  1. I also missed that the tangent had taken on a life of its own and I contributed to it. Sorry. The tangent had a defensible connection to start, drawing a contrast to Mauer's propensity for walking versus Walker's perceived need to walk more. To the extent that connection needs to be pursued, so be it, but I agree (speaking now as a site moderator), let's stick to the thread subject of the players in this segment of the top 20.
  2. Or at least, why they (run/field/throw) are considered separate tools on the mythical five-tool scale and not just lumped together. Several of the assists shown here would also be made by someone with a better arm, and that better arm would make additional plays; but on these plays (with about 2 exceptions) even my arm would have sufficed and my vintage ball team had me at first base.
  3. And I'm saying that if the pitcher has decided he's not going to let you beat him in this situation, you're playing into his hands to get aggressive at the nibbling.
  4. Moderator's note: Both of you please tone down the personal attacks a notch, and then another notch again.
  5. Agreed. Anyone would. Unfortunately the opposing pitcher has some say in the matter.
  6. High-larious! Another example of why official defense stats may tell you what happened but are close to useless for evaluating players.
  7. I hope not. (With reference to today's news about the torn meniscus.)
  8. He's 19. Is there really concern that he's going to stop developing? Add a pitch when he's 20, add another when he's 21, fiddle around with a fourth pitch while he's 22-23, and you've got something. No, that's not how development works, on a clock like that, but the point is he's got time like any 19 year old prospect does. A year's a long time at this age. He has to make use of the time of course.
  9. If that's the upside, a prospect with a ceiling of maybe a utility player if he makes it at all, then I'm less enthused about investing any time in Big Pelf that comes at any expense in development of our younger players. Has to be completely garbage time when he's providing us "some value".
  10. ... but took the promotion to writing for a web site?
  11. RA: Y'know, if we run into a situation where we don't see somebody being a fit, there's always the possibility of moving some guys or juggling some things around. Translation: RICKEY NOLASCO, LIKE NEW, PLENTY OF TREAD LEFT. OVERSTOCK DUE TO SHIPPING ERROR, MUST SELL. TAKE OVER PAYMENTS PLUS C+ PROSPECT, OBO. CALL SOON, OFFER WONT LAST. (612) 659-3400, TALK TO ANYONE WHO ANSWERS, EVEN THE TICKET SELLERS ARE AUTHORIZED TO DEAL.
  12. Always trust a writer who has it straight that RBI already contains the plural.
  13. Checking quickly, of the five guys at the top of the AL for offensive WAR (just to pick a handy ranking) in 2014, all but Trout had more GDP than Mauer. Doesn't correlate to much of anything, IMO.
  14. If Joe Mauer had chosen football, TD forums would have been filled with discussion about why they didn't draft Mark Teixeira instead of that injury-prone bum Mark Prior.
  15. Yeah, I want to be optimistic but the recent winter ball outcome was sobering to me.
  16. Is intrigued by your ideas and would like to subscribe to your newsletter: http://cdn.ipetitions.com/user-images/petitions/give-pete-carroll-a-super-bowl-ring/UjQSWVOtRKWzFBUVdLBE_coach.png
  17. I'll go with Trevor May. Probably in the same range of stats you assigned to Gibson with a little more K/9.
  18. You should have randomly picked July 14. That would put him in CF for the All Star Game. Gotta aim high.
  19. That's a mischaracterization of the only quote I have seen from Ryan on the subject. http://aarongleeman.com/tag/terry-ryan/
  20. Possibly this one just acquired hers.
  21. He's got about as large a gap between ceiling and floor as anybody on the 40-man roster. Could still turn out to be an above average major league center fielder, could definitely be a total bust. I'm going to split the difference and guess that the change in regime is especially beneficial to him and he contributes enough to be a starter by August (and then Buxton threatens to come up and take his job away in September). BA in the mid-.200s, OBP .080 above that, modest power, OPS+ just shy of 100, WAR 2 or so if he's up for long enough to rack up the counting stats. I will refuse to profess shock if he falls flat though.
  22. Runs and RBI are created by a mixture of what the player does and what his teammates do. OB and hits are more nearly determined by the player himself. Since Joe is pretty good, you might expect these denominators to be large compared to his teammates, leading to lower ratios. To make a ratio that teases out the player's contributions to runs, I'd be interested in denominators that have more to do with the teammates' contributions, such as some kind of measurement of numbers of opportunities, like how many PA were with men on base. Said another way, you're normalizing against Joe's successes and calling them the opportunities.
  23. Moderator's note: please let's not continue the Yet Another Retrospective On Bill Smith's Reign tangent in this thread.
  24. So after the 1983 season and its 92 losses, on the heels of a 100+ loss season the year before, you'd have backed up the truck and cleared out the Twins roster of all those losers, and tried a new direction?
  25. What, and overstimulate him?
