  1. He seems to be an entertainer on this new-fangled device called a television. I would look up more detail for you but my copy of the Internet is currently on loan to a friend.
  2. Having watched The Simpson's take on old-school pro wrestling last night, other grand entrances suggest themselves as part of the first-inning spectacle. Hipster Kevin Slowey being escorted to the mound by a bevy of horn-rimmed-glasses-wearing beauties, for example.
  3. Since many managers like to rest players instead of playing them several games in a row, particularly catcher, it's even possible that L-R-L-R plays into the opponent's hands, instead of tempting them to use the same platoon players several days. I realize that at most it's a second-order effect.
  4. It's not unimportant. But if a lefty is facing a lineup prepared to face a righty, chances are the team is down by several runs already. You don't want too many of those "opportunities" or your season is lost; and if you don't have many of those then the choice of who does this pitching is fairly low down on Ryan's honey-do list for Gardenhire in a given season.
  5. I think Eric Johnson was the guy that sold me the sno-cone at my last Twins game.
  6. Stay on the infield dirt. They get mad when you leave tire marks on their outfield grass. But, all seriousness aside, I didn't see anyone mention Thrylos's guide from a few weeks ago. Here is part 3, which contains links to parts 1 and 2.
  7. His b-r.com page shows a couple of innings as a 17-year old. Consistent with his pitching in youth leagues, but he's been a full time hitter for 8 seasons now.
  8. All these lists of Twins prospects are starting to look so similar in ranking that it doesn't seem there is much independent opinion being formed. Max Kepler being precisely #10 looks like an artifact of how these lists are constructed, for instance. That's probably natural at this early stage of the Spring when there is little to no new information, either statistically or scouting-wise. As soon as there is something new to consider, say an early-season slump by one of the 2012 draftees or a hot streak by an older prospect, these lists will become more worth reading again.
  9. I'm not a fan of adding up minor league numbers for young guys; it's a real apples-and-oranges problem with age and league level. But I agree that his minor league progression, up until last year's poor numbers in a short stint at Rochester, would be completely consistent with an eventual ability to hit at the major league level, well enough for a utility job and possibly just enough to hold down a position as a regular. I was lukewarm on his acquisition, but he's better than the usual minor league infield throw-in on a deal. But if he barely misses on such a projection, he is just another good glove in a world fairly full of them. He recently turned 24, so the next year or two become make-or-break.
  10. Thanks for the mental image I did not need.
  11. Cleansing wash video? Giggety. I wish I had an Internet connection so I could investigate this further.
  12. I'm virtually certain no one else cares or spent any time thinking more on this, but I asked a couple of knowledgeable people and they could point to no specific rule covering the case, but believe that any umpire would eject the batter and/or manager if they persisted in this kind of jackassery. So, to the person who wondered if this scenario was possible, the answer is basically no.
  13. And outstanding post #1677 from you, my brother.
  14. He's already knocking on the door of top-ten-prospect in a good minor league system, so I think he could honestly have a lost year in 2013 and still remain a prospect this time next year, though diminished in rank.
  15. All things considered, I bet Gardy and Ryan wish they could skip Opening Day and go right to game 2. Most years, even if the forecast for the season isn't that great, it's fun to put your best guy up against the other team's best guy that first day and just see what happens. This year, even if the Twins wind up winning, it's not really something to look forward to in its own right. Maybe a 5-1 win will prove satisfying, because that's baseball and it could happen, but it won't be like it would when you spend the days leading up to it in anticipation that Viola or Blyleven or whoever might dominate.
  16. This probably explains why I hit so well the year I separated my shoulder. Pro-tip for the Twins' trainers. / Truth in posting regulations require me to state that I never separated my shoulder and I never hit well.
  17. You were kind enough not to mention that on #1000 I typed "Hicks" when the subject line was for "Gibson". Guess that was one of the 153 (as if that number were really that low). If anybody achieves a percentage like that I would cease posting to avoid being embarrassed by comparison. (Actually, some do, yet I post anyway.)
  18. I like that the percentages add to 100. This gives me confidence in the team.
  19. Not sure what connection you're making there. If my kids were still at an impressionable age and raised a dinner-table conversation about what they had seen on TwinsDaily that day, I might caution them about the perils of alcohol addiction. I doubt my wife or I would warn our daughter about overdoing it with a product like Summer's Eve.
  20. I debated whether to bring this up, but maybe it's worth pointing to my 2012 Adopt-A-Prospect thread for Darin, which contains various nuggets like his transition from 2B to outfield: http://twinsdaily.com/adopt-prospect-2012/963-darin-mastroianni.html I did not update it after he was brought up, so your information about the outcome of his 2B experiment at Rochester is not found there.
  21. Maybe that's because the Twins have been pretty good at this aspect for a long time now, and the discussion is whether the team should deviate from that policy for Hicks.
  22. Even if you don't accept clutchness as an important factor in major league ball, WPA ought to be at worst about the same as Win Shares or VORP or WAR as a useful measure of a season's body of work, shouldn't it? It gets at the heart of what we want to measure as the value a player delivers to his team.
  23. I think we've looked at all angles of this question for so long that it is easy to forget that chances are the decision won't be a tough one when opening day approaches - external events may move a close decision to a near-obvious one, one direction or the other. I'm kind of done speculating for now.
