Twins Depth Will Look Different in 2024
Fatbat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is why I dislike comparing minor leaguers. Every player is different and develops at different times. Has their own ups and downs. You can’t progress as a team without bringing up rookies every year. When they are ready, they absolutely have to be brought up and see what shakes out. The ‘24 roster doesn’t need to rely on rookies but we do need to move forward at some point instead of bringing in reclamation projects to block the rookies that are ready. Neither one of us knows when each one will be ready, thats above our paygrade but we definitely get to opine here on what we as fans want to see. For instance, I’d be ok with MAT or Kiermair signing for ‘24 but if it blocks Martin or Kiersey when they are ready, it would be a waste of time, talent and money. Playing Gallo into August was an example of just that. Moving forward, many have thrown Miranda overboard just because he was hurt and didn’t contribute anything last year. What if he comes back and is a solid contributor in ‘24? I’m sure the FO has some sort of idea about his health and it’s possible that is why they haven’t pulled the trigger on getting a RH bat vet signed. Come February/March, we will have a much better idea where our 40 man shakes out.- 22 replies

Or you bring up a minor leaguer like they did with celestino and wreck them.

Twins Depth Will Look Different in 2024

The same way Northwest Airlines merged with Delta Airlines. A bankrupt Co can buy or get bought if it pleases the court and a financially healthy co is the end result after the books are gone thru and certain assets are sold/retained and so forth.- 22 replies

Twins Depth Will Look Different in 2024
Fatbat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We got plenty of vets getting paid well that don’t produce any better than our rookies last year. At least we aren’t holding our youngsters back on a slow walk. Lee for example has been promoted as soon as he has been ready and will likely get another promotion in early ‘24, just as soon as he is ready. I would much rather go down that bumpy road than wasting money on gallo and archer. I’d also hand CF over to Martin as soon as he is ready rather than paying 3-8 M on an average vet. I don’t want to be average. I want to watch young stars of the future take a few lumps and bumps and develop into above average vets. It quite obvious kiermiars and hopkins arent going to sign with us. I want to see Lee, Martin, Severino, Headrick, Varland, SWR, Festa, Canterino, and another rookie or two contribute sometime in ‘24. We already have a really good 26 man roster with a few questions to be answered. I’m not one bit worried that the 26 best will be available open day and we will be central div champs in ‘24. Its what we do between now and the trade deadline that will determine how October goes. A few roles to fill and a long time to get it done. In the mean time we all get to spout off on our opinions. Thats what this place is for.- 22 replies

@tony&rodney I agree that Paddock has a higher ceiling than Maeda which is why they let him walk butI would have offered him the QO to get either the extra draft pic and extra signing $$$or the stability of less player turnover. The FO chose the cheap option by letting him walk for nothing safe budget saving.

I am ok with Gray getting a QO and declining it because we got a draft pick back. I would have done the same for Maeda because we would have had two better outcomes. 1.we got Maeda as a one yr rental/tradechip for 20.5M or 2. We get another draft pick before the 3rd rd in’24. Both are better than nothing except $20.5M unspent. Its most likely that Maeda would have turned down the QO anyway because he wanted a multi year deal so we basically threw a draft pick away.

Considering that he is 6 years younger than gray and that gray was never like gray ‘24, along with Paddack having better raw stuff than ever post TJ, I’d say its a good bet that Paddack has a great chance at being a front line starter in the next 3 years. Hence my statement. I stand by it.

The FO should make a play for Burnes but only if his agent and Ownership is on board to do a 3-4 yr extension with an option yr or 2 beyond that. I would imagine its gonna cost us a bit of young assets and maybe you include polo just to dump the 10.5M to help sign Burnes long term. No way we give up Raya, CBP ‘24 and Polo for a one year rental.

The Team will be even better if Paddack ends up more like Gray and we also pick up a front line starter that is around for 3-4 years.

Ex-Twins Pitchers are a Hot Free Agent Commodity: What Does That Tell Us?
Fatbat commented on NishiokaStan's blog entry in Northern Platitudes
Cincy saw what they wanted to see. A more mature player that has possibly honed his craft. Seems like a big risk to us because we saw all those blown saves. We look back and we see garbage from 2022. They look forward to a shot at having the best version of Pagan. Such is the dilemma with MLB pitchers and guys that hire them. the Twins finally seem to be doing something really right with player development. Cincy also seems to want to buy anything that says “I played for the Twins” -
Supposedly his trade value right now is higher than Arraez per some guy that supposedly knows baseball. Ok , so I will go with that. Better trade value than an allstar/2 time batting champ. He has flown thru the minor leagues and is going to be invited to MLB spring training in his 2nd spring in pro ball. Thats pretty 🤩 impressive. If you were a FO that drafted him #8, have a #6 ranked MLB roster with just a couple holes to fill… largest being a pitcher that has to win you games in October, would you not keep this future foundational piece? Wouldn’t you clear a path for him to be one of the faces of your franchise? No FO is trading away that kind of guy when they have so many other assets that can be used fill that need. Ownership says win cheaply. FO gets lucky twice in consecutive years by drafting guys that should have been gone before they pick. FO guy has learned from the Cavaco pick and the Mahle trade and still has #6 ranked MLB roster. Lucky FO guy can’t possibly trade away his best future assets but he can plug and play them. Build around them. Win 🏆 Championships, build a dynasty.

2023 Major League Baseball Winter Meetings Preview
Fatbat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Looks like the Marlins are looking for pitching depth so we wont be dealing with them. Is it possible to get a deal done for Glasnow without selling the farm? What would it take? I got a bad feeling they will take a flyer on a rule 5 guy. Its been a minute since their last bad decision so why not try a little harder. Doing nothing/no harm could be their best case scenario . -
MS at 18-20M isn’t going to happen. He would be lucky to get a 1 yr 12M prove it from the FO. He is most likely a better fit elsewhere. Part of the premise of this post is that we have to find 288innings. Fair enough but you need to include Paddack in that conversation. He will be 24 months removed from TJ by May so can we count on 120 innings from him? Why not? We got 104 from Maeda last year. Will our other top 3 guys up their game in ‘24? I would hope so. They are all young and have upside in their analytics. So if each of them just add .5 WAR more than last year, we will take another central division crown if Paddack just equals Maeda. Thats not asking much. Some combo of Varland and the rest of the youngsters should at least equal the WAR from those spots starts of ‘23. This is all predicated on someone replacing Gray and his 184 innings and his WAR. Well…. That just isn’t going to happen without some sort big trade or FA signing which isn’t in risk/reward spectrum (mahle) or the budget. Do we really have to find Grays missing WAR or just find some inning eaters? The offense lit up in the 2nd half. Can we count on that to continue? I would say yes since our offense is intact (-MAT&Donny) …. Easily replaceable offensive production. Seems like the budget says, buy some cheaper inning eaters and let the youngsters load up the bases.

Why Didn’t the Twins Sign Sonny Gray or Kenta Maeda?
Fatbat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
@Nine of twelveThe Twins could be St. louis Cards in 50-80 years but it takes actual investment in marketing/production of a winning team. -
I super dislike comparing minor leaguers but I did because CM is ranked 17th, Lee 18th. Chicago is hoping he is their starting SS in April and I brought that up because they did burn it down somewhat and I don’t want the Twins to ever do that. I believe that Lee and CM will be compared for years by people because of the rivalry and their careers starting at roughly the same time. Rankings are comparisons and it’s inevitable but yuck. the Twins right now seem to be a better organization than many and we really have to be because of our small market. I just can’t wrap my head around what an “expert” claims is someones value as compared to another. Way to many variables which I believe is why top prospects don’t get traded. Trading lottery picks and established major leaguers makes much more sense.

Twins Expect to Add Starting Pitcher This Offseason
Fatbat replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Back on topic, It is possible to get a decent FA SP or via trade this offseason. Looking back on what the FO has done previously makes me hope they have learned their lesson on reclamation guys. We also have 2 guys(Varland &Festa) that look better than any of the guys in the same position over the last 7-8 years. I will have to exclude Ober because he was last years Varland situation. Having Ober be the odd man out worked perfectly. The same strategy should work to motivate Varland to up his game as well in ‘24. We need some depth but more importantly, we need a guy in October to shut down game 2. Is Giolitto that guy? How about Paddack? Someone has to be that guy or we don’t win 2 let alone 3 playoff series. Its a huge gamble to wait until the aug trade deadline to get that guy. I see a team that can get to October as we stand now with a couple guys to round out the 40 man but we need to do better and get the guy that is going to drop the game 2 hammer. Just get the guy. -
In order to compare apples to apples, don’t you have to throw Lee’s college stats in as well? How high does his ops go if you just add in his last college season? Thats the last time he actually played against the same age of athletes. He ate them for lunch. In 2023, he was playing against guys 3 years older than him. A direct comparison to Julien would have had to be done with Lee playing in Cedar Rapids IA for the whole year of ‘23. I bet he would have lit up that league and got everyone screaming to have him skip AA and go right to the Saints in April after an invite to spring training. People are already asking if Jenkins is gonna get an invite this year. I hate comparing minor leaguers. It’s literally impossible to make anything but applesauce.
-
I think that if you ask Varland and Festa if we need another SP, I bet they would both say “don’t sleep on us being everything the team needs in ‘24-27. They both have a ton of development and pitches to throw to prove how good they will be but I’m not gonna bet against them. The Twins do need more pitching in ‘24 but it may well come from within in 24/25.
-
The legend of Royce Lewis has just begun. Slipping on ice and blowing an acl could happen to anyone but look what he has done. People used to bash him in the minors because his setup/swing wasn’t perfect. These kids will develop their craft at different rates. I dislike comparisons for that very reason.
-
I would be willing to bet that the FO sees Lee, Jenkins and Erod as off the trade table. They have plenty of other assets to package up to get pitching. The guy(S) they get really depends on the trading partner. It seems like its a sellers market so I personally think they should pivot and sign a FA. Just my opinion that isnt worth much. 🤣
-
Do you know of a team that has a need for Lee and would be willing to trade away a #2 SP? I doubt that you could find one that didn’t have enough risk to actually trade Lee away. Plenty of guys full of warts but nothing like a Jordan Montgomery that we could just go buy if we had the budget to do so.
-
Obviously polo and farmer don’t get you Pablo but neither does Lee on his own. It took a batting champ and a willing team with a need for a 2B to trade away Pablo. As of right now, would Miami trade Pablo for Lee today if Arraez /Pablo didn’t happen last year? 100% no way. They would still be asking for arraez.
-
I’m not saying he is ready in April but I do think in the next year, he will be on the varsity because he forces his way there. we traded Arraez because Julien and Lee we’re waiting behind him so if you go apples to apples. Its Polo and Farmer that you trade. You also have to identify the player and a team willing to do a trade. Good luck getting a Pablo for a miner leaguer vs. a batting champ
-
I see a clear path for Lee to be a starter in the next year. Farmer and Polo will likely be gone. Julien will likely be a DH heavy 2nd base platoon guy. Lee, Lewis and C4 slot in anywhere You want to put them in the IF. AK and hopefully Miranda round out the infield. It will arguably be the best in MLB for years to come. You think payroll is an issue now. How will you be paying all this guys when they get to arbitration and beyond. There is plenty of other talent to package together to get another 1/2 ace like Pablo. 3 yrs from now, we may be WS champs and Miller will be knocking down the door to start at SS. C4 may very well have been traded for that ace. In the mean time, don’t trade away your future allstars.
