  1. A guy who led the majors in on-base average probably should be a 90 at something. In response to another comment: I am about to turn 59 so I am waiting for the Books-on-8Track-Tape version of this game.
  2. Don't know what Florida law is like, but I would imagine if handicapped spots routinely fill, then they need to assign more, even if it ticks off people like me who have to trudge the distance across the road. As Chief said, even without the law it's just the right thing to do.
  3. 4 runs or less. He could keep the ERA down around 4.90 with that.
  4. Beer! Beer! I'll have to check the stores here and see whether Summit is available in Reno/Tahoe. If so, I'll give it a fair comparison to Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.
  5. > it is tough to draw a lot of conclusions from such a small sample size Without going back to check the scorebook, I believe the Canadian team faced a lot of left handed pitching. In the two games I got to watch, he went after a lot of first pitches, and just generally seemed confident in his approach (as much as a spectator down the third-base line can tell). I'm ready to say he's back. Which, usually, is the kiss of death.
  6. I was there in Phoenix for the game but my eyewitness account doesn't add anything. You peel the onion back layer by layer, and there is only more onion underneath: Tosoni takes a step toward the mound, after... being thrown at on three consecutive pitches, after... catcher Robinson bunts for a base hit, after... Robinson was bowled over on a no-slide play at the plate, after... various hard slides by the Canada team, after... who knows what The play at the plate where Robinson got knocked over was several innings earlier, and I don't remember any egregious slides at second or elsewhere but they were mentioned in one recounting of the tale. So it wasn't a completely linear chain of events, just a general sense of things being a little rough for a friendly game. Players being unclear on the tie-breaker played a significant role. But if Team Canada was looking to maximize their run-scoring in the top of the ninth, having a catcher bunt leadoff isn't the obvious strategy I would try, so I think there still is a gray area. I would love to buy one of the participants a few drinks and get more of the real back-story, but I suspect these details will remain with the players themselves. By the time interviews occurred, the players were well-rehearsed. "I lost it... I lost it... I lost it." Hope he finds it.
  7. I am glad to see the posting guidelines being put to good use, my brother. Apart from that, I mostly echo ND-Fan's sentiments. I'm totally on board with the offseason trades that temporarily weaken the team, but am disappointed that this wasn't done hand-in-hand with some short-term moves to serve as a bridge to 2015 and beyond. As I understand the marketing of how Target Field came to be, there is a moral commitment to spend like a major league team if it can help put a better product on the field, and it seems to me $20M was left on the table, or in ownership's pockets more like, all while they told us that money is not the constraining factor. More money could have obtained the services for two years of a pitcher with a better track record than Correia for example. I fear that there is a conscious calculation that the team would rather have one more kick-ass draft pick in June '14 than to strive for a few more wins to come closer to .500 in '13; it's not exactly throwing games, but close enough that I don't like the implication that you can't succeed long-term without shenanigans.
  8. Only for the purpose of embarrassing the Twins.
  9. My point is that Escobar is not off to a good start at bat, his glove is a given and they apparently would rather watch a veteran like Olmedo in the field than him. They're straining to give Escobar some more live at-bats to prove himself, and DHing him could be a little reminder that his bat is what will decide his fate.
  10. Start at AA again, move up to AAA mid-season if he has demonstrated improved command.
  11. It's still early March but it's time for Benson to go about 3-5 I'd say, hopefully at least one of them against this quality righty. Oh, and Escobar DH'ing. Not that there was any doubt what will decide whether he makes the final cut, but this spells it out plainly.
  12. You can have a battle without it being against full-strength competition. Coaches and other talent evaluators look for signs of good and repeatable mechanics, they evaluate pitches based on what a better batter might or might not have done against it, they give leeway if a pitch the pitcher is still working on and will be put aside is what got hammered, etc. Add to that the Small Sample Size that the spring always represents, and it's fair to say that the spring battle exists and the results are not pre-ordained yet is decided by professional judgement and not just stats.
  13. Then I'll be glad he wasn't up with the Twins and hitting a buck-eighty. If "discouragement" is the issue then it may be best for the team to find it out now rather than wait and find that he pouts for other causes too. I suspect in most cases you've "seen quite a few times", the braintrust has not seen what they wanted, or seen something they didn't like, and sent the player down to improve, and hitting .230 in AAA might even bear out their judgement.
  14. I'm not counting on him for a thing. Bullpen in Rochester is fine to begin with, figure it out from there. Anything he can contribute at the major league level is gravy, but if the Twins bullpen is already pretty good then he'll likely be thin gravy.
  15. Depends on whether you can find one team needing good CF work and wanting to take a chance on his bat, or two of them.
  16. OK, make that "someone who does not have a role in marketing this team".
  17. > Learning how they go about their business on a daily basis has been really helpful. Maybe now that you've gained the education, you'll consider it all a trade secret. But, one or two tidbits you've picked up would be interesting.
  18. The thought of his rotation is the cause of that. The size of the relief crew is just a corollary.
  19. Nevada being in the WAC hurt them in baseball, they joined the Mountain West this year and once they get past the early-season assortment the competition should be more representative.
  20. UNR is the closest university sports program to me, and I got down there for a double-header their first weekend home, but Shipley was not pitching that day. I don't usually get down there more than one game a year, but he sounds like worth a second trip, so I plan to try sometime. I doubt if I can give a better scouting report than "he looks good" or "had an off day apparently", but I'll report what I can. Nevada's home field being at 4500 feet of elevation or so means that the ball flies out of there pretty good, so one can get a false impression even if a pitcher is basically sound.
