  1. Yep, that's my take too. They flew out to California and gave him a low-ball offer; he's found a way to keep the discussion going without his saying yes and without their saying thanks for your time. The end result could wind up in either direction. My guess is each side gives in a little and they get it done. But if it drags past the beginning of next week, the team has probably moved on.
  2. One was misspelt?
  3. It would bother me if my team based its lineup planning too much around how to man the DH position. I'd rather either the DH position be manned by some stud for whom the answer is to just write his name in every day, or else the DH position be just about the last consideration when all the other roster roles have been filled. When juggling the DH is a high priority, it means your roster is filled with slow bad defenders.
  4. I thought it was Rogers's forearm, not the shoulder, that got dinged up earlier this month.
  5. Looking forward to your next dissection of someone's pitching motion, in which you close by saying "if I'm getting paid to be the pitching coach, ignore what I just said. But as a fan..."
  6. I like the analysis, and pushing the other team to make the play is good baseball. They say not to make the first or third out at third nor the second out at home, so it passes the rule of thumb and this is the time. But Crawford is good, and from the Zapruder film it looks like a 5% chance to me. That's just throwing away a baserunner, and for all the marbles. Was pinch hitting for the injured catcher at this point still not an option? Going to extras with a backup catcher isn't ideal, but you do what you can to even get there.
  7. "You went full Maddon, man. Never go full Maddon."
  8. I've never done a journalistic interview, and when I saw my question come up to lead off I kind of gave myself a dopeslap, because it was clear it wouldn't accomplish what I hoped. I should have taken the time to craft the question in a way that a) he might still answer, and b ) would prove more informative. My draft was too wordy, so I can see why it was cut down. With hindsight, I'd have tried something like this: Fans hear lots of financial numbers. Forbes Magazine has published estimates putting the Twins revenue most recently around $220M. Club officials mention a 50-52%-of-revenue target for payroll. ESPN places the Twins 2012-4 major league payroll ranging $75-95M. The math doesn't work out, using these numbers. Can you clarify which (maybe all?) of these are misconceptions so that fans can understand better? Basically offering to outline his PR for him.
  9. I missed the first two innings, but in the top of the fifth Posey struck out looking, on a pitch that seemed well below the strike zone and probably inside as well. He had a few words with the ump. I assumed them to be along the lines of "you'll be calling that pitch for my guy too, yeah?" And sure enough, an even worse pitch got called for a relatively meaningless strike in the bottom of the inning. I figured it was a makeup call, which of course I hate. But afterward pitches all over the place, high and low, were called strikes the rest of the way too. I didn't remember it being that way in the third and fourth. I'm assuming now that the strike zone was huge during the early innings and I just didn't notice, but if not, there is a potential black mark on an otherwise memorable game. I was rooting for the Giants, but it's not fair if a team gets a lead and then the umpire decides, "OK, from here on it's a pitchers' duel." Now, I don't actually think it's as simple as one player influencing an ump so blatantly - silly for multiple reasons. But the Posey ring-up sticks in my mind. (I guess that's the power of incomplete information. )
  10. You have too much free time. But, I LOLed. Would LOL again.
  11. Build around, like you would for a Sano or a Buxton? No, probably not. But Dozier's defense at second base has been above average, and the batting ability he brings (you left out his power) does not grow on trees in that combination. Were we to trade him to fill some other hole, replacing him becomes a pressing task.
  12. Looking forward to your article next year in the SABR Baseball Research Journal, particularly the UDS quotient or similar metric as input.
  13. Nolasco and Pelf, then go... never mind
  14. Here is something for BYU, preparing for their game this week, that should get them banned from the NCAA if they should happen to view it: I'm in Boise, just touring fooling around, and got shooed away by an assistant/intern when I snapped a few photos through a gap in a gate. I just regret not wearing my U of Nevada sweatshirt. Imagine the super-secret information I am divulging in this post. Enjoy.
  15. I completely understand. Now fix it.
  16. Brock, you can test with charter.net if you are looking for other email providers. I've had to resort to using a junk Yahoo account for TD because I experience the same thing as the original poster - system tells me an email has been sent, nothing arrives.
  17. When already employed by the organization? I think usual patterns go out the window.
  18. On the Internet, nobody knows you're not Glen Perkins.
  19. Byron Buxton legs out an intentional walk. (Just kidding, he's on his way to third, demonstrating how to score from first base on a short double if I recall correctly. Guy's fast. Photo courtesy Ash Jr.)
  20. What they lack in manpower they make up in stanchions.
  21. Most donuts cost more than a dollar these days, not sure which way you're saying the smart money bets.
  22. That's the thing I like about the AFL. You call up and ask what time the game is, they ask what time can you be there.
