  1. I like it. Two run lead, you don't have to send the guy a message that he'll be pinch-hit for every time this season. Let him go up there.
  2. And nice, confident use of the bullpen by Gardy. Nothing out of the ordinary. But he's good at telling his players "be ready for anything, but here's how I see your role." Not taking out Roenicke, and getting the clutch strikeout that set up the rest of the success, was key.
  3. Yeah, but by the time he gets to the majors he's facing batters who have seen a ton of guys who look like him and topped out at AAA.
  4. I could joke that if he's good enough to play every day he should be a starter, but actually I think he can be one of the better 4th outfielders in the league and such usage isn't ridiculous.
  5. I need to check with RiverBrian to determine whether Fielder has the wheels to upset this strategy.
  6. Can Mastro cover for two struggling outfielders at once?
  7. If the team can just win every series I predict they'll have a solid year.
  8. I'm putting my radio-listening road trip to Elko on hold, then.
  9. Depends on your definition of excited. Is anyone a lock for Cy Young? No. Does the prospect of a suddenly-watchable team loom on the horizon? That excites me.
  10. Given their respective ages, I'm fine with giving Florimon the first shot at the starting job, and I'd not be ready to pull the plug after three games. But to me Escobar is the one with greater promise in the long run, probably as a utility infielder but he could dial it up and win a starting job eventually. I see Florimon as being out of baseball in a couple of years if he can't make the most of this opportunity right now.
  11. But, so far, so good. The two relievers who haven't appeared are Pressly and Robertson, and I can see waiting for a lower-pressure situation to bring the former in and I can see having the latter be on a very short leash anyway. And, though it's reasonably standard now, I liked our closer being in the game for the top of the ninth even though down a run. It helped of course that the two starters didn't give him a reason to yank them in the fourth or fifth (although the first or second inning in the first game probably had him wondering).
  12. Mods, your mother is asking why I get hassled for such witticisms? [Offending quote deleted by glunn.] Moderator note -- This member has now been warned and if he does anything like this again he will be banned.
  13. How strong is their signal? I am getting some oldies station in Sacramento.
  14. +1, my brother.
  15. Wilkin Ramirez is on line 3, requesting a little love too.
  16. Comment on the ESPN site, apparently advice to Leyland: Don't Do Coke.
  17. So far, the bench seems to be working the way Gardy drew it up. Wilkin has batted twice for Florimon and gotten a hit once, and now Mastro got to second as the pinch runner for Hammer. Hasn't resulted in any wins (yet) but it's refreshing to be able to enjoy the moves.
  18. The guy that gives you 32 games of 1.14 WHIP and 2.57 ERA across 224 innings gets about $20M a year, so the math says we see that pitcher 1 game in 4.
  19. He's better than his numbers.
  20. Same lineup as Game 1, right? Looks like Gardy wants to go with a set middle infield, rather than by committee. Maybe he'll do a platoon split versus lefties?
  21. Doumit was DH'ing and Escobar seems to be the emergency third catcher. I wonder if this factored into not removing Escobar. This is hardly better than carrying a third catcher.
  22. This belongs in that other thread yesterday, but baseball is also the sport that I'll enjoy watching at just about any level of skill. Small-time HS football makes me cringe when a good runner just walks by a smaller defender and goes for an easy touchdown, likewise when a middle-school basketball center is a man among boys, but to me it's not unpleasant to watch a kid with a great fastball mow down his opponents, or to see a different kid launch a moonshot against a skinny pitcher who hasn't got facial hair yet. Fans of other sports will differ, naturally.
  23. From the standpoint of the team investing in the arm, you are probably right. From the perspective of the athlete, I suspect most would say they would accept *some* risk (which they will immediately discount to about zero) of permanent injury in exchange for a chance to finish the last inning of a perfecto. A few, the non-HOFers probably, might even say yes to a 100% certain end of the career in exchange for a 100% certain completion of their historic game. I think the manager has to balance these views, since the owner signs his paycheck but he has to have the respect of this players too.
  24. I'm waiting to see thepuck's take on this, before forming my own opinion.
  25. Great to see athletes not being immediately dismissive of this. I wonder who most influenced him, in accepting an analytic POV. I remember Glenn Gostick going over his hand-typed sheets of stats at the local SABR confab in the '80s. In every generation, there are always at least a few trying to do this. Maybe it's gaining more traction.
