  1. For similar reasons I do not wish to read any articles about the Wins Above Replacement for Correia.
  2. Not necessarily. This one's just a Bad Idea.
  3. But that's because it's not a choice between hanging KC out to dry in the 8th, versus putting in the reliever. IMO both those options can be criticized without it being second guessing. That's because it's almost standard practice to do what has already been suggested: Get Burton and Duensing up and warming up while the Twins are batting (if Duensing is not available that day, pick your best option for getting lefties out, maybe that's Burton anyway); Send Correia out there and tell him "go get 'em"; At the first baserunner, send in the correct-handed reliever; go from there. This is not rocket surgery - managers do it all the time. And it gives you the chance at the better of both worlds: if your mediocre starter is having one of the games of his life, he has a chance to finish his complete game shutout if he gives up no hits in the 8th (and maybe his team scores a few in the 9th to give him a better cushion for when he goes out for the bottom of that inning), and if his run of luck is up, it costs you only a baserunner (hopefully not a home run). I'm not saying I thought this through, as I watched the game unfold. But it's what Gardy is paid to have figured out ahead of time. And his explanations afterward continue to sound to me like a rationalization for something else going on under the surface.
  4. Someone in the organization is trying to prove a point. I hope it is Mauer.
  5. Or, as a practical matter, indistinguishable at this time. At least the middle infielders. Hicks is just due a day off, and Mastro is due a start.
  6. Yes, because colorless green ideas sleep furiously.
  7. The mods won't banninate you if you spell out Batting Practice.
  8. "Continue"? / Just funnin', my brother.
  9. If nothing else, he's probably learning to recognize that the "hey, where are all my teammates" feeling means he should find the nearest bus station and buy a ticket to Cedar Rapids.
  10. A crazy idea just occurred to me that can't possibly be true: is Gardenhire less than enthused about the talent Ryan obtained over the winter, and was today passive-aggressively saying in effect "OK, so this is my ace? Here's how you manage an ace."
  11. Yes, it is little reported that Eddie Gaedel is the only major league player ever to walk and strike out in the same plate appearance.
  12. Also left out of Gardy's explanation was the difference in a 3-0 lead and a 1-0 lead. Doesn't matter how good he has pitched so far, the #1 priority is to win the game and egos be damned. Warm up the lefty and the righty to start the 8th, send Kevin out there and then replace him the first time there's a base runner. Kevin's been around a while, he knows the drill; you just don't mess around when it's 1-0.
  13. Extraterrestrials. Do not forget extraterrestrials.
  14. I had the field condition in mind, which I would think would be kind of a bummer to come home to. Also, I don't know how completely a home team clears out its locker room when going on a road trip, but knowing another team will be moving in as you vacate seems like a downer too. I'm not saying they shouldn't be professional about it; just that it must seem like a weight was lifted for the guys who were returning to the team this season.
  15. We currently have motions on the floor specifying he enters the game at about 3 different points, and other motions on the floor to have him depart in 3 different points. On an open forum anyone can chime in, but this much cross talk was one of the reasons for my trepidation.
  16. And equally seriously, my suggestion to insert Carroll is guided by "go for the tie at home, but for the win when on the road". Too soon for the power hitter, but Carroll has the much better track record at getting that second runner on board, by hook or by crook. And he can then take over Dozier's fielding position if the bottom of the ninth comes to reality. I really like the current construction of the bench, given the choices coming out of Spring Training.
  17. I won't imply they aren't smart enough to get the joke, but they surely are not smart enough to be reading this august Forum.
  18. It's Chekov's Law, I think - not the Star Trek guy but the smart one. "A loaded gun on stage in the first act of a play should be fired in a later act; otherwise, the gun should not be shown in the first place." You've got these players in the dugout and the bullpen; if you lose without putting them all into the game then you should have made them pay for a ticket to watch the game.
  19. Carroll for Dozier for the OBP, and then Ramirez for Florimon, with Escobar to pinch run if the inning calls for it with the top of the lineup on deck, does have some appeal. Weighing against is a Tyler Roberton-like desire to "see what we've got" and hopefully build on some success if it occurs. Down 3-1 in the ninth, probably needing Hicks to come through and with very little chance Gardy pinch hits with Mastro in that situation, means the chances of winning are pretty low whichever way you roll those dice. / oops: Mastro already went in for the Hammer.
  20. Maybe Joe thought it would be bad baseball for a batter to swing with fewer than two strikes in this situation.
  21. +1. This. Ding. Ding. Freaking. Ding. +2.
  22. If there was a crooked number up there for the Twins then it wouldn't be as much of an issue. But as things are, yeah.
  23. A wild pitch and a single courtesy of Burton quells my impulse to second guess.
  24. The Carlton/Ryan comparisons may have been premature. Fire Ryan (ours).
  25. Other than "Pitchers' Duel" it has no meaning.
