  1. I acutally think Hughes and Joba are worth taking a flier on (in the offseason). Playing in the spotlight can be so emotionally exhausting and wear a guy down. The change of scenery could mean more to players leaving New York than it would for any other city. The potential is there for both of these guys (compared to guys like Correia, Hendriks, Hernandez, De Vries, any of our other AAAA pitchers). Target Field and getting out of the NY pressure cooker could be all either one of them need to succeed. Just my 2 cents.
  2. With all due respect to the guy that suggested Pedro Hernandez...boo! Twins fans are looking for upgrades and Hernandez is Brian Duensing 2.0!
  3. Sano doesn't even have to be on the 40 man roster until after the 2014 season. I doubt that the Twins will rush him, especially when he is showing that he isn't ready.
  4. Aaron Hicks will be fine. It's his first time through the league and its time for him to make adjustments. I think Bruno will get Hicks swinging better and better as the season progresses. ALthough, I have always wanted to see better L/R splits.
  5. I posted this in the Perkins thread as well, but what about SS Alen Hanson (BA #61) and James Tallion (BA#19) for Perkins. Get a high upside arm and a middle infielder? Can you ever have too many of either?
  6. Would a package from the Pirates consisting of a very good SS prospect in Alen Hanson (Baseball America #61) and SP James Taillon (BA #19) be enough to pry Perkins away?
  7. Perkins being an inexpensive and great closer not only makes him a VERY tradeable commodity, but it opens the bidding up to all teams. Small market teams can afford him because he is cheap. I would think a team (this is only an example) like the Indians that are in contention this year and have an awesome SS prospect in Francisco Lindor would be a prime example (they and we would never trade within the division). But getting an inexpensive closer such as Perkins makes him even more attractive to a small market team. If Cleveland put Lindor on the table would you trade Perkins to a divisional foe?
  8. It's likely this has been covered in the past few months leading up to the draft so feel free to point me in that direction if so. My question is as to why the Twins 2012 draft strategy was to acquire relief pitchers and then try and convert them to starters. Is this part of a "we want low mileage arms" type of philosophy? Or did the Twins just really like the arms that these guys had and thought they projected very well as starters?
  9. I agree with you on those three but I would throw in Rosario as well. Having a middle infielder with a bat like his is so hard to come by that I would need to throw him on that list too. Kohl Stewart can't be traded yet either, but he's on my can't touch list.
  10. I could see guys like Vargas, Harrison or Adam Walker in the 1B/DH discussion. All have impressive bats.
  11. Buxton will finish the year at Ft. Myers and start 2014 in AA.
  12. @Shane - You nailed it. "The trades were the correct trades to make. I don't see how anyone could have predicted Worley to be this damn terrible." If Worley was pitching like the Worley we all thought we were getting, the Twins could possibly .500 right now. He has been that terrible. Injuries happen, the next guy has to step up.
  13. As crazy as Guillen can be (and he's a lot crazy), he would be a guy that I would approve of. I don't even know why, but he seems like a guy that could jump start our organization with some energy. If only he learned to say, "Earmuffs!" before pressers.
  14. I GREATLY hope Sano can be a June call-up in 2014. Hopefuly he can keep it up at AA and stay around .320/.380/.580. Those are still ridiculous #'s and possibly too unlikely, but I wouldn't put it past him. Sano is the one guy that I actually think the Twins will hold him back based on Super 2 status. If he comes up next year in early-to-mid June, he will be only 21 years old and get to keep him through 2020. Buxton could also be ready to make his debut in September as well and both could be in the starting lineup come 2015!
  15. I believe it was approximately 3 weeks to a month ago a reporter asked this same question to Gardy during post-game stuff on FSN, regarding the increase in strikeouts for Mauer. His response (paraphrasing) was it was an organizational decision for Mauer to be more aggressive driving the ball. He said that this team needs Joe to have more XBH to be successful. He also mentioned that Mauer is going to be more aggressive on the first pitch. Hopefully one of TD's statheads can look into the first pitch swinging frequency to support Gardy's claim.
  16. The pool of money only applies to the first 10 rounds, correct? If the "unsignable" guys are still available do the Twins (and others) start looking at them again to pay them what they want?
  17. If you go to Indy ball, you still are subject to the draft the following year. I believe he would have to go undrafted to become a FA.
  18. Aaron Hicks is a rookie! For the love of all that is holy, take a breath people. Give him some time to figure these things out. Its not like he is going anywhere anytime soon.
  19. I agree with this as well. We get so involved with Fangraphs and BRef and all the advance stats, but there are so many variables as well. Hicks is a year closer to showing his potential (or lack thereof), we'll no more about Plouffe, Florimon, Parmalee and others. Wins and losses are what matters and having an opportunity in the postseason. Who cares if the stats say the Orioles weren't as good as they were last year. They made the playoffs and had a CHANCE. This year I want as a fan to see improvement in the eyeball test, because I watch the games with my eyes and the product means more watching improvement than just seeing it on a sheet of paper.
  20. Imagine a 2016 starting lineup of... CF - Byron Buxton ® C - Joe Mauer (L) 3B/1B - Miguel Sano ® LF - Oswaldo Arcia (L) 1B/3B - Kris Bryant ® DH - Kenny Vargas (L) RF - Aaron Hicks (S) 2B - Eddie Rosario (L) SS - Santana, Goodrum, Polanco or a rotation of... 1. Alex Meyer 2. Kyle Gibson 3. Trevor May 4. Alex Wimmers 5a. Jose Berrios 5b. Kohl Stewart (called up in June) I like the bat. I can't wait till 2016 to see a HS pitcher.
  21. I have heard the opposite, actually. Appel's mechanics are regarded as flawless and has two plus pitches and two other that are considered above average. Gray has a better fastball and maybe more upside due to that, but definitely not "safer."
  22. I think that the "Twins Way" is to turn their prospects and players into Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau types. Hit lots of doubles and a few homers but mostly drive the ball to the opposite field gaps. Guys like Willingham and Thome had such a tremendous tool (Power) that the tinkering wasn't done. When you get a guys like Carlos Gomez and David Ortiz and completely ty to "fix" them versus balance his strengths with his areas of development, you will get an unhappy player that struggles to produce. A lot of this IMO is on Gardy. Having coached college (DIII) and HS basketball for 9 years, players function best when they have clearly defined roles. Putting players in positions of strength is important for them psychologically and from a production standpoint. Square peg meet round hole doesn't work. If tweaks need to be made, there needs to be CLEAR understanding that this can be a process (half season, full-season, longer) but that the end result is best for EVERYONE. The player has to buy in too. Sorry for the rant.
