  1. Concur. I was at a game in Cleveland last Friday. They lost, courtesy of my rally cap which I deployed on behalf of the Diamondbacks in the 8th inning (a hill I will die on). But the atmosphere in their ballpark was great despite the bullpen meltdown. Attendance was 36,639. The fans didn't need constant reminders from the scoreboard to "make some noise." It's not Fenway but there's a good baseball tradition there. The Twins' most recent Friday game was July 24th, versus the Athletics of West Sacramento - not much different of a draw to a team in the middle of the country than Arizona, IMO. Attendance that night was 26,128. Priority #1 is adding about 10,000 to that. If you're not drawing on weekends, heaven help you. Cleveland shows me that you can draw (and they still need to improve also) without a roster any better than what the Twins have now. But you can shoot yourselves in the (marketing) foot with moves like trading Jeffers.
  2. Austin Martin already fills the role at corner outfield, with similar stats vs lefties across the past two seasons
  3. I'm with you on that. I also don't mind if they selectively move someone - Larnach would have been out the door already except for an executive intervention at the Astros, so chances are another deal will be worked out for him. Of the three catchers, I would move Jackson, for pennies or whatever is offered in preference to a DFA. I don't forecast much post-season success even if they get there, so I would not invest many resources in marginal upgrades to the present roster. But I part company with some fellow prospect-hounds in that I do see value beyond just "trade value" in expiring assets like Jeffers. There is marketing value in making the post-season, or even just in being seen as trying for it but failing. I also think a failure in one post-season series still gives younger members of the roster experience that could pay off in a future post-season run. So, as usual, put me down as "on the fence" or "middle of the road" in my preferred approach to this deadline.
  4. The more I've seen of Roden the more last year's trade baffles me. So for me that's not a comp.
  5. Old? Unplayable against righties?
  6. He's a Twins fan and yet has survived this far.
  7. Was talking to a Cardinals fan yesterday. The folks there are upset about a couple bad years in a row.
  8. Wow, I take a walk around the A concourse at the airport, get a burger, and come back to see that I missed A LOT!
  9. Agreed about the season significance. The significance for me is whether Royce is edging toward the Not A Ballplayer category. / yes, that's a hawt taek that I hope cools down for me with time
  10. Once Lewis stepped on first, a throw to second would not be the best choice. Rodriguez no longer is forced and his game winning countermeasure is to stop dead in his tracks, daring a rundown involving the middle infielder who now has the ball, and allowing the runner from third to finish scampering home. For Lewis to be even considering that option was the fatal mistake.
  11. Ty Cobb? It's great to have you come back and take part in our discussion!
  12. Granted that if Lewis makes the correct play, any of a few options really, it only lets his team live to try again for another inning. But there is a special place in my cold, cold heart for players who are prone towards losing a game on the spot. Jake Cave lost a game in Kansas City with an ill considered dive for a sinking liner that he could have corralled, which would have let his pitcher survive to face another batter and maybe wriggle out of the jam with his lead still intact. Instead it went for an inside the park home run and the game was essentially over. Years later I'm still salty about it, as regular readers will understand. Josh Bell essentially ended the Twins chances the other day with a base running blunder. "He can beat you in so many ways" is an ultimate compliment to a ballplayer. "He can beat his own team so many ways," not so much. Twins players should not want to be mentioned by me in the same breath with Jake Cave or Josh Bell, except maybe if the bat alone is under discussion. I'm not anybody important, but they still shouldn't.
  13. I wish we still had Varland but this is possibly the dumbest sentence I will read this week. I don't know exactly which day he conceived writing it, but today Chi/Cle/Min all lost so the Twins remain 3 games behind the White Sox. If they first made up that ground, how many games ahead would count as "running away"? 5 at minimum? Despite the bullpen woes, the Twins are near the bottom of the majors this season in blown saves and comfortably in the top half of saves converted. There's more to analyzing a pitching staff than those particular numbers, but no individual reliever is worth 8 wins by himself; there would still be 7 other guys in the bullpen who can run into trouble in the middle innings or whenever.
  14. Didn't watch the game, saw the video of the last play. I'm ticked off and gonna repeat/revise what I put in the game thread. When the batter walks up to the plate, you ask yourself, "how many outs? how fast are the runners and the batter? what do I do if the ball is hit to me?" Royce didn't have a clue. He stepped on first. Then he stopped to think. You could practically see the wheels turning. Too late. Even then, a good throw to the plate would have saved their bacon, but it shouldn't have come to that.
  15. Learn what? Learn that when the batter walks up to the plate, you ask yourself, "how many outs? how fast are the runners and the batter? what do I do if the ball is hit to me?" Royce didn't have a clue. He stepped on first. Then he stopped to think. Too late.
  16. That's the mother of all strawmen. Of course we're not major leaguers. Not a prerequisite. Runner up was the article whose title insisted that none of us are GMs. Well duh. / edit - ha, I didn't read the thread all the way through, to see that Mike pointed out a different straw man argument.
  17. Gotta be patient with the young man. Royce Lewis is only 27 years old.
  18. I did my part tonight. In Cleveland for the SABR convention and we went as a group to the ballpark. I put on my rally cap to help the Diamondbacks in the top of the 8th, and it was good for a 4-1 road win and a Guardians loss. You're welcome. Fear the power of the rally cap.
  19. It's like when someone recommends a movie, refuses to give spoilers, except to say that the ending is good - which it itself some sort of spoiler but something has to be said.
  20. I'm a prospect-hoarder but this is acceptable use of two bats. Neither bat is attached to a glove that is special so the bar is set very high for the offense carrying them. If Amick has a few years as a semi-regular in the majors, I'm okay with that as the cost, likewise the younger Agbayani as a corner outfielder. I imagine the aggregate WAR for the careers of the two batters will exceed the WAR we get from the reliever; but you can't build a winner with players who contribute 1 WAR a year since roster sizes are the limiting factor. I'd make this trade.
