  1. I see the names Masterson and Blackburn thrown out there. Are those comps that were given to him by scouts, or were they comps given to him by commenters on this board who looked at a stat-line and threw names out? Just curious. Even for height/build comparisons, Ruiz does not look ANYTHING like those two. Is it because he is a groundball pitcher, so to speak, and those are two AL central pitchers we have seen pitch in the recent past? Why not compare to a LOT of other pitchers?
  2. That's awesome! Can't wait!
  3. Ruiz tonight; 5ip, 1 bb, 2 hits, 5 k, 0 runs. Better results to say the least
  4. I don't know, maybe I'm more bullish on him than I should be, but I absolutely have Buxton over Sano, at least for future overall value. Maybe I'm wrong.
  5. The national domestic violence hotline is 1.800.799.7233. Locally in the Twin Cities, Tubman is an advocate for domestic violence, and their 24 hour domestic violence line is 612.825.0000. If you are in need of help or resources, or know someone that may be in need of resources, please pass these phone numbers along.
  6. In his first game last night, Ruiz went 4 1/3, giving up 5 hits, 3 runs (all earned) with 1 bb and 4 k's. He threw 26 of his 30 pitches for strikes. He took the loss for his team, Aguilas Cibaenas. Here is the link to the box score. I recognize a few other names for both teams. http://mlb.mlb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?gid=2016_10_21_aguwin_gigwin_1&t=g_box&sid=l131
  7. I didn't feel dismissed at all. If someone does or doesn't like the look of a player has nothing to do with me sharing a story someone else wrote. I appreciate that the twins are at least looking at players, of which they haven't signed a player from Cuba in forever. They may sign him, they may not. He may be a cy young winner (doubt it) or he may never get past AA (who knows) but I certainly don't feel dismissed because someone has an opinion on a story that I simply shared and had no doing in writing whatsoever.Aren't we all here because we have opinions anyway? That is what is fun about this site, talking about baseball 24/7
  8. Yes, but that doesn't mean it is dumb to sign him

  10. Agreed. Still, if he is that highly ranked, may as well be worth a shot. There isn't much online in the way of numbers for him since he has not played in the Cuban league since 2014. And it would be at least as much a chance of doing something than compared to most everyone on the free agent market
  11. Darren Wolfson is reporting that the Twins will watch Cuban FA pitcher Norge Ruiz throw tonight in the Dominican League. Also watched him in exhibition last week. (That is verbatim what Wolfson wrote on twitter. I am having trouble copy and pasting.) Here is his writeup from mlb pipeline. He is the top available international free agent, and the #3 overall from this signing period... RHP Bats R Throws R Age 22, DOB: 3/15/1994 Ht 6'0" Weight 185 lb Scouting Grades: Fastball 55, Slider 55, Change 50, Split 50, Control 60 Ruiz has been called a bulldog on the mound because of his tenacity and aggressive approach. There's a belief that the right-handed pitcher is almost ready to pitch in the Major Leagues and could be pitching in the big leagues in some capacity by the end of 2016 or early 2017. Here's why: Ruiz has a fastball that has been clocked at 94 mph and he often works in 90-92 mph range. He throws a "heavy fastball," and his repertoire also features a slider, a cut-fastball, a changeup and a split-fastball thrown at various arm angles. He's a groundball pitcher with the ability to change speeds and keep hitters off balance in the batter's box. He's not physically intimidating, but he knows how to pitch and evaluators like how he handles himself on the mound. That said, Ruiz's command has been described as "scattered at times." Pitching coach Fausto "Chiqui" Mejia and former Major League pitcher Alberto Reyes worked with Ruiz in the Dominican Republic. The pitcher is represented by Octagon.
  12. From Keith Law's chat today... Zach: Encouraged by you blurb on Nick Gordon, is there anything you can expand on regarding what looked good to you? Any chance we'll see him in MN in 2018? Keith Law: That's probably the absolute earliest, but I'd bet 2019. He's a good player who just really knows the game - his instincts everywhere are readily apparent. I don't think he will ever be flashy like Dee, but he's a better all-around player for me.
  13. The other Gibson/Rockies thread, there were people in that thread not believing that talks ever happened with the Rockies and Gibson.
  14. I would argue Rosario over Pat Light, but that's just me
  15. FYI, Florida is playing at Vanderbilt April 13, 14 and 15. I don't know if I could make that trip with two young kids at home, but that would certainly be a fun road trip with the possibility of seeing 4 of the top potential picks in the draft (Faedo, Schwarz on Florida and Wright and Kendall on Vanderbilt. Plus Nashville is a pretty fun town, or so I have heard.
  16. Just because a trade for prospects didn't work once doesn't mean you wouldn't do that again. I want to believe that Falvey and company would know the types of players they are looking for, and would acquire players that at some point they believe could help the major league roster. If that means a top 50 prospect and a couple of other lower level pitchers, or even a top 50 prospect who is a year or so away along with someone who has had a cup of coffee in the majors and is ready to be in the rotation, I am good with that. They will be able to acquire talent for Dozier, and they should definitely do that.
  17. Jason Castro and his elite level framing skills would be an ENORMOUS upgrade at the catcher spot. Suzuki was so awful at that skill (as well as blocking pitches) that the Twins may not realize how bad they have had it for years until someone comes in who can play competently. Aaron Gleeman mentioned it in his recent podcast, but he could see the Twins saying their starter and backup catcher are not currently in the organization. Unless Murphy can turn it around (which I think he will) I am good with that possibility. Catcher is a position that the Twins ABSOLUTELY need an upgrade.
  18. If Escobar is 100% healthy I am totally on board with him being the SS opening day ongoing. He just, well, he didn't play this year like someone who is healthy. I'm hoping for the best for him, but we'll see.
  19. But with whip, the higher number is worse. Isn't a higher number for range factor generally a good thing?
  20. I am not very up on what it measures then, I assumed it did it's best to measure range, or what balls a player is able to get to. What does it measure?
  21. I don't know for certain that any players have been decided on which position they are going to play next year. Falvey is in charge now for roster configuration. What in the world would he put a guy back at SS that was such a trainwreck last year? I mean, maybe Polanco does get a LOT better this offseason to get anywhere close to league average (and that would take a LOT of progress) but with the (hopeful/probable) trade of Dozier to strengthen an area of weakness elsewhere (pitching/catching) wouldn't just sliding Polanco over to his more natural position make sense?
  22. We assume Vielma will be as good of a defender, we don't know how he will be at the MLB level. It is up to the front office to decide what is best. And no, I want Cozart personally both because I don't believe that Vielma is ready, AND that I don't think he will cost a ton to acquire in assets. If the Reds are needing two top 10 prospects, I probably look elsewhere. If they are ok with Palka and a GCL arm, I am on board 100%. That said, it would probably land somewhere in the middle.
  23. No reason to think the Twins will work same old/same old. That hasn't gotten them anywhere, really, over the last 6 years, and arguably more. I don't know if they will blow it up, or ride the course, or some of both. I'm excited because I think Falvey can come in and help bring the front office up to speed (and hopefully ahead, eventually) of other major league front offices. At that point, if they deem any of the players on the roster to be assets worth keeping around, they will keep them. If they see value in flipping them for undervalued players elsewhere, I hope they do that.
