  1. Since I don't see Danny Santana in your Final Roster, I assume he's an inadvertent omission from your list of AAA moves? Also, adding Vargas at DH to the Final Roster, and counting the bench, I see 15 position players going along with 13 pitchers. Am I misunderstanding, or do 3 of these need to be dealt with somehow? (I recognize Escobar is in limbo in your plans, but if Santana replaces him at SS then there is still the same numbers problem.)
  2. I was very disappointed by the outcome of the final episode: http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Star_Search_6765.png
  3. Ashburyjohn: What would you like to have seen from this dialogue?
  4. Except when the process is kept fair, and the front runner wins because whatever qualities that caused him to be the front runner end up being why he is picked. I agree the decision maker needs to be on guard to keep the process fair.
  5. His quote might be the most tepid, of those offered.
  6. Lind fits my stereotype of The Brewers Player: big, slow, a liability on defense. They think they're still in the AL and "if nothing else, we can DH him".
  7. It was actually a UFO abduction. I don't know how the shoulder thing keeps coming up; I fully expect to see it in his scouting reports for the rest of his career.
  8. Fair enough. Double dumbass on me. I wouldn't have known why the Death Star blew up, then.
  9. Hadn't kept up on this situation at all. So they have a year to make nice with the J-Hey Kid. All of a sudden this one seems like a non-starter, Buster or no Buster.
  10. I don't know the mechanics of working out a long term deal while his contract belongs to the Braves, but it seems to me that if the Twins were capable of working out a deal they would accept, the Braves would already have worked out the identical deal and signed it as soon as the laserprinter ink was dry. / which is pretty fast
  11. [geek]Any of you who've ever been exposed to combinatorial optimization will appreciate that at numbers like 50 and above it can get difficult.[/geek] / no, like Ebola, there's no cure if you've been exposed. Only rest and TLC.
  12. And in thirty years about how the Veterans Committee is looking into his qualifications as an overlooked candidate for the Hall of Fame. "Sure he played. You didn't ever see him? Wow."
  13. That was the question I was framing as I read through the post. The title of Manager is not simply an honorific for the best coach on the staff. What coaching qualifications are important in the managerial role, and what are not? Things like in-game strategy (surely a Molitor strength based on testimonials like the above), discipline and punishments, handling a pitching staff (strangely, good pitching coaches aren't shoo-ins as managers), maintaining a harmonious clubhouse, and so forth come to mind and I'm sure there's more, as abilities not necessarily exposed while coaching.
  14. I'm not. Just go with "A long time ago in an alternate version of a galaxy far, far away" and run with it.
  15. If there had been a bunch of lens flare in Episode 4, Luke would never have seen well enough to hit his target there at the end. I hope JJ keeps this in mind.
  16. "The Chicago Cubs will announce the hiring of former Tampa Bay Rays skipper Joe Maddon as the 54th manager in franchise history on Monday, the team announced in a release." I wish they had announced that this announcement was coming, first.
  17. That's the Fangraphs version. Baseball-reference.com still has us at +0.3.
  18. Classic threadjack.
  19. The video game has that list explicitly and at hand, and it can be a bit silly. But don't you think most teams have such a list implicitly, in the sense of "I'd rather give up this guy than that guy, if trying to swing a deal"? To an outsider like me it doesn't seem so crazy, thinking in terms of such a list, as a way of making sense of how trades happen. "If I pick up the phone first, I might end up having to offer a better player than if I wait for the phone to ring" still seems like a way to think of things, and a list reflects that. It's fine if that list has great numbers of players ranked equivalently, instead of with decimal point gradations.
  20. ... when facing him and that one other guy, apparently.
  21. Intended to say something like this, found that Chief has beaten me to the punch yet again.
  22. I didn't spot any mention of this elsewhere on TD, but MLB posted the finalists for the Gold Glove awards last week: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/99380188/gold-glove-awards-finalists-revealed As with last year, the awards are done 75% by a vote from managers / coaches, and 25% using some experimental but SABR-sactioned numbers. The SABR part of it, through games in early September, is published here: http://sabr.org/sdi/2014-09-07 No Twins made the list of finalists, but the SABR list shows several Twins who could be considered average or above, specifically the entire infield. Mauer could have been a finalist by the numbers, but apparently the managers weren't impressed. Suzuki was below average, and the outfield didn't have anyone put in enough innings at one position to register at all (except for Fuld who shows up well in his time split MIN/OAK). Aside from any Twins perspective, there are various nuggets. For instance the stats somehow favor NL shortstops over their AL brethren, to a greater degree than I see for any other position on the field. Just the luck of the draw as far as being in a golden age of NL SS?
  23. It seems Rosario is impressing everyone who sees him in person in Arizona this fall.
  24. If that's the case then you should probably never have a top prospect at AAA, because that level is liberally sprinkled with guys who don't want to be there and don't feel they belong there. Including the manager in some instances.
  25. They flew out to California to let down another team's coach gently?
