Toronto is not starting Gausman against Tampa. I suspect they don't see much advantage to finishing with a #5 seed and facing Tampa Bay for three more games after finishing the season against them.
mlbtradesrumors.com reported that Cano will be the primary closer for the Oriole postseason. He's had a great year, but I doubt he'll be an perennial All-Star.
As I understand it, quite a number of players stayed back, including Buxton, Correa and Lewis, as well as Gallo, Gordon and Alcalá. I don’t know if any of the non-injured pitchers on the 40-man are in Minneapolis, Denver or headed home.
Correa is a lock to be activated, it seems likely that Lewis will, too. Adding two back from the injured list makes it 30 players, so four would have to be subtracted—two or three pitchers and one or two position players.
I hereby award Max Kepler the Twins’ hitting Triple Crown. Kepler will lead the club in homers and RBI and while just short of the required 502 plate appearances, would lead the club in batting average using the criteria that MLB uses to determine if a player qualifies for the batting championship.
The Twins have been the least streaky team in MLB. They had one five-game winning streak and one five-game losing streak. Even when they've been playing well or playing poorly, they have found a way to win when in a snag or lose when on a roll.
I think Maeda has been the more effective pitcher lately (between Ryan and Maeda), but he has some experience in the bullpen and probably would be more valuable than Ryan in that role. The decision apparently has been made and the Twins have more information than the fans.
That is not the company line. Lewis claimed it was a nagging foot injury that made him come up lame running out the DP grounder. It may or may not be the whole story, but this is what has been reported.
Jorge López was DFAed by the Orioles. He pitched for three playoff teams this year and couldn’t stick with any of them.
There is talent there, but so far he’s only been able to harness it for half a season. One of our frequent posters is acquainted with him and says he’s a good guy, so best wishes to him.
I have Stevenson on the playoff roster regardless of whether Buxton is activated. 15 position players—Jeffers, Vázquez, Kirilloff, Solano, Polanco, Julien, Correa, Farmer, Lewis, Castro, Wallner, Taylor, Kepler, Stevenson and Luplow/Buxton.
I'll give them credit for making good pitching decisions at the deadline. I rather see Tommy Pham or Mark Canha playing left field than Jordan Luplow and the cost for those two guys wasn't much.
Alcalá hasn't been consistently effective. I think the Twins will consider a non-tender of him after the season is over. That said, there is enough stuff there for him to put it together and be a really good bullpen arm. I just wouldn't trust that in this postseason.
Two things--I think it is still open whether the Twins go with 14 or 15 position players. If they go with 15, the eight-man bullpen will probably come down to a decision between Funderburk and Paddack. I have a slight preference for Paddack over Funderburk. I don't see any opponents as particularly heavy on left handed hitters and Funderburk has pitched very well except for his penchant of allowing the first batter he faces to reach base, which could be huge in a high-pressure postseason appearance. Funderburk doesn't throw any harder than Thielbar, but he's got enough pitches to to be effective.
If Paddack has a successful outing tonight or tomorrow, I'd roll the dice with him.
