  2. Vance has a real chance of sitting in a barcalounger at age 31 wondering what the heck happened to his career. I hope his future self can come back and tap him on the shoulder and give him some guidance.
  3. Just a quibble, but AA isn't quite as young a league as you make it out to be. Of the top 100 Eastern League batters (by plate appearances) in 2012, 5 were in their age-20 season or younger, and 4 more reached 21 in the season - maybe you meant 9% by "many". Even fewer when you look at the top 100 pitchers, I see 4 in their age-21 season, none younger. Someone posted age averages per league level a while back, but just eyeballing it the average EL age seems about 24. Yes, Colabello was old for the league, but not even the oldest.
  4. If this is key, then methinks you have been talked into going to the wrong doctors.
  5. I guess this explains the yearly "teh reading comprehension skillz need improving" comments on my report cards at school.
  6. What surprises me a little about Smith is that the Cardinals let him go after only 3 years, age 21-23, with a decent (not stellar) developmental year at the plate in double-A. Does the need to add a player to the 40-man roster kick in that early with a college player who apparently didn't finish school? I see he was charged with ten errors as a first baseman that last year, kind of shaky but not grotesque. If it wasn't simply a 40-man issue, then you have to think there is some other reason the Cards simply cut him and no one else in organized ball snapped him up, leaving him to play in the new American Association as a 24-year-old. Of course he didn't progress so that his age-25 season in double-A for Miami's team was mediocre; but I'm interested in what the Cardinals apparently saw two years earlier. They're a smart organization, and apparently knew to cut ties.
  7. It's been said elsewhere that often it is the best prospects who are the ones cut first, once it becomes clear that there's nothing they can do the rest of spring training to make the big club. The injury seems to be the trigger for that with Arcia.
  8. And just to be clear, the quote Puck chose is from Jeremy Affeldt, not Crasnick. That bumps the value of it up quite a bit (with no slight to Crasnick intended).
  9. I think MLB forced MiLB to upgrade a lot of their facilities, particularly at AAA, to minimal standards close to those of MLB parks. I'm not sure that is widely true at the low minors, though. Anybody got the dimensions of the Twins' farm system parks handy? This business of different balls is something that I'd enjoy Terry Ryan clearing the air about.
  10. > After adding Cecil Fielder in the offseason, their offense was only slightly above average Yeah, they blundered big-time by not signing Prince instead. Oh, and I'll take the under, just because there are more ways for things to go wrong than to go right. (Also, I think a few weeks ago I added up all the over/under numbers at someone's book and it was slightly more than the number of wins available, so on average I'd always take the under, and win except for the vig.) If things go really right, though, they reach 100. Like you say, that's why they put the o/u where they do.
  11. too short; did not read Simpler URL, btw: http://www.colderdarkerharder.com/new-stories-3/trevor-effing-plouffe/
  12. Considering Correia has yet to throw 200 innings in a season, and last year Deduno averaged 89 pitches per start which amounted to only just above 5 innings per start, I think you may have constructed a pretty safe bet for yourself in 2013-14 with that "if" clause, my brother.
  13. I saw this article while reading the thread about Guerra: Morneau returns from successful Classic stint | twinsbaseball.com: News "It was cool," Morneau said. "It was something I'll never forget for sure. Being in there with Joe back there catching, me hitting and Perkins pitching, it's not too often something like that happens with teammates facing each other in a big situation like that." I was at the game and was looking forward to this matchup. Morneau and Mauer chatted for five seconds before Joe took up his crouch, and I would give a nickel to know what pleasantries were exchanged. The fantasy is, "fastball, down the middle. After that we play for keeps." Sure enough, Justin smoked the first pitch to right field. I'm virtually certain no such Bull Durham dialog took place, but I enjoy the thought.
  14. There is a Delete button, under the Edit feature, FWIW. I use it frequently, though not on this reply.
  15. Although I basically agree, I suspect a reason to stay with the cheaper balls is that they don't fly as far. In minor league parks, you'll end up with stats that aren't representative when the players reach legitimate playing fields. I think this is a secondary issue to the raised stitches, but isn't nothing.
  16. Yes, I expect somebody expects to school the other one. I'd put my money on Mauer, but it would be great news if it came out something like a draw in this clash of titans.
  17. "You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike." / the THAC0 responders will have a better shot at this one
  18. Even the Sure Things end up being 50/50 for a lot of reasons that collectively add up.
  19. You've got me sold on Gray for the moment - it's gotta be a pitcher. But with so much time until the draft, and at #4, the Twins will be favored to pick a lot of different guys between now and then.
  20. Lord knows I work at the edges of the forum guideline for good taste now and then, but this one makes me wish there was an Un-like to click. Yeah, I know there's a "Report this" button - doesn't quite rise to the level of that, in this case. But yick, anyway.
  21. For Levi Michael? If he doesn't shine this year, he'll still get chances until he's 24 at least. As a first-rounder, he'll get the benefit of doubt a while longer.
  22. Somebody in the linked article estimated $3,000,000 per season for all of the minor leagues, to use the major league balls. Even though the minors in theory pay for their own expenses, they get do some subsidies (player salaries, at minimum), and this seems like small change in order to avoid the perpetual question of what the players would do when pitching and batting with regulation MLB ball.

  24. This. Apart from whether the two strikeouts in the Mexico game were questionable or not, Joe has a real "notion" up there at the plate, every time. As I mentioned in another thread, I was there in Phoenix last weekend, and one of our running jokes was "bet Mauer swings on the first pitch?" each time he was up. I can't remember if he ever crossed me up on that; and most times, he'd make the pitcher throw him one strike looking, sometimes two, before picking out something to take a good whack at. I sat there griping, when he'd look at a strike on 2-0, "this is *why* you work the count to 2-0, to get a pitch like that." And yet, he had a really good WBC first-round series, and more times than not he made a monkey out of me and my petty griping. Maybe the line-drive foul he sent one seat down and to the right of me was a message. At least, I wasn't "that guy" yelling Sterrr-roids! Cheeea-ter! to Braun in left field or when he was up to bat. By the second game, some lady a few rows down from him complained, and either he shut up or was escorted elsewhere, I don't know which.
