  1. Came here to say that. Well stated, spycake.
  2. Lovullo was in the running for the Rangers job, but apparently that will go to Pirates coach Jeff Banister. Both are about age 49. FWIW. http://www.masslive.com/redsox/index.ssf/2014/10/texas_rangers_pass_on_red_sox.html
  3. In any case, it's nothing new. Baseball players are expected to exude a certain cool. Remember the nickname the other players (Mickey Mantle, reputedly) hung on Pete Rose in the 1960s when he ran to first base on walks, even in spring training? Charlie Hustle. It wasn't a compliment; he turned it around and made it one, but there was always that undercurrent. Players will haze you if you try to get too happy-clappy on the diamond when it's not called for. And it's OK in my book that the postseason is different.
  4. ....nah, never mind, you're right, carry on.
  5. I'm no FO apologist, but I think there could be misunderstanding rather than failing to live up, and I wish DSP or others could define their terms. Does "gross revenue" mean what normal people think it means, e.g. the numbers we see in the Forbes reports on MLB, or are they using some standard accepted accounting practice, e.g. major things like repayment of the TF loans comes off the top and "gross" is smaller?Does "player payroll" include only the major league totals we see in the neighborhood of $85M lately, or does it include other things such as minor leaguers, meal money, and other expenses? We've heard "roughly half" defined more like 52%, but do they consider 40% to be "roughly"?Someone interviewing a FO member sometime might ask for a quick Accounting 101 course, to clarify these principles that I believe they take for granted are clear already.
  6. Better fastball than Johnson - that's good, right?
  7. That was a catch, all right.
  8. Good Viagra ad just now. I just wish she was selling Carl's Jr burgers instead.
  9. Difference for me is that The Tall Guy With Glasses never gave me reason to doubt his effort, only his ability to produce under pressure. (And in fairness Herr's numbers don't suggest he ever dogged it for the Twins either, it was just a matter of perception.)
  10. Ryan disproves the old adage that Flaherty will get you nowhere. Now 2-1 Royals.
  11. I'm here, but not all there. Which may be neither here nor there, anywhere. Tuned in too late and missed the excitement in the bottom of the first, though.
  12. http://media.hotair.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/facepalm-triple.jpg "NONE of you guys brought the pizza rolls?" cf. Parker's "Mom made pizza rolls" meme some time back...
  13. Maybe for the last time:
  14. Maybe they should legalize anabolic steroids for ballplayers. A little 'Roid Rage might enliven game 97. I wonder if Gardy had been indulging, accounting for getting kicked out of so many games for arguing? Did you think Hicks wasn't going all out on every deep fly ball in center field, or Escobar didn't dive aggressively enough to snare hot grounders toward the middle? Sounds like what you feel missing is the reaction from the player and his teammates after a success. But an overwrought reaction in the middle innings in game 97 would seem very strange to me, except for a very outstanding play. Walk-off wins do provide the team reaction you are looking for, right? But a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, though a clear crowd pleaser, shouldn't be hyped by the players themselves for more than what it's worth in a very long season.
  15. How do you propose that needs be addressed, when they arise? Only by trades?
  16. Announcement: due to the Twins' fourth consecutive 90-loss season and a concomitant decrease in social media activity, Twins Daily is instituting a reduction in its minor league coverage to only Cedar Rapids which is within a day's drive of home. Moreover, the discussion Forums will be condensed to two main areas, Major League, and Everything Else. John Bonnes will continue to write articles, when he has time after getting home from his new second job bagging groceries at Byerlys; the rest of the staff will be on temporary hiatus. TD remains committed to... oh, I can't finish this satire.
  17. What, and have nothing to show for trading away Drew Butera? What I'd like to hear from the FO is that in years they are below threshold on their major league payroll, the excess will be used in other ways to build the team, such as even greater investment in young players one way or another. I know that restrictions have been placed on signing young players, but surely there are ways the money can be invested to good purpose.
  18. I had tucked away in the recesses of my brain that, more generally, ten percent of all at bats have been taken by Hall of Famers. A quick search turned up this, in which somebody took the time to try and confirm this. http://darowski.com/hall-of-wwar/hofpct/ 9.6% to be exact. And 7.1% of all innings pitched. This despite the HOF accounts for only 1.3% of all players who ever played. Across so many eras, such numbers may be skewed relative to today's game. Still, the connection is clear; the best players are the ones who do it year after year, and their impact outweighs that of the mass of other players. It's interesting to see this borne out in the OP's list.
  19. I'm a little disappointed that anyone views the AZ job as more appealing. Maybe Hale's right to grab the job that is offered now, but that doesn't reduce my disappointment.
  20. Hicks just completed his age-24 season. Schafer today at age 28 and Fuld at 30+ aren't comparables for such discussions. OPS gains of .100 from one season to the next are not uncommon at Hicks's age. Going again without a legitimate Plan B on the 40-man roster would be foolish of course - this is true no matter how good your starter is. But I would lean toward Hicks as my starting CF in 2015 unless he flounders during spring training, and if he needs to be sent down to AAA I still wouldn't flush him from the organizational depth chart unless he failed again in 2016 (when he would then have no minor league options left).
  21. And getting thrown out going for two would still net you your single for the AB and PA.
  22. Also Bernier and not Dozier.
  23. I vote for this. Setting a major league record that is highly unlikely to ever be broken is always fun.
  24. Defense to pot.
