  1. That's kind of a lot of qualifiers for such a short sentence.
  2. Approves: Meanwhile I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords.
  3. Which gets at one of the reasons I don't get too wound up about RISP numbers.
  4. In most endeavors .342 is a poor average. Only in baseball and bar pickup lines is it remarkably good.
  5. I wonder that too when I watch him run down the first base line. Sometimes a gamer can get the opposite reputation with fans if he plays hurt and doesn't broadcast it.
  6. It can be looked up. This year in 51 PA with runners in scoring position and two out, he's batting .342 with power for a 1.141 OPS. But don't let that get in the way of a good rant.
  7. Carnac: "Superior, Wisconsin." Ed: Superior, Wisconsin. Carnac: Superior, Wisconsin. Ed: That is the answer to the question found in the envelope you are holding? Carnac: You catch on faster than Burt Reynolds buying drinks for Loni Anderson. Ed: No one could aspire to that kind of speed, mental or otherwise. Carnac: No one? Ed: WIth the exception of yourself, of course. Carnac: You are too kind. Correct, but kind. Ed: We all are awed by your presence. Carnac: Really? That's it? No veiled gibe? This is unexpected. Ed: Simple as that. Carnac: May the fleas of a thousand camels leave you alone this once. Ed: Thank you, Your Magnificence. Would you be so kind as to open the envelope? Carnac: "What city is ranked nationally just behind Inferior, Minnesota?"
  8. I wasn't contradicting your meaning, merely offering a possibly-interesting meaning from baseball's distant past.
  9. 150 years ago "muffin" had a specific baseball meaning, and not a complimentary one. It meant the player just wasn't very good.
  10. http://hot.tgbus.com/news034/images/pic/enter_01.jpg These are all interesting and creative, but I looked it up and the name is spelled Slegers. (He's my Adopt-A-Prospect, and I gotta stick up for him.)
  11. Colon may be even older than we realized. From Dozier's postgame interview: "I faced Bartolo five or six years ago when he was probably 96...".
  12. In addition to noting his age, it's also well to consider that Rortvedt's stats include a horrendous start to the season. The numbers all count, of course, but when evaluating a prospect I think you want to check whether he's moving in the right direction. Since mid-May, he's posted a very presentable .267 BA with a little bit of pop and selectivity, leading to an OPS just north of .700. He's not tearing the cover off the ball, but a promotion next year to high-A would not surprise me. He's been pushed because of good reviews behind the plate, I'm pretty certain. The way he flailed around in April was not pretty. But it's debatable, given how he's going now, whether he would have been better served by hitting, say, .300 at E-town.

  14. Don't anybody else move there - the place is apparently overcrowded! (Unless maybe 10% live in La Jolla.)
  15. Tucking away this quote for reference later on... Competing for a wild card was always a will o' the wisp in my book. These deadline moves are appropriate, in that same book. The Garcia trades were educational, in that the fungibility of rental talent should be made use of more often. Though, there is probably a limit as to how early the Braves could have been pushed to trade him for just one far-away prospect.
  16. Slegers is my Adopt-A-Prospect and I couldn't be more encouraged by his progress this season. He seems a lock for a September look-see, and depending on how the big club navigates the trade winds he could get the call sometime in August maybe.

  18. A left-handed Rich Harden with that Bugs Bunny change? A fan can dream.
  19. For reference, that prospect's name is Ynoa. Pronunciation: \ee-know-uh\ from b-ref.com, in case that helps remember. It detracts from credibility to keep misspelling the name of the guy you are touting.
  20. That required some googling as I didn't recognize either half of this play on words. Kudos.
  21. Lazy. If you had driven even a mile further you could have avoided the whole debacle. PS. You should consider alerting Paul Molitor when you will be attending a Twins game. He needs to know because you have not exactly been a good luck charm for Rogers.
