  1. > Welcome to the Internet. The comments here are tame compared to most. This is the argument I use when I work blue and get called on it, but I don't honestly expect it to hold sway.
  2. > And those overall numbers were dinged heavily by 52 terrible innings from Jeff Gray I won't do the research but I suspect most bullpens could locate 52 innings from one or two bottom of the barrel staff members to bolster their argument for a stronger year this year.
  3. > The defensive abilities may simply erode with age but Mauer’s hitting will never come under question. Doesn't part of what contributes to the defensive side also affect hitting? Bi-lateral leg weakness was something of a punchline, but corresponded to a poor offensive season, by his standards anyway. I'm not ready to separate the two issues quite as much as this quoted statement suggests.
  4. We discuss innings of spring baseball for others. I'm hardly on record advocating Correia's signing, and I'm not doing handsprings now over this game. But the stony silence when things go well for him ... I dunno, I just felt like pointing it out. We do root for him to do well for the team, right? That's more important to me than being right about the $10M looking like a subpar investment in the offseason.
  5. If there was any credit given to Correia for 5 good innings in that game, I missed it.
  6. He certainly had what it took to keep my college-age daughter's attention during his pregame warmups, several years ago.
  7. I need to know Reusse's take on this, before forming my own opinion.
  8. If this is true, I think as GM I would have spent more on somebody else and not staked all hopes on a rehab candidate more likely to "break" than "make". However I doubt anything ever comes down to something as simple as that, except for a very elite player in his prime.
  9. I have this feeling there would be a heavy trail of flop-sweat leading from the warmup mound to the pitching mound, regardless of which man they chose for this duty.
  10. I'll make sure not to sit with you at a game.
  11. Once you have the data in there, just a little facility with database management (which I don't have but fortunately b-r.com provides) multiplies the value about 1000X.
  12. He's done. Send him to the minors to work on a few things.
  13. With a rotation of Worley, Worely, Wroely, Vance, and Vanimal, names I have seen bandied about here and elsewhere, the Twins have a chance of having pretty good starting pitching.
  14. Burnett had a good minor league progression, and progress happened to stop when he was brought up to the majors in 2010, skipping AAA. And he did all right up through the middle of June, posting a 2.70 ERA. After that, he fell apart, got sent to AAA, was brought back up, and totaled a 11.30 major league ERA the rest of the way. Does anyone remember if something "happened" to him, like a nagging injury? Or did the league suddenly find out he sucked?
  15. A quick scan of the link Brad Swanson provided indicates the Cardinals have never had the 17th pick in the first round. Go figure. It's true, as old nurse point out, that gems like Halladay and Hamels have been found there. However, you get 100% of whatever Lohse has to give these next 3 years (which could include injury etc), versus about a one in ten chance of getting someone like that in the draft. Spending $33M for that, versus low cost if you hit the draft jackpot, it still seems like a deal with decent upside.
  16. > We set you up one when you registered. Somebody set up us the bomb. But all seriousness aside, John's post shames me a little. I had been thinking that the blog feature here was not really a success except for people already established. I got what I felt was little response in the early going last year, except if I posted in a forum. Recently, I tried again with a blog post, and got "only" two responses in the comments section. But John's point today mentioned getting 15-20 views in his early days, so I went back to look at my blog posting of a week ago. The stats counter shows 200+ readings. If I got only two comments, it's because what I wrote wasn't interesting enough. I'll have to step up my game - if it's actually something I want to invest more time in, that is, as I'm not sure I have the fire in the belly to do it - and that last observation probably explains more than anything else.
  17. But that's the point: now is the time *to* overpay. Not on years, but on money. You've spent the offseason making a couple of key trades for prospects, which won't pan out for a couple of years. You've got salary room due to attrition of other players. Now is the time to make offers of 2-year contracts to bridge to the next contending squad. If you have to overpay for those 2 years, well, what were you saving the money on the other deals (or cuts) for, anyway? I'm not saying to spend $150M. Just the $100M that was implied by the arguments for building Target Field.
  18. With 2013 being a transition year, I think the goal has to be to develop the guys who will be contributing to a contending 2015 squad. What better way to let a young center fielder blossom than to surround him with two slow guys, so that he can gain the final polishing of taking charge in a major league outfield on every ball hit his way, and be ready to continue to lead when better fielders surround him in two years?
  19. Escobar has a chance to be a table-setter. Which still is a lower ceiling than Dozier has. But a lot better than Florimon's, IMO.
  20. Taking in the 4-game strip of games in 3 days at the WBC in Phoenix, I quickly tired of seeing exactly the same sequence of the Dbacks' between-inning "events", even if I had tolerance for them in the beginning. Good news for you regarding the kiss cam: as the gay rights movement continues to make progress I expect teams will decide this "event" brings them grief whichever way they decide to continue with it.
  21. Who does a 75-win team give trouble to, except the GM and manager?
  22. I can't remember, has someone in charge (Gardy, Anderson, Ryan) said something to this effect? Seems to me he doesn't do what they tell him, namely mix in other pitches with his fastball, and/or develop something better than his slider. So they could easily say to him "go to the minors and prove you can do what we've been telling you, and not simply get AAA hitters out with a diet of fastballs".
  23. True contention isn't the only aim for 2013. They have been a 90+ loss team for two seasons, and a pipeline of young players is about to produce a contender in 2015 we hope. Use the money to bring some improvement in the record in 2013. What do you want them to do with the money instead? Pocket a windfall profit due to the team being bad? I'm not against free enterprise but MLB is not close to free enterprise at the team level, and paradoxes like this should be avoided IMO.
  24. Romero's salary isn't quite in Vernon Wells's league, but I have periodically wondered if a team could be so desperate to shed salary that they would package a high-pay guy with a real stud prospect, in exchange for a utility player deemed to have "some" value at the major league level, a defensive minded 3rd catcher say. Maybe you'd have to add a middling prospect on each side, to provide "cover" for the team doing the salary dump. The Twins have the salary room this year - would they pay $X million to acquire a really good prospect?
  25. To my knowledge the Twins have only one Meyer. :whacky028:
