  1. Surprised Meyer and/or May didn't get the nod?
  2. Thanks for the clarification, if the Twins weren't loaded with toolsy OF i would say sure, why not if the Pirates ate half of the contract. However as much of a short term upgrade he would be, he would likely be relegated to 4 OF at best status as early as next May.
  3. I mean hindsight makes it look like a bad contract, however it's not like they owe him a ton of money he likely wouldn't have been making anyways. The three option years would have been a bargain for the Pirates had he progressed like they thought he would.
  4. He has only played in 23 games this year, I'd have to think it would be at least another few weeks before the Twins would even consider it, and while he has been hitting well in AA he hasn't exactly been lighting the league on fire. I think Hicks gets another shot before they go down the Eddie Rosario route.
  5. Tabata is much better IMHO, however this is worth noting below: Its worded poorly, does this mean basically he would be forfeiting his entire deal if he elected FA? Or just the 250k buyout option? Tabata is owed roughly $1.59MM over the remainder of the current season, $4MM in 2015 and $4.5MM in 2016. The buyout on his first option is $250K, meaning he’s guaranteed roughly $10.34MM through the end of 2016. As a player with more than three years of Major League service time that was outrighted, Tabata has the option to reject the assignment in favor of free agency, though in doing so he would forfeit the remaining guarantee on his contract, making the option more or less a moot point.
  6. I guess we will see. I know they looked into changing it after the 2012 Derby. http://espn.go.com/mlb/allstar12/story/_/id/8154165/major-league-baseball-considers-home-run-derby-rule-change-robinson-cano-booing
  7. He is better than Fuld.
  8. If it was truly 100% about the televison audience, then they would have made a Dodger and a Yankee a captain. People are going to watch the home derby regardless if Willingham is chosen or not.
  9. Sorry about that, I still don't see the "wall" that he hit, and I am not sure where/when we should have brought him up earlier.
  10. It was sarcasm..settle down. My theory is will he will pick a hometown guy because it is highly encouraged for him to do so.
  11. At this point, Plouffe is likely going to be our starting 3rd baseman at the beginning of 2015 regardless, so their should be no rush getting him out the door either way.
  12. The 71 IP wall? I like Meyer as much as the next guy and think he has a bright future, but let's not play revisionist history here and say the Twins were 100% wrong in not bringing up Meyer earlier, if anything his recent struggles show the Twins perhaps have been correct in their handling of him.
  13. Actually in the new format he would be best served not to choose the five best sluggers he can, since it is now a tournament style format where he would have to go 1 v 1 against other AL participants before the championship match against the NL.
  14. This year it is expaneded to 5 from each league, I think that pretty much guarantees the Twins get one in. Willingham is prob the best bet as he is the most pure "HR" hitter they have. Tulo already said he wants to pick Morneau. Additionally I would like to see Ortiz (glutton for punishment), Abreu and Mike Trout for the AL.
  15. Honestly, with the way the rotation is shaping up and assuming May sticks (big assumption) there may not be any room in the rotation for him anyways (unless Correia is traded and Pino falters etc) What are the odds they give Meyer some innings out of the pen on the big league club?
  16. Yeah, I agree that May is prob the next one up, however this sort of assumes Pino will get a few more starts (hopefully stays effective for us). I really don't see them bringing up May until after the all-star game at this point, as I think having him pitch in the futures game in Target Field could be the perfect "intro to the big leagues" for him. Regardless I think Pino has earned a couple more starts which should cover that timeline anyways.
  17. Bingo. I think DeDuno is the next pitcher out, either when Pino moves to the pen (and May/Meyer take his spot) or they simply have a roster crunch. I like DeDuno and would prefer he would be unclaimed and stick with the team as he would be nice depth at AAA, however losing him would be no real big loss IMO. Also after DeDuno I think Swarzak has to be the next man out, he had a solid 2013, but hasn't done a whole lot in his other years including 2014, he isn't bad or anything, I just think they would be better served giving those innings to someone with a bit more upside. Perkins Fien Burton Theilbar Pino Burdi Duensing/Guerrier Could be a pretty solid pen in a month or two.
  18. This team can't afford to have Dozier out of the lineup at this point, and he is about to get at least a few days off in a couple weeks. Florimon honestly has no real business being on the major league roster. Both Santana/Escobar can handle SS just fine, and if absolutely need be Nunez can handle as well.
  19. Exactly how are burton and Guerrier bad players? Burton has been effective as of late and in 2012/2013, Matt has been effective for sure this year. And yes, currently the twins are contenders, if they find themselves 10 games out 5 weeks from now then I will likely change my tune.
  20. In re: to Suzuki's bat, I get that he is getting lucky, but he is making some real nice contact, while I don't think a 124 OPS+ is exactly sustainable for him, I do believe he has turned some sort of corner at the plate though and found his stroke (or maybe even better) then he had early in his career, his 15 doubles so far already equals his 2013 mark, and is going to smash his 20 in 2012. Before then he was a guy who would give you close to a mid 90's OPS+ which is actually just fine for a starting catcher. Yeah, yeah I get that BABIP is luck driven for him at times, but as the old saying should go: Doubles never lie.
  21. I'd argue that signing Suzuki to a two year extension would improve the team significantly more over the next 2-3 years then anyone they would get back in a trade.
  22. Hicks will be fine, perhaps this whole lowering of expectations amongst all is exactly what he needs to eventually thrive, it certainly worked for Plouffe (before his sudden and shocking big year at AAA) and Dozier who both eventually caught up to their raw talent. It's frustrating he switched back so suddenly, but I give him credit for having the balls to realize his new approach wasn't going to work, and then go back to the switch hitting, even if he knew it would irk some people. I will be rooting for him more than ever now, and Ryan is right, he is the best CF option we have at this point.
  23. Also, anyone trying to argue that the main reason Burton is still up on the majors because of his 3.25 mil salary this year is wrong IMO. The Twins have cut bait with plenty of guys who make money over the years, look no further than Nishioka and Kubel the past two years...3.25 owed this year (2 mil or so pro-rated) is not the reason Burton is still up, the reason he is still up because he has 2+ years for the Twins being effective and recently has been effective again as well. The fact is, the Twins aren't the penny pinching bad guys many people make them out to be: (see the two examples I just mentioned, along with the Hughes, Nolasco, Morales, Mauer signings as well)
  24. Burton had the third best WAR amongst the Twins RP each of the last two years. The Twins are very much in the thick of the division and WC race thus far this year, I don't see how Burton's age has to do with anything. Additionally he is only 33 years old, people act like he is 42 years old and hanging on, plenty of pitchers and even more so relief pitchers pitch effectively into their late 30's and certainly into their "mid" 30's. I don't understand the hating on MattG at this point either, if nothing else his results have been pretty damn solid (2.65 ERA) 3.03 FIP Plenty of contending teams have MRP in their mid to late 30's, the reason why is because those pitchers have proven themselves to be capable relief pitchers over the course of a significant length of a major league career.
