If the Cubs didn't mess up, Jeffers was an easy out. It does pay to be aggressive. On a related note, I wish we didn't have so many slow guys.

He was placed on the Development List, not released. Yunior Severino was released.

Lots of right handed batters in the lineup with Lee and Clemens on the bench to start. Cubbies starting a different catcher and third baseman, but their lineup is head and shoulders better than the Twins. The Slim Reaper needs to be sharp from his first pitch.

I was at that game! The Twins got a close call at first base in the first inning and Keuchel kept the Pirates off balance for seven (?) innings. The ump was giving a couple of inches on the outside corner and Keuchel kept using that space. I don't think he threw a fastball over 88.

Nice game for Rodriguez as he returned from the Injured List. A lot of notable good hitting, including Eeles at St. Paul and Rosario, Gonzalez and Culpepper at Wichita. I again want to inquire about Patrick Winkel. It has been my understanding that his bat is questionable, but he's a good receiver. He's a left handed hitter and he has an .844 OPS this year. He has seven homers in 95 plate appearances. Aaron Sabato is another positive story. It seems that he was going to be confirmed as a first round bust, but has been among the most productive Twins' minor league hitters this year.

Speaking of left handed and breathing, the Twins DFA'd Joey Wentz today. I am willing to bet that Joey will get chances with other teams this year and beyond. -
Currently, it isn't a plug and play against right handed pitching. Excluding the catchers, the Twins have 10 options for eight positions in the batting order. Right handed hitters France, Lewis and Bader start more often than not (Bader is hot right now, France is not, Lewis seems to be going slightly better) but any of them could be out of the lineup against a right hander. Clemens has started at both second and first, but also has been on the bench, Lee also has started at multiple positions, but has been on the bench a couple of times. Castro is a regular, but could be starting at any of three positions. I was mildly disappointed that Baldelli went with the all-right handed lineup last night. From an offensive perspective, having Vázquez in the lineup shortens it greatly, not only because he is in it, but because he won't be pinch hit for unless it is the bottom of the ninth and the Twins have a chance to tie or take the lead. I have zero problem with one of Larnach or Wallner out of the lineup against a lefty. Right now Bader and Castro are better options.

I like SWR a lot as a pitcher and competitor, but in today's game, he isn't dominant. His velo is about average (I think he had a couple of pitches measured at 96, but mostly 92-94), he doesn't get a lot of swings and misses and he has a pedestrian strikeout rate (7.8 Ks per 9). His margin for error is pretty small and he has had episodes where it all falls apart quickly. When someone asked what Woods Richardson has to do to work deeper in games, my tongue-in-cheek reply was "score more runs". but I meant it. If the score was 4 or 5 to 0, the manager indicated he would stick with his starter. IIRC, SWR has worked deeper in two games where he was behind, but Rocco wants to make sure when the starter pitches to a lead that the ball gets to the bullpen with a lead. I'm neutral on the manager, probably most critical of not getting young players to take the step of becoming lineup, bullpen or rotation fixtures because they are overprotected. Sim is Exhibit A when it comes to the young starters.- 66 replies

I’m bumping this thread. Last night SWR pitched shutout ball for five innings. He is on a run of short but effective starts. He has a winning record and has lowered his ERA to 4.08. It looks like he is now using the split-finger fastball as his off-speed pitch and it’s been pretty effective. Noting again that Sim is younger than either Zebby Matthew’s and David Festa, should he be regarded as above those guys in the pecking order? He certainly has better major league numbers.

Yes, please. They hung on to Bride for about a month too long and now seem enamored with Wentz. Somebody, anybody can do better IMHO and he's taking up a valuable 40-man spot.

Talent is what is lacking for the Twins. If Rocco is fired, it will be because he and his staff haven't developed talent to stay competitive. I think that's really true with the hitters and I blame the front office to a degree because so many players on the team are bat-first or bat-only. If the Twins add on enough half the time that they don't have to all of their high-leverage guys, it reduces the stress on the BP and minimizes defensive flaws and the team's lack of speed. And if they score in the middle innings they have enough cushion to keep their young starter another inning or two. Their offensive production and development has been disappointing and it's hard to take off the training wheels when about three or four pitches can turn the game around. The second guess on the manager for pulling or not pulling a pitcher is always 20-20. I've agreed that Rocco doesn't look like a top tactician, but better well-rounded talent executing serve to make questionable decisions work out just fine. I'd love to see a team that six or seven base stealing threats and more power sprinkled through the lineup, but there hasn't been much development.

Yeah, the Twins' BP is rested because of the off day yesterday. They can't do it five days out of five, but they can get away with it for a lot of games. There was a comment earlier in the thread stating categorically that the Twins wouldn't make postseason. It would be fireable for Rocco to manage for 2026 now. He's trying to win today and believes Coulombe, Stewart, Sands, Varland and Durán have a better chance of winning than Woods Richardson pitching the sixth. I don't like it, but most managers do the same thing. So far, the Twins have really had good health in their bullpen especially considering the pitchers' injury history and the back end has been very good. Will they wear down in September? Maybe, but they need wins right now.

Walk and bloop single, but Sim is up to the challenge. This Cubs lineup looks every bit as good as any in MLB.
