I wouldn't be surprised to see Keaschall start a rehab pretty soon, but I think he will need a while to ramp up. If he had to break a bone, it's too bad it was his throwing arm because he hasn't been able to strengthen his arm after last year's TJ surgery.

I would dispute that the Twins have a better roster. The Rays have better team batting stats across the board and they lead the majors in stolen bases. When the Twins' starters are healthy, they might match up favorably with Tampa Bay, but with three guys out of the rotation, I think TB has better pitching as well.

If you can build a lineup like the 2019 Twins, then Bader could start 140 games, but the Twins haven't had anything resembling an elite lineup since 2021. I believe Bader leads the team in infield hits which has kept his offensive numbers in the plus range, but I doubt his offense is sustainable. Good speed and defense don't slump, so I don't mind him starting a majority of games, but that is a symptom that the club lacks talent.

Agree that there is value in having a good defender to play defense in the late innings. But Keirsey's struggles at the plate (I'm being kind) really negate his strengths.

I think the projection as a five-tool guy is why he has stayed as high on the prospect list as he has. He's still really young and there might be a real jump in his numbers in the next twelve months. The Twins definitely need more guys who can win games with their bat, glove and legs. They have carried far too many guys who are bat-first or bat-only.

When Lewis was on the IL, Brooks Lee was the youngest position player (24), and the second youngest was Wallner (27). That isn't much youth at all, even more than the number of pre-arb players would indicate. The Twins do need to get younger and faster if they want to compete.

He was wearing that brace when he hit over .300 last season. I think it is a chronic thing for him. Going back a long time, Greg Gagne had back issues which required constant maintenance for almost his entire career and it never overtly affected his career. Correa is only thirty, but it seems he hasn't aged well. The Twins look like they will be getting a diminishing player for the balance of his rich contract.

Nice to see Jenkins have a big game. I'm sure the Twins would like to see him dominate AA for a month and get a taste of AAA this season. His numbers are OK, but nothing that screams "superstar" so far.

I believe Martin is a better fit for this team than Keirsey Jr. He would get playing time, especially against left handed pitching and he is about the equal of Keirsey in base running. He's not the fielder that Keirsey is, but I think he can hit in the majors.

Are the Twins trying to send Emma a message. It seems they have slow-walked his rehab for what seems a minor injury.

Polanco has given the Mariners a 120 OPS+ this season, which isn't nothing. He's compiled .7 WAR. Topa has been a mild positive this year, nothing special. The WAR (which I think is unreliable for relief pitchers) is .2. Gonzalez will determine whether the trade is a success for the Twins.

Rays (Littell) vs Twins (Paddack): 7/4/25, 3:10pm
stringer bell replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
The Twins were under .500 at the All-Star break in 2023, the last time they made post-season. This year does feel entirely different, but there is time to be relevant if they start playing better. It really has to start now with a long homestand against good teams and the Pirates, who are currently playing their best ball of the season. After the next four series, it should be pretty evident whether the Twins should buy or sell (I’m betting “sell”). The collective slump of the hitters has been a puzzle. They aren’t great, but they are better than what they’ve produced for the last month. The rotation, featuring only one of their top starters needs to step up. Let’s go! I’m too old to watch this club rebuild. -
It will be interesting to see how SWR finishes the season. He was well over his previous innings ceiling last year and the long slog seemed to show in his performance. This year, especially with all of the 5-inning starts, he probably won’t exceed last year’s innings, and if he does, it wouldn’t be by much. BBRef puts him near average in just about every measure, no obvious strengths and no really glaring weaknesses. He, like almost every Twins pitcher is an extreme fly ball pitcher. Baseball Savant/Statcast isn’t so kind to SWR. There’s a lot of blue on his page. He’s a young guy who signed directly out of high school and I wonder if his development will mirror college arms. I like his demeanor and presence. I’m pulling for him to be a success with the Twins.

Simeon Woods Richardson will have less than two years of service time at the conclusion of 2025, so the Twins will be able to have him under team control until after the 2030 season. It could be argued that Woods Richardson's pitching saved the season early in 2024 when first Anthony DeSclafani and then Chris Paddack went out with season ending injuries. However, as the season went on, Sim became less and less effective. Still, his overall numbers for 2024 gave him the inside track for a rotation spot in 2025. The season didn't start well for Simeon and he was eventually optioned to St. Paul, but returned a few weeks later when Pablo López went on the Injured List. He's been mostly pretty good since returning. allowing only four earned runs in 21 innings in his last four starts. The manager hasn't allowed him to go deep in games, with three five innings starts and one start of six innings. Woods Richardson's metrics seem to indicate he is more like a fifth starter, with middling numbers in exit velocity, ground ball and hard hit rate and swing and miss numbers. Woods Richardson has so-so velocity with no dominant pitch, so his profile seems to point to a back-end starter. It would appear that SWR will be in the Twins' rotation at least until two or three of the injured guys are healthy and probably for the rest of the year. I would remind everyone that he is only 24 years old, younger than either Zebby Matthews and David Festa. Also, having a durable guy filing the back end of the rotation has value. What is the opinion of Twins Daily readers about Simeon Woods Richardson? Will he remain in the rotation long term? Is there a chance that he can become a top starter? Will he ever routinely work deep into games? Should he be traded and guys with more upside get a chance with the Twins?

Good pitch, but Lee was too aggressive early in the at-bat. -

Nice play Brooks. There haven't been many highlights so far, but that was a fine play. -

No offense to @Sjoski but I am sick to death of references to position players pitching like that is important. I get that it is low-hanging fruit to ridicule the team getting beat soundly. The last guy on the bench gets to lob balls in lost cause games. It didn't add to his value and keep him on the roster.Any club could take a guy out of the stands to do the same thing and all clubs do it when they are getting clobbered. -
It is a long, long season and every team is going to look dead on occasion. The Twins have had more than their share of lifeless games to be sure. However, one game isn't indicative of a full season and it isn't in itself a death sentence for the season for our favorite team. That we've seen far too many flat efforts by the hitters is much more damning to me. Getting dominated by Skubal has happened to most of MLB. I don't have much hope that they'll be able to come out of their June swoon, but it's not impossible. Skubal's domination is another data point.

I agree with the OP to a large degree. Lee is serviceable at second, short and third and is Correa's primary backup--a key fact that gives him lots of rope as far as staying with the major league team. This year and going forward, I think his role is that of a full-time player, but not confined to one position, similar to Castro's utilization last year, but without outfield play. If he continues to hit at an above-average rate, he may become a full-time regular at one position and an injury to might give him a full-time spot somewhere on the dirt. I would consider Lee serviceable at all three positions, but not above average. He has pretty sparse experience at second and third and most of it has been with the Twins. He's pretty smooth despite the lack of experience, but I do believe that more than most, he takes bad at-bats and previous defensive mistakes with him in the field. More experience might help with that problem. I have also noted that Lee is more than three years younger than any other position player and perhaps that shows in inconsistency. Lee's lack of foot speed probably makes his defensive ceiling pretty low, but that doesn't make him capable. A capable defender at the three positions who switch hits and hits at an above average rate is an asset and if Lee improves beyond his performance this year, he can become even more of a mainstay.

Royce Lewis is in the Twins’ starting lineup at Miami. There was an active roster vacancy once Jonah Bride was DFA’d.

The injuries suffered by top prospects Rodriguez and Jenkins make this a tough call. Both players' progress has been slowed and it harder (at least for the fans) to know when and if they will be ready to step in. I'd love to see both guys come in and be complete ballplayers better than the incumbents, but it is pretty hard to believe that will happen. It would then be easier to sell on either or both Larnach and Wallner. Larnach has put together a solid half season while Wallner has had stretches in each of the last two years where he has hit at an All-Star level, but he hasn't put that together long enough not to ignore the dry spells. It would be nice to have speedier, more athletic corner OFs who could be assets on the base paths.

The Twins offense improved to 4.6 runs per game in the month of June. If they had sustained that average for the entire season, they would easily be in the top half of runs scored in all of MLB. However the Twins allowed over 6 runs per game in the month ending today. Worst in MLB, the most runs ever allowed by a Twins team in June and their record was 9-18. Run prevention is the most glaring need right now, not offensive production. As far as the WAR of Twins' position players, outside of Byron Buxton, the team doesn't have many, if any, players who should be considered full-time regulars. Carlos Correa has that resumé and was a great player when healthy as recently as last year. The other guys are either unproven or just not that good--role players or second division regulars.

If the IL is an option, Ober should go on it. If the IL clears up the hip problem, a longish rehab might be in order. The numbers are not pretty. He is 68th of 71 qualified pitchers in ERA, third in MLB in hits allowed, fifth in runs allowed and third in home runs allowed. He looked to be fine a month ago, but he has collapsed. I can think of several Twins pitchers who were effective and lost it, never to be close to what they once were--Nick Blackburn, Joe Mays, Carlos Silva, MIke Smithson to name a few--hopefully this isn't the same thing for Ober.
