  1. I guess the instinct to reach out with the meat hand is hard to coach out of a pitcher.
  2. I can't even begin to express how much I agree with this. I've said that Mastro can be a starting CF, on a last place team, or a 4th outfielder, on a good one. His quote re-states this in not quite the same words. Remarkable self-awareness.
  3. I think a successful season will be marked in part by a few more wins, but more importantly that pieces of a winning 2015 squad will become visible. Hicks having a solid rookie season in CF for example. Parmelee breaking out. Dozier breaking out. Escobar breaking out. A mid-season rookie promotion panning out. One of the pitching acquisitions doing so well that a contract extension seems right. Oh, one other criterion for success is to stop the decline in home attendance, because that's harmful to the long term success as well; you can't foster a successful franchise with a fanbase full of front-runners.
  4. I don't know why people say this. He could prove he has a third pitch; that might require time in the minors to perfect, for example.
  5. It's hawt.
  6. Sounds Veeckian. MLB is a little too buttoned-down for that even if a Veeck were on the scene. But maybe he'll take the idea and run with it for his Saints. Welcome, Dan.
  7. I'm assuming this is at least in part a response to my "salt in the wound" comment, and just to clarify, the "wound" in this case is the whole Delmon saga, and I recognize that he turned in at least one passably strong year for the Twins during his reign (of mostly terror). I don't think another GM could have gotten more, and the "salt" is just that whatever was gotten at the time, it now turns out to be less.
  8. It's not that they don't belong on a 40-man roster somewhere, it's that twenty of them would be the final two or three on most rosters.
  9. Yes, this idea is intriguing to me and I also wish to subscribe to the newsletter.
  10. Sure, but the issue of team control still will have a bearing on the nature of that contract. Remember the "team friendly" contract Denard Span still has? He spent the first month of 2008 in AAA. Can't prove cause-and-effect from just that, but it's a factor.
  11. He is pointing out that if a pitcher is really really good, such as Grienke, he gets signed at something like market value. If he's not very good, such as Blanton or Correia, he gets signed signed at something like market value (lower of course). If a pitcher happens to be just good enough to be above the threshold in the CBA, he's not signed for anything close to market value. This seems like good enough reason to take another look at this aspect of the CBA. I don't see why that's whining. And it's not especially good for baseball to have one of its competent pitchers sitting out part of the season just because of a discontinuity such that the penalty for signing him takes away that much from his market value.
  12. That's a douche; similar but not quite the same.
  13. Who is the fattest middle-infielder you ever saw play? Kent Hrbek goofing around at SS during BP mid-1990s does not count.
  14. With Rams and Nelson, I guess the lesson is that repeating high-A and not excelling the second time does not do wonders for your resume. With the other two, it's not clear to me from their record that they had proved they could not develop - and the clock wasn't running out for them, e.g. having to be added to the 40-man, was it?
  15. So the dumping of Delmon comes down to just Oliveros after all. Just a little more salt rubbed in the wound.
  16. That is a really good and succinct explanation of the Deduno Dilemma. All us armchair GMs need to see things through Ryan's eyes, and this is such an instance.
  17. Yeah, collusion worked out so well for the owners the last time they got caught at it.
  18. I honestly expected to find a one-line analysis for this position. You did find some worthwhile things to say.
  19. Can he succeed as a two-pitch starter, regardless of whether the curve or the slider is number two? What is the process for coaching in the minors that stamped him as ready for a trial as a starter in the majors? Seems like inmates running the asylum, with no one telling this prospect, "look, I don't care that you are getting these AA guys out, you have to develop your change-up [or whatever pitch seems called for] so you can throw it for strikes even when behind the count, or you're not moving up next season. And then you'll be stuck with looking at my ugly face telling you the same things for another year - is that what you want?"
  20. Mastro put up a 90 OPS+ at age 26, and he doesn't have any minor league track record of power to allow hope of a better future. He can be one of the better 4th outfielders in the league if he continues to improve, but a team making him a starter is probably not one destined for a winning record. Parmelee could well fizzle, but he's the only one with the upside that can be above average, and he needs to get that chance now.
  21. Jeff Jones has been Detroit's pitching coach since mid 2011, presuming this is who is meant by "the Tigers" and what they want. Maybe I expect too much of a coach to just come in and fix what's wrong with all his pitchers, but how much confidence should we have that this is the missing key for Porcello, versus whatever they have tried in the past couple of years already? 18 innings of Spring success seems like weak evidence to be trying to apply to another pitcher.
  22. Decadent. If it's meant as a takeoff on Bull Durham's line that strikeouts are both boring and fascist, it kind of misses the mark. But maybe Lenin or someone like him had some similar quote about decadence that makes it more apt than I know. Even without fully getting the joke, I love this piece of art.
  23. As a 22-year-old in AAA he looked like he might have a ceiling on offense like Pat Meares, with better defense. That's no all-star, but a far sight better than Florimon's ceiling which looks more like Chico Ruiz. His 2012 was bad, no doubt about it, but players have bad years and bounce back and he may have suffered from being moved around a lot. I think he's too young to say he sucks.
  24. At equivalent ages, Escobar's batting line has always been better than Florimon's, until last year. Escobar is younger and if 2012 was a fluke then he's still got the potential to be a better hitter than Florimon, and I would like to see him have the chance.
  25. You can be my, be my, be my Yoko Ono.
