  1. Rocco deserves Manager Of The Year consideration for bringing this pitching staff to 101 wins. His strategies worked in the regular season, shielding the weak spots except against weak opposition, when the strong opposition also is feeling their way through to an extent, but in the post-season he just doesn't have the horses to compete. That's my takeaway from the game. In an era when no one pitches complete games, you have to keep bringing in new arms, and with this staff it's Russian roulette - eventually you reach a chamber with a projectile and propellant, and we have several loaded chambers among our 12.
  2. We have a game thread going. Let's not spread our comments out. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/35161-playoff-game-thread-twins-new-york-607-pm-cdt-1042019/
  3. We'll try to remember plenty of Circus Boy Updates.
  4. Would've, in the sense we miss him. But not as a potential choice for this post-season - he's been on the 60-day DL for a while now (though not 60 days ) and will not play until next season.
  5. What you say can apply to any of the relievers, but I have to concur. Trevor needs to turn off the brain, and let Lurch come out. Get the signal from the catcher, rear back and hit the mitt, and let his stuff do its job en route. A little stomping around the mound between pitches is a plus, as long as he's not stalling.
  6. I'm glad this got sorted out. But let's please leave the personal edge off of the sarcasm. Other readers may misunderstand.
  7. Agreed, but it's in some ways even simpler than that. During the long season the manager and pitching coach make compromises between winning an individual game versus conserving the arms. This is the time of year they've been saving for. We want the maximum number of effective innings, and Odorizzi and Berrios represent our best chances for getting them. If it doesn't work, then the braintrust goes to Plan B, but the easiest path to a title involves these two guys pulling a heavy load. If they are making their pitches, then leave them in, even if the results don't match up. At least, for longer than for anyone else on the staff.
  8. I was counting on none of Gibson, Adrianza, and Kepler, due to health. Gibson bounces Perez, Adrianza in for Astudillo, and Kepler replaces Wade, going by the handicapping I had done a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps Perez expressed less willingness to pitch from the bullpen than Gibson did. These are things we can't know, that go into the final roster spot decisions.
  9. "Area man poses as RandBalls Stu, finds out satire is more difficult than it looks."
  10. I think there is a high chance of either Berrios or Odorizzi giving up early runs, but I also trust them to bear down and put that behind them. If their stuff is good, I hope the manager doesn't give either of them the early hook. But you can't afford to be down 6-0 in the third inning either. The hook does have to be quicker than in the regular season. The good news, if any, is that an early shower could mean a second chance sooner in the same series.
  11. Like most offenses, ours is prone to periods of silence, and that's what I'm worried about in this series, that we make their competent pitchers look better than just that.
  12. I suppose some kind of fancy artificial intelligence robot could curate the discussion threads of most interest to you. As it is, the default is to show you the threads with the most recent comments, but there is a black bar near the top of each forum that lets you sort by other criteria ("Start Date", "Most Replies", "Most Viewed," or even "Custom") if that fits your needs better than "Recently Updated."
  13. If you aren't available for the Yankees series as a result, we'll miss you.
  14. Flavorless, even in aerosol form.
  15. Best day as a Twins fan in a long, long time!
  16. "Your Honor, the Twins hazed me and physically abused me when I was with them. I want to go to the Giants. They don't beat anybody."
  17. And they will be turned down. Short of malfeasance by the Giants being uncovered, such a transaction would open a huge can of worms for the league going forward. Players go to a new team under what I once heard (regarding a used car I bought) called a Texas Guarantee : if Dyson breaks in half after the transaction is complete, we get to keep both pieces.
  18. Ceiling: Perennial All-Star Floor: Jim Hoey or less Guys like that keep getting chances, because every organization figures, what if you could cut down the walks? But the guy isn't walking batters on purpose, so it's a major project. Chalmers is a guy to watch, no question.
  19. In mid-season trades, the teams exchange medical reports. Trades aren't contingent on a medical exam, unless there is a known problem.
  20. I don't want Perez either, but when I combed through our 40-man, he wound up as the 12th man I added to my playoff pitching staff anyway, for severe lack of competent alternatives. The front office tried 30 pitchers over the course of the season, so I don't think some diamond was left in the minor league sand, untried
  21. I know, but then my next choice (before reading this article) for the final spot is Thorpe, and he brings even less to the table. All the righties in the remainder bin are going to serve up meatballs to batters from either side of the plate, I am afraid.
  22. Can a RandBall's Stu satire piece be far behind?
