  1. Although we have opposite views of replay, I agree with much of what you're saying here. When a runner touches first base after leaving the batter's box, he can run through it--he doesn't have to hold it. 2nd is different, because running through it puts the runner in the field of play (3rd base would put him in foul territory like 1st base). I wouldn't mind seeing a rule change that allowed a runner to be safe if he makes contact with 2nd safely and makes no move toward 3rd or otherwise impeded play. Beating the throw (or the tag) at 2nd (and 3rd, for that matter) could be treated the same as 1st and home. And I'd not squawk too much if the replay had to be shown in real time, but there is still the advantage of different angles unavailable to the ump on the field. Ultimately, I want the calls to be right, and the networks would slow down the play to show how the ump and replay review official didn't get it right if slow-mo showed the correct call wasn't made. 2. I'm not asking if the technology is perfect--all I want to know is if it is better than what we now have. Since I'm convinced it is, I agree that it can't get here soon enough. JcS
  3. One of the great things about instant replay is that it cut WAY down on grown men throwing an infantile fit. It was not the least bit entertaining. Saying "I prefer the human element" is conceding that mistakes are preferable to correct calls. I'm on the other side of that coin. JcS
  4. Maybe the Marlins will want to deal Arraez back to the Twins...:) JcS
  5. That was my first thought when I saw that line, but then I got the cadence and realized which Springsteen song it was. No biggie, you can edit it and delete these notes. JcS
  6. Ok, I'll be "that guy." "Atlantic City" came out in 1982 on NEBRASKA. JcS
  7. I'm one that didn't care about the WBC, didn't watch any of it except a couple of innings of the US/UK game and maybe 6 innings of the final. I don't mind that others liked it, but I was more interested in the NCAA tourney. I think the jury is still out as to the effect it will have on attendance and viewership for MLB this season. I'll ask because I don't know: Is there an uptick in track meet attendance in the USA after the Olympics? Do more people watch soccer on TV after the World Cup in America in the months after that exhibition is over? JcS
  8. Wonder if they can get Arraez back? Wonder why they traded him to start with? JcS (Yes, I am still miffed about that, why do you ask?)
  9. I wondering just how long I'm going to be irritated that Arraez is no longer a Twin. Because as of today, I still am... JcS
  10. I have the Extra Inning package, so I get 26 of the 30 teams--I'm blacked out of Houston, St. Louis, Kansas City and Texas (even though I'm over 4 hours from the closest stadium)--unless one of those 4 are playing one of the 26. I can, however, see the blackout games an hour and a half after they end. So, to see those 14 KC games and the 15-17 with the others, I will either wait and see them the next morning or go to https://mlb66.ir/simulator to watch them live on my laptop. I don't get about 1/5 of what I pay for with Extra Innings because of the blackout rules, but I can't make myself go to the bootleg site full time. At least not yet.
  11. I heard a long time ago that if someone bets you that the Jack of Clubs will jump out of the deck of cards in their hand and squirt cider in your ear, don't take the bet unless you want to have an ear full of cider. I get the notion of the thrill, of being smarter than everyone else, etc. But the props in this opening note are totally a guess at this point. JcS

  13. I frequently start notes like this with: I know the ones that decided to make this trade know more about baseball in general and their team in particular than I ever will. That said, I didn't like this deal last year, and I still don't. Players can certainly improve, but many tend to regress to the mean after they have been in the big leagues for awhile. I thought Cano was still on the upswing, and Lopez had just caught lightning in a bottle for half a year. And THAT said, I did appreciate that the front office was trying to win last year when it made this move; maybe they saw something in Lopez that my untrained eye couldn't, and maybe his mean will be better than what we saw in August and September. I was at the last game of the 5 games set in Cleveland in September, and he looked as lost as a goose on the mound. This line surprised me, because I didn't think he got two outs: IP H R ER BB K 0.2 4 4 4 2 0 It was so bad, Palacios had to finish it up. Yeah, I know, small sample size, everyone gets lit up now and then, etc. But it looked horrible in person. JcS EDIT: I just looked at his last five appearances, and it looked like 5 scoreless innings, with 1 hit. THAT may be what attracted the FO to trade for him.
  14. I keep in mind the adage that "horse sense is what keeps horses from betting on people." Why anyone would take any of these bets even up at this time of year is beyond my capability of understanding. JcS
  15. Gordon also proved in that series that putting him at second base was not a great option.
  16. Uh, not start Archer or anyone else that you know is not able to go a starter's load? If the order came from above him, then it's on the GM. That said, I traveled 15 hours last September to see the Twins play the Guardians Guardians in a five game set. When I made my plans to go, it was quite possible that the winner of the series would be in the driver's seat for the division title. In those five games, I saw Ober, Winder, Ryan, Gray and Varland start. I'd been watching all year, seeing how the starters were hurt and guys that didn't need to be there, were. Add to that an outfield of Cave, Celestino, and Wallner, and I knew the Twins were in trouble (they lost all but Ryan's start). And THAT said, my thoughts were directed more to 2023 than 2022. The mindset when the game starts needs to be to get as much from the starter as the game dictates, and not to use players that can't go deep. One exception is when an opener is appropriate, but even that presupposes the next man up is going to burn up some innings. JcS
  17. THIS! I understand--and like the research behind--the analytics on pitchers facing an order a third time. But since I've been watching the game--1966--pitchers went deeper into the game with regularity if they weren't getting shelled. JcS
  18. Ok, I'll bite: Why doesn't Joey Gallo count?
  19. First thing I thought of when I saw this was "do not line up too many left handed hitters in a row, even against a righty." These days, since a pitcher has to face three batters, a lefty reliever needs to be sure of seeing at least one right handed batter. Polanco in the midst of some lefties would do that--and of course, provides a left handed bat when a slew of righties are due up. JcS
  20. I get 2021 was a disaster, but let's not forget that the Twins were in the division race as Labor Day approached in 2022. I drove from Western Arkansas to Cleveland to see them play the 5 game series with the Guardians in mid-September, but when I made the plans to go, I thought that series was going to be much more important than it turned out to be. Twins lost 4 of 5, but with guys like Cave, Celestino, Wallner, Contreras, and Billy Hamilton in the outfield, Gordon playing out of position at second, and four rookie starters in the series (Ryan, Winder, Ober and Varland), I couldn't really have expected much more. The injury bug bites all teams, but it bit the Twins hard last year while they were in first place. JcS
  21. I'm not too interested in the batting title, but rather comparing his BA and OBA to the league averages, and how productive his outs were--strikeouts don't move runners, but some outs do. And I knew he was playing hurt in the second half of the season. JcS
  22. I thought about this overnight. I still don't like it. JcS
  23. Anytime I see a trade like this, I am reminded of the mindset of selling stocks. If I dump 100 shares of Apple, someone is buying them. I sell because I think they are going down, the buyer thinks they are going up. Some here think Arraez peaked last year. I don't, and obviously, the Marlins don't, or they wouldn't have traded for him. He's 25, and I have no reason to think that he won't do even better at the plate in the next 10 years than he did this year. BUT...I realize the Twins front office has to evaluate what his upside is as opposed to what they get for him, and *I* am not bothered by the $$$ that are in play. Still, all that said, I agree with the lady in THE PRINCESS BRIDE:
  24. As a proponent of the electronic strike zone, I do not want Altuve and Judge having the same zone. The computer should be able to make that adjustment, or a human make it. JcS
