  1. And if Tanaka does opt out after 4 years, the amortization of that posting fee makes the yearly cost even a bit higher. As with any "interesting" contracts, we don't actually know what the true cost will be until one or more decisions get made down the line. / edit - I see Brock and I were on the same wavelength.
  2. Moderator's note: rather than also delete this comment, I will say that the comment that was cut was a juvenile, one-hyphenated-word, play on the article author's name, basically asking "who?", and in no sense a questioning of the validity of the article or even a mention of its content. Please review the Comment Policy, in particular where it says (Emphasis modified.) And you now compound the mistake by questioning moderator policy in a baseball thread, also contrary to the above-linked TD policy. Follow the process outlined there, if you feel the need. Please keep the discussion here about baseball.
  3. Probably should have been a differently abled amount of money. We'll keep an eye on this.
  4. Moderator's note: please, if you (collectively) feel compelled to invite debate on a topic like this, open a new thread. I thought about asking this earlier when it came up, but hoped it would not start to take a life of its own here in this thread about arbitration and signings and specific players.
  5. That's the nature of trading for prospects. If you want a high ceiling guy who is also ready for the majors, you don't get him for Ben Revere.
  6. It's not like we have to completely guess about this. We can't know what goes on between his ears, but we do have results to go by. I know of this source for public consumption: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=may---001tre&type=pgl&year=2013 There may be other for-pay sites with more. This one indicates that May gives up a lower OPS-against with men on base than bases-empty. No evidence, there, to suggest his high ERA is from a lack of will to win.
  7. Slow, Slower, Slowey, and Bugs Bunny Changeup?
  8. Banjos, computer programming - geek or nerd, you make the call! I'd give a nickel to have Gardy in the room during this interview and watch the eye-rolling. Fun interview, good questions, sounds like a great kid (which is pretty typical of minor league players I think). Good jorb!
  9. I didn't realize so many players take part in winter ball, ahem, "offseason leagues". Makes it seem standard enough procedure, that discussion to not overwork top prospects seems out of the mainstream. Looks like Florimon really turned a corner, for those hoping for a breakout season at the plate in 2014. .407 OPS in the Dominican league.
  10. His 2012 salary of $7.5M minus taxes etc set him up for life. His 2013 salary of $11M allows him to go for high-end luxury items and activities during his career and thereafter. This contract allows him to start a charitable foundation, act as a venture capitalist to foster innovation, or whatever else he can think up.
  11. Getting better, or at least tackling a new challenge, at age 57 is what he would have to do as a manager, since he's pretty old for getting a first job in the big chair.
  12. You should go to a SABR convention. You get conversations just like this, because of the evident passion about the game. / sorry for the threadjack - I'll go sit in the corner now with Winston
  13. Grounds for summarily becoming ex-boyfriend?
  14. None. Closest ever was last year, at the WBC in Phoenix. Joe Mauer lined one into the third base stands and it landed one row below me and one seat to the right. A companion happened to be sitting there (we had spread out because of less than capacity attendance) and he ducked to the side rather than try for it. And even though it was coming almost right at me, I didn't even bother to move - this was no popup where it's uncertain where it will land and you might jockey for it, instead it was clear it wasn't going to be within easy reach. It was definitely scorched, and probably would have hurt me if I'd tried. An older woman below us wound up with the ball. Would have been great to have snared it, it being Mauer and all, but I didn't want to end up on the stadium cam fighting an old lady (and perhaps losing).
  15. "Welcome to Spring Training, rook. Oh, and there's my duffel bag; it's not going to carry itself."
  16. Cap Huston. The purchase of Babe Ruth, FTW.
  17. His BA was better than Koufax's though. I vote to keep him in.
  18. Because it's not a good comparison. Starting pitchers usually as a group have a higher ERA than the bullpen corps. But you can't construct a better than average staff by only having relievers; someone has to pitch more innings than that. You pitch differently if you know you're expected to go 6+ innings. Achieving an OPS+ in the 90s won't get a starter into many All Star games, but it does provide value to a team.
  19. Link, to any scouts or similar experts actually saying that at this stage of development?
  20. Aside from the posts that have followed, I'd also take issue with the word "modern". I well remember the feminist rally I attended when I was living in Washington DC in the 1970s - I figured, sure, I'm a feminist, go check it out. Heh. Lots of speeches along the lines of the linked blog. I did not feel especially welcome there. I suspect you could find similar sentiments going back to the days when Sappho's poems were read in their original handwriting, as well.
  21. Ryan keeps injecting Fryer's name when nobody else seems to want to. That's got to mean something.
  22. Oranges can be delicious but apples can't be navel.
  23. But you can make it up on volume. / old joke. Slimy car dealer: "we lose $1000 on every car we sell." "Then how do you stay in business?" "We make it up on volume"
  24. No man is faithful. What women call fidelity is... Whatev.
