  1. Can a guy get picked in the Rule 5 twice? I would think yes. / in which case does it become Rule 10?
  2. These have been some Big Games indeed. Yuuuuge!
  3. Nice to show up late and see the win is already in the bag.
  4. Abad's last 20 batters faced certainly have been out of kilter with the rest of his season. Maybe it's the start of a new trend, I don't know. It just seemed unfair to single him out. The page I linked to shows just how bad some of the other guys have been.
  5. Except for brief periods of time when he suddenly doesn't.
  6. Big George Benson, the obscure blues guitarist who I just made up?
  7. He's been a bit unlucky since moving to the White Sox. Sure, the ERA is a bloated 21.81. But the FIP of 12.60 suggests better days ahead...
  8. Living The Dream!
  9. I expect out-house results if that is the decision.
  10. We use ERA for starting pitchers because runs are the name of the game. For batters we can't assign runs so neatly, thus stats like OPS (or more sophisticated ones) serve us well as a proxy for runs. For relief pitchers, I see no reason not to rely on OPS too, at least for initial analysis. League OPS right now is .741. The Twins team OPS on defense is an unsightly .825 (Oakland is second worst at .771). Only three pitchers on the staff have amassed an OPS below .741: Tonkin (.720), Pressly (.679), Abad (.583), and Boshers (.419). As relievers, all reflect Small Sample Size, so any stat is prone to a sudden swing. But these four guys are not the problem, and Abad in particular (who I will admit I was lukewarm about bothering to sign to that minor league contract) has done his job. You can look at the culprits by searching for "OPS" here: http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIN/2016-pitching.shtml
  11. An Internet "first". Congrats.
  12. The rightness or wrongness of the forecast doesn't change the bigger picture that someone wanted to let the writer know that he was right and others in the FO were wrong. I don't see that kind of whisper make it to print very often, but maybe it's more common than I remember.
  13. We can agree on this, if nothing else. "Solid... starting catcher" is a pretty high bar for any prospect. Right now I forecast him as under 700 OPS at the major league level, which means even if he is at some point installed as a starter there will be constant searching for someone better to take over. In this view, he might manage one "solid" season, above .700 OPS and good defense, where everyone relaxes and enjoys his contributions, if EVERYTHING breaks right for him and his team. I'm mainly just taking the more cautious position. I hope your bet proves the winning one. / edit - and yeah, I undersold my opinion of him when I phrased it more tersely as "doesn't add up to a great shot at a starting role". Odds against, but not a super longshot.
  14. I did read the article so I suppose this disqualifies me from commenting.
  15. PS, it was nice knowing you, Platoon.
  16. Late to this discussion. What I found more interesting in Souhan's article was there is finger-pointing in the clubhouse, andthere is blame-shifting in the front office. The former is not really news, as I recall there being rumblings of players being unhappy with one teammate or another before. Actually I thought Hughes had been one of the finger-pointers, but obviously not in this case. The latter is IMO new. Now, during any off-season, probably every player except ones with no-trade clauses are at least open for internal discussion of trade. So it can't be a shock if trading Perkins was on the table. Nevertheless someone in the FO wanted Souhan to know that he was in favor, and to me that smacks of open dissension, and/or jockeying to retain jobs in the coming housecleaning. Maybe this was already discussed in the lengthy thread here and I overlooked it.
  17. Wow! Considering this comment came way back early in the game, this prognostication is predictively prescient. HOW did you KNOW?
  18. The Yankees hold on to win. I bet they were nervous, too.
  19. I'll go along with the other points, but an assemblage of poor defensive OF is no (ahem) defense of Arcia.
  20. We're just four players away. Eddie Feigner - the King and his Court.
  21. This Day In Twins History (Yesterday Edition): June 17 2015, ineffective relief pitcher Tim Stauffer given his unconditional release by the Twins. So, there's hope!
  22. Pressly's pretty much the only arrow in the quiver at this point, with strikeouts needed.
