap" The reality of large contracts are more often then not you are going to have a couple years where the player doesn't produce (typically towards the end), but hey, it is what it is. It's not like I am footing the bill for him anyways.
  23. Yeah, and while it's not going to please the sabre or bust community of fans, as a fan it is nice to actually see some of your favorite players play their entire career with your favorite team. It really sucks to see Morneau in a Rockies jersey, I know there wasn't a space for him on this team but he is another guy I would have liked to see stay a life long Twin. Mauer in anything but a Twins uniform would be just as weird as seeing Jeter wearing a Houston Astros jersey.
  24. 1. He is only 30, locking him up til 32 is a very low risk. He has proven to be nothing but durable this year. 2. While I don't totally dismiss that stat, I think it is much much more difficult to prove/track/quantify then what is being put out there. I think Suzuki has been a very good offensive catcher and has been "solid" behind the dish. Any stat that says that Pinto has been a better defensive catcher then Suzuki or whatever just shows that flaw in the stat IMO. 3. As mentioned that is why I goto him with an extension. 4. It's piece of mind/safe to sign now. If he suddenly gets injured by a bat to the head/torn knee etc you are looking at a guy playing on a small one year deal next year, if his bat suddenly disappears..ditto. Additionally if he likes playing here/the playing time he can get then it isn't ridiculous to think he wouldn't listen/consider a solid 2 year offer. 12-15 million sounds about right. If he turns it down or indicates he absolutely wants to test the FA market, then I think at that point you trade him if you fall out of the race in the next two weeks.
